One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows 11 does not let you freely resize the Start menu or specify an exact number of rows and columns. To show more pinned apps, choose the layout that gives Pins more space, reduce Recommendations, expand the Pins section, and organize apps into folders.
Open the main controls at Start > Settings > Personalization > Start. Labels and available options can vary by Windows build, language, and feature rollout.
What you can change in the Windows 11 Start menu
The current Start menu includes Search, Pins, Recommendations, All, Account, and Mobile device companion. Pins displays apps, files, folders, and websites in a grid. All displays installed apps.
For a layout with more usable app space, you can:
- Choose the layout that gives Pins more space.
- Disable recommendation sources you do not use.
- Expand the complete Pins section with Show all.
- Use folders to fit related apps into fewer grid positions.
- Change All to Category, Grid, or List view.
Show more pinned apps
- Open Start and select Settings. You can also press Windows + I.
- Go to Personalization > Start.
- Under the layout options, choose the option that gives Pins more space. On current Windows 11 versions, this is shown as More pins.
This gives the Pins area additional room and reduces the space allocated to Recommendations. It does not create an unlimited grid: Microsoft does not provide a supported setting for entering a custom row or column count.

Expand the complete Pins section
Windows can initially show only part of your pinned apps. To display the full Pins area:
- Open Start.
- In the Pins section, select Show all.
Windows remembers the last expanded or collapsed state for Pins and All. The next time you open Start, it should preserve your choice. If Show all is not visible, there may not be enough pins to require expansion.
Reduce or remove Recommendations
Recommendations can contain recently added apps, frequently used apps, and recently opened files. Removing this content can make Start look less crowded. When all recommendation providers are disabled or all recommended items are removed, the relevant sections can collapse. This does not necessarily increase the number of pinned-app columns; it removes competing content from the layout.
Turn off individual recommendation sources
- Open Start > Settings > Personalization > Start.
- Turn off any options you do not want, including:
- Show recently added apps
- Show most used apps
- Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer
Depending on your Windows 11 version, additional recommendation-related controls may be available. Disable the sources you do not need, then reopen Start to check the result.
When “Show most used apps” is empty
If the most-used list has no entries or the option is unavailable, Windows may not have enough app-launch history, or app-launch tracking may be disabled. Check Start > Settings > Privacy & security > General, then enable Let Windows improve Start and search results by tracking app launches if you want Windows to build that list.
Turning off recommendation sources or removing all recommended items can make Recommendations disappear. This reduces visible content; it does not add arbitrary rows to Pins.

Pin, unpin, and rearrange apps
Pin an app to Start
- Open Start or select the taskbar search box.
- Search for the app.
- Right-click the result.
- Select Pin to Start.
Unpin an item
Open Start, right-click the pinned app, file, folder, or website, and select Unpin from Start. Unpinning removes the shortcut from Start but does not uninstall an app or delete a file.
Change the order
Drag a pinned item to another position in the grid. Put your most-used applications in the first positions so they remain visible without expanding the section.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Group apps into folders
Folders let you keep more applications available while using fewer positions in the Pins grid.
- Open Start.
- Drag one pinned app on top of another.
- Windows creates a pinned-app folder.
- Drag additional pinned apps into the folder.
To remove an app from a folder, open the folder and drag the pin out. When only one pin remains, Windows removes the folder automatically.
Useful folder groupings include Work, Browsers, Media, Communication, and Utilities. The folder itself occupies one grid position, making it a practical way to keep a large app collection accessible.
Pin a website to Start
Microsoft Edge can add a website as a Start shortcut:

Change the All apps view
Select All in Start to view installed applications. Current Windows 11 versions provide three views:
| View | Best for |
|---|---|
| Category | Browsing applications grouped by type. |
| Grid | Seeing more app icons at once. |
| List | Reading app names in a compact vertical list. |
Use the view controls in All to choose one. Windows remembers the last selected view.
Add or remove folder shortcuts beside the power button
Windows 11 can place shortcuts such as Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos, Network, and your personal folder beside the power button.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Start > Settings > Personalization > Start.
- Select Folders.
- Turn each folder switch on or off.
Available choices can differ by Windows build, account, and device configuration. These switches control shortcuts in the lower part of Start; they do not add apps to the Pins grid.
Move the Start button to the left
Taskbar alignment is separate from the Start-menu layout. To move the Start button and other taskbar icons from the center:

- Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
- You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
- Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar.
- Select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Set Taskbar alignment to Left.
This changes the position of the taskbar icons only. It does not change the number of pinned apps, the Recommendations area, or the layout inside Start.
Controls that do not apply to Windows 11
Several popular instructions refer to Windows 10 rather than Windows 11:
- Show app list in Start menu: This is a Windows 10 control. Windows 11 uses the separate All section with Category, Grid, and List views.
- Drag the edges of Start to resize it: The Windows 10 Start menu was resizable in ways the current Windows 11 Start menu is not.
- Use Start full screen: This is a Windows 10 instruction, not a current Windows 11 Start layout option.
- Live Tiles: Windows 11 uses pinned items in a grid; Live Tiles are not a current Windows 11 layout feature.
- Registry tweaks for unlimited rows or columns: Microsoft does not document a supported current Windows 11 setting for arbitrary Pins grid dimensions.
Microsoft’s Start documentation has separate Windows 10 and Windows 11 sections, so older search results can describe controls that are missing from your PC. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but its Start-menu instructions remain visible in older guides and documentation.
A practical compact Start-menu setup
For a Start menu that shows as many useful items as possible:
- Go to Personalization > Start and select More pins.
- Turn off recently added apps if you rarely need them.
- Turn off recently opened items if you do not want files in Recommendations.
- Turn off most-used apps if you prefer to manage your own pinned list.
- Pin your most-used apps and group the rest into folders.
- Select Show all in Pins when you want the complete grid to remain expanded.
- Use All > Grid for visual browsing or All > List for quickly scanning names.
- Add only the folder shortcuts you regularly use beside the power button.

Why did the Recommendations section disappear?
Recommendations can collapse when its providers are disabled or when there are no recommended items to display. This removes content from that area but does not create an unlimited pinned-app grid.
How do I show all pinned apps every time?
Open Start and select Show all in the Pins section. Windows remembers the last expanded or collapsed state.
Can I hide the All section in Windows 11?
The current Windows 11 Start controls provide All as the installed-app section and offer Category, Grid, and List views. They do not provide a supported switch to remove All entirely.
How do I put the Start button on the left?
Right-click the taskbar, choose Taskbar settings, expand Taskbar behaviors, and set Taskbar alignment to Left. This affects the taskbar, not the internal Start layout.

Use Start > Settings > Personalization > Start > More pins for more available pinned-app space. Turn off unnecessary recommendation sources, select Show all, and use pinned folders to fit more shortcuts into the grid. Windows 11 does not support the old Windows 10 full-screen or resizable Start menu, nor does it offer a Microsoft-documented control for custom row and column counts.
