1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Permanently-Removed Invalid” is not a standard HTTP status or a universally defined technology status. It may be a vendor-specific label, an internal record state, or wording copied from a third-party explanation. Without the product name, the same phrase cannot be mapped reliably to a menu, API value, recovery process, or deletion guarantee.
Start by identifying where the message appears. An HTTP response, a OneDrive listing, a Salesforce data-stream error, and an application’s internal dashboard require different investigations.
What “Permanently-Removed Invalid” actually means
There is no general-purpose status definition for this exact phrase. RFC 9110 defines HTTP status-code semantics, but it does not define “Permanently-Removed Invalid” as a protocol status. The phrase also does not appear to be an identified, cross-platform status enum in the authoritative documentation reviewed for this guide.
Some generic articles use the wording for deleted or invalid records, assets, accounts, integrations, and cloud resources. Those explanations do not identify a product, version, API schema, menu path, or vendor-specific behavior. Treating them as a universal definition can lead to the wrong fix.

| What you see | What it may actually be | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| An HTTP response | A standard status such as 404 or 410 | That “Permanently-Removed Invalid” is the HTTP status |
| A stale file entry in OneDrive | A listing that still references a deleted item | That the file is still stored or recoverable |
| A Salesforce refresh error | A deleted field or missing access, often reported as INVALID_FIELD | That Salesforce uses the phrase as a universal status |
| An application dashboard label | A product-specific state or internal validation result | That another application uses the same meaning |
Do not confuse it with HTTP 410 Gone
HTTP 410 Gone is a real standardized response. It indicates that the target resource is no longer available and that the condition is likely permanent. HTTP 404 Not Found, by contrast, indicates that the server did not find a current representation of the target resource.
Neither response is named “Permanently-Removed Invalid.” For comparison, Crawlbase’s status-code documentation describes 404 as a target page that does not exist and 410 as a target page that has been permanently removed.
If you are debugging an HTTP response, inspect the actual response code rather than translating a dashboard label into 410. For a URL you have permission to test, run curl -I https://example.com/path and look for a response line such as HTTP/2 404 or HTTP/2 410. This does not diagnose a private application record or remove a stale entry from a cloud service.
First identify the product and the object
Before changing anything, record the context in which the phrase appears:
Recommended Free Tools
- Note the product, account, tenant, and relevant workspace.
- Copy the exact message, including capitalization, punctuation, and any adjacent error code.
- Record the object type: URL, file, user, field, integration, data stream, or another record.
- Copy the object’s URL or identifier if one is available. Avoid publishing access tokens, personal data, or private file links.
- Record the time, time zone, browser or client version, and the action that produced the message.
- Check the product’s official documentation for the exact phrase or code, not just a similar-looking phrase.
Do not follow a supposed universal path such as Settings → … → Permanently-Removed Invalid. No verified universal menu, button, recovery command, or API endpoint exists for this phrase alone.

Verified OneDrive case: ghost entries after permanent deletion
A current Microsoft Q&A report describes a closely related OneDrive problem: stale entries remain in Home or Recent after the underlying files have been permanently deleted. This is a specific OneDrive scenario, not a definition of the phrase across all products.
Reported symptoms include:
- The files are absent from My Files and the Recycle Bin.
- OneDrive search returns No results found.
- Opening an entry produces 404 File Not Found or Item does not exist.
- The entry remains visible through Microsoft 365 or Office.com.
- The menu has no Remove from list or Hide option.
- The selection checkbox or circle is missing.
In that situation, the visible item can be a stale reference or listing record rather than the actual file. Its presence does not prove that the file still exists, and it does not prove that the storage contents were cryptographically erased. The Microsoft Q&A report describes the behavior as a product limitation when the item is gone and the removal controls are unavailable.
Checks that are reasonable—but may not fix it
- Open OneDrive directly and check My Files.
- Check the Recycle Bin, including any second-stage recycle-bin area your organization exposes.
- Search for the item and note whether the result is empty.
- Open the stale entry and record the exact error.
- Check both OneDrive and Microsoft 365/Office.com to determine whether the listing is location-specific.
- Test a private or incognito window if you need to distinguish a local session issue.
The reported case says that clearing the browser cache, pressing Ctrl + F5, and using private browsing did not remove the entries. Creating more files only pushed the stale entries lower in the list. Therefore, repeating refreshes is not a reliable general fix for this symptom.
What to do when OneDrive provides no removal control
If the file is absent from My Files and the recycle bin, opening it fails, and the listing has no hide or remove control, there may be no user-facing cleanup action. Do not invent a PowerShell or URL trick based solely on the phrase.
Escalate the case through Microsoft 365 support. Include:

- The full OneDrive URL.
- Several example item names and their visible locations, such as Home or Recent.
- The exact error shown when opening an entry.
- The correlation ID, if displayed.
- The exact timestamp, including time zone.
- The tests already performed, including checking My Files, the recycle bin, another browser, and private browsing.
The Microsoft Q&A response suggests that support may need to investigate or clear stale OneDrive/SharePoint references server-side. That response is labeled AI-generated and may be incorrect, so treat escalation as the next diagnostic step—not as a guaranteed deletion procedure.
Separate Salesforce case: deleted fields and INVALID_FIELD
Salesforce has a documented failure mode involving deleted fields or removed access to fields in CRM data-stream refreshes. The relevant error is INVALID_FIELD, not a verified universal Salesforce status called “Permanently-Removed Invalid.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For this case, use the Salesforce-documented investigation path:
- Open the affected data stream.
- Go to Refresh History.
- Find the failed refresh and click the error icon in the Status column.
- Review the field and access information in the error details.
- If the field was deleted and disabling it on the data stream did not resolve the failure, search the logs for Deleted custom field or Permanently deleted custom field in the Action column.
These steps apply to that specific data-stream problem. They should not be presented as a remedy for an unrelated product that happens to display similar wording.
Common wrong fixes and why they fail
| Claim or action | Why it is unsafe or ineffective |
|---|---|
| “It always means the data is permanently and irrecoverably erased.” | The phrase has no universal definition. A OneDrive ghost entry can remain as a stale listing after the underlying file is gone. |
| “Change the response to HTTP 410.” | A product label is not an HTTP response. Confirm the actual HTTP status and the server or application generating it. |
| “Clear cache and refresh repeatedly.” | Those actions did not remove the documented OneDrive ghost entries, which behaved like stale server-side references. |
| “Recreate the object with the same name.” | A name match does not restore an object identity, permissions, field mapping, or reference ID. |
| “Run a generic cleanup command.” | No verified cross-platform command exists. A command copied from another product can delete valid data or fail silently. |
| “Use a single settings path.” | No universal UI path or button is documented for the phrase without identifying the product. |

Is “Permanently-Removed Invalid” an HTTP status code?
No. RFC 9110 does not define that phrase as an HTTP status. Check the actual response code, such as 404 or 410, when troubleshooting a URL.
Does the phrase mean the data is permanently unrecoverable?
Not universally. The phrase has no standardized cross-platform meaning. In a OneDrive ghost-entry case, a stale listing can remain after the underlying file is no longer available.
Is it the same as HTTP 410 Gone?
No. HTTP 410 Gone is a standardized response indicating that a target resource has been permanently removed. The phrase “Permanently-Removed Invalid” is not the name of that response.
Best Value
- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
How do I remove a ghost file from OneDrive?
First check My Files and the Recycