Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →TeamViewer supports Windows 11, and most connection problems do not require router changes. First check that your TeamViewer version supports your Windows release, then restart the app and PC; if that does not help, identify whether the issue is network access, security settings, unattended access, or the remote display.
Avoid opening inbound router ports or disabling Windows Firewall entirely. TeamViewer normally connects using outbound traffic, and the steps below move from simple checks to more disruptive fixes.
1. Check your Windows 11 and TeamViewer versions
TeamViewer supports Windows 11, but older TeamViewer builds may not support newer Windows 11 releases. Check your Windows version at Start > Settings > System > About. Under Windows specifications, note the version shown next to Version.
| Windows 11 release | Minimum TeamViewer version |
|---|---|

| 24H2 | 15.64 |
| 23H2 | 15.47 |

To update TeamViewer Remote, open the app and sign in, select Help in the lower-left corner, and choose Check for new version. Select Update if one is offered. TeamViewer restarts automatically after installation. In TeamViewer Classic, select the three-line menu ≡ > Check for new version, then confirm with OK if prompted.
TeamViewer’s Windows download portal listed version 15.79.4 on June 22, 2026. The exact version available can change, so download the installer from TeamViewer’s official portal rather than a third-party site.
Windows 11 on ARM is supported through x86 and x64 emulation from TeamViewer 15.67. Windows-driver features such as VPN, Remote Printer, and SmartCard support are excluded on ARM devices.
2. Fully restart TeamViewer and Windows
If TeamViewer was working and suddenly shows a red status, refuses to connect, or displays Not ready. Please check your connection, restart it before changing firewall or network settings.
- Exit TeamViewer completely. In TeamViewer Classic, select ≡ > Exit TeamViewer.
- Open TeamViewer again from the Start menu.
- Restart Windows through Start > Power > Restart.
- Try the connection again after Windows has loaded.
For a black-screen problem, restart the remote computer and relaunch TeamViewer. Do not routinely restart the TeamViewer Windows service to fix a black screen: TeamViewer’s current guidance says service-related issues are not usually the cause.
3. Decide whether the local or remote PC is failing
Look at which computer displays the error:
- TeamViewer will not open, has no ID, or says “Not ready”: troubleshoot that computer’s installation and network.
- TeamViewer opens normally but one PC cannot be reached: troubleshoot the remote computer, its TeamViewer settings, or the connection between the two networks.
- Several computers fail at the same time: check TeamViewer’s service-status page before changing every local configuration. A provider outage, DNS problem, proxy, or company firewall may be responsible.
TeamViewer normally uses outbound connections from the computers. You generally do not need port forwarding or an inbound router rule.
4. Check internet access, VPN, and proxy settings
Open a normal website on the affected computer. If websites do not load, fix the Windows network connection first. If websites work but TeamViewer does not, an application firewall, VPN, proxy, or endpoint-security policy may be blocking TeamViewer.
Temporarily disconnect the VPN and retry, provided your organization’s policy permits this test. If TeamViewer works without the VPN, the VPN administrator needs to adjust its routing or split-tunneling policy.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Firewall & network protection.
- Select Allow an app through firewall.
- Select Change settings.
- Enable the TeamViewer entry for the network profile currently in use.
- If TeamViewer is not listed, select Allow another app, browse to the TeamViewer executable, and add it.
- Select OK, then restart TeamViewer.
On a work or school PC, Windows may prevent you from changing this list. The administrator must make the rule in that case.
6. Check corporate firewall requirements
TeamViewer attempts outbound communication in this order:
- TCP/UDP 5938 — the primary connection method.
- TCP 443 — fallback and update traffic.
- TCP 80 — a slower last resort that does not provide automatic reconnection after a lost connection.
Allow outbound access to:
master*.teamviewer.comrouter*.teamviewer.com
TeamViewer’s IP addresses are dynamic, so a permanent IP allowlist is unreliable. The relevant addresses resolve under *.teamviewer.com. Do not create inbound port forwarding merely to make TeamViewer work.
TeamViewer Remote may also need outbound TCP 443 access to:
configdl.teamviewer.comwebapi.teamviewer.comwww.recaptcha.netwww.gstatic.comcdn.cookielaw.org
These additional domains are not required by TeamViewer Classic. Organizations using TeamViewer SSO must also allow their SSO login server. Allowing TeamViewer through Windows Firewall alone may not be enough if a corporate firewall blocks outbound traffic; ask the network administrator to allow the domains and ports above.
7. Check antivirus and endpoint-security logs
Third-party antivirus, EDR, application-control, proxy, and firewall products can block TeamViewer even when Windows Firewall is configured correctly. They may also allow the initial handshake but block the screen stream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open the security product’s quarantine and blocked-application logs.
- Confirm that the installed executable is the approved TeamViewer binary and has the expected publisher.
- Ask your administrator to allow the required TeamViewer domains and outbound ports.
- Use a temporary policy exception only if your organization’s security procedure permits it.
Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion just to test TeamViewer. Exclusions reduce protection and should be narrowly scoped and approved.
8. Use the correct product for unattended access
A common reason TeamViewer appears to work until Windows restarts is using the wrong TeamViewer product.
| Product | Intended use |
|---|---|
| TeamViewer Host | Unattended access to a device without somebody accepting the connection. |
| QuickSupport | Attended support; normally a small executable that does not require installation or administrator rights. |
| Full TeamViewer client | Incoming and outgoing connections, with installation and service options. |
If the remote PC must be available at the Windows logon screen, install TeamViewer as a service or use TeamViewer Host. A normal QuickSupport session is not an unattended-access setup.
For TeamViewer Classic, verify that Start TeamViewer with Windows is enabled. To control the computer at the Windows logon screen or through UAC, enable the appropriate Windows logon rule under TeamViewer’s Security options and use Windows authentication when required.

9. Fix a missing ID, password, or session connection
In the current TeamViewer Remote interface, the TeamViewer ID and password appear on the main screen. If they are missing:
- Update TeamViewer.
- Close and reopen the application.
- Confirm that it has network access and has finished loading.
- Repair or reinstall it if the ID still does not appear.
For attended support, TeamViewer recommends creating a support session and sharing its session link instead of sending a permanent password. For unattended access, use TeamViewer Host and configure unattended access.
10. Fix a black screen after connecting
A connection that succeeds but displays a black screen is a different problem from a connection that never starts. Check these causes:
Minimized Windows Remote Desktop session
If somebody is connected to the remote PC through Windows Remote Desktop and has minimized the RDP window, Windows may stop rendering the desktop. Restore the RDP session window on the remote computer, then retry TeamViewer.
Headless computer or missing display output
Current TeamViewer versions support headless Windows devices using a built-in virtual monitor, but graphics drivers and display conditions can still affect rendering. If the computer has no physical display and the desktop is not exposed correctly, connect a monitor or a compatible dummy display and test again.
Security software blocking the screen stream
A firewall, VPN, or security product can permit the connection handshake while blocking screen capture or transmission. Check the product’s event logs and outbound rules rather than assuming the TeamViewer service has stopped.
Restart and update
Restart the remote PC, relaunch TeamViewer, and update both endpoints to supported builds.
Installing an old TeamViewer monitor driver is not a general Windows 11 black-screen fix. Current TeamViewer documentation associates that driver requirement with older Windows versions, including Windows 7 and earlier, for the black-screen privacy feature.
11. Check TeamViewer’s blocklist and allowlist
If one partner cannot connect but other connections work, inspect the remote computer’s access rules.
In TeamViewer Remote, open Settings > Security > Block and allowlist. Check whether:

- The connecting TeamViewer account or ID is on the blocklist.
- Allow access only for the following partners is enabled.
- The intended partner or company profile is present on the allowlist.
An allowlist blocks every account or ID that has not been explicitly added. A blocklist prevents only the specified partners from connecting.
12. Resolve licensing and account blocks
The message Sorry, connections are blocked does not necessarily indicate a Windows 11 problem. TeamViewer says it can result from an overdue invoice associated with the account or a device recently used with another account.

13. Reset Windows networking only when necessary
If Windows reports a network problem after ordinary troubleshooting, use Start > Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. Select Reset now, confirm with Yes, and restart Windows.
Network reset removes installed network adapters and reinstalls them. It can require VPN software and Hyper-V virtual switches to be reinstalled or configured again. Windows may also change known networks to the Public profile.
As a narrower alternative, reset the TCP/IP stack from an elevated Command Prompt:

Repair the app first if Windows provides the option:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find TeamViewer and open its menu.
- Select Advanced options > Repair.
- If the problem remains, return to the same page and select Reset.
Not every desktop installation exposes Repair and Reset. If those options are unavailable, use TeamViewer’s own uninstaller.
Use a clean reinstall when TeamViewer crashes, will not start, fails to update, or repeatedly restores a broken configuration:

FAQ
Is TeamViewer incompatible with Windows 11?
No. TeamViewer supports Windows 11. Problems usually result from an unsupported old TeamViewer version, blocked outbound traffic, a damaged installation, or incorrect security and unattended-access settings.
Do I need to open a port on my router for TeamViewer?
Normally, no. TeamViewer uses outbound connections, primarily TCP/UDP 5938, with TCP 443 and TCP 80 as fallback methods. Port forwarding is generally unnecessary.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why does TeamViewer show a black screen on Windows 11?
Check for a minimized Windows Remote Desktop session, a headless PC with no usable display output, and antivirus, VPN, or firewall software blocking screen capture. Restart the remote PC and update TeamViewer before attempting more invasive changes.
Why is TeamViewer unavailable after the remote PC restarts?
QuickSupport is intended for attended support and is not a normal unattended-access solution. Install TeamViewer Host or the full client as a service, enable startup with Windows, and configure the required Windows logon permissions.
Will reinstalling TeamViewer change the TeamViewer ID?
A normal repair or reinstall does not necessarily change the ID, but removing settings resets the local configuration. When switching from the 32-bit to the 64-bit client, TeamViewer states that the ID remains the same if the 32-bit version is uninstalled without removing settings.
Should I disable Windows Firewall to test TeamViewer?
No. Allow TeamViewer through the firewall and check outbound rules instead. Disabling the firewall removes protection and does not address corporate firewall, VPN, proxy, or endpoint-security blocks.
The Bottom Line
For most Windows 11 TeamViewer failures, the effective order is: update TeamViewer, restart both computers, identify which endpoint is failing, test without the VPN, allow the application and required outbound traffic, then check security and access-control logs. Use TeamViewer Host for unattended access, investigate display conditions for black screens, and reserve network reset or a clean reinstall for cases that survive the simpler checks.
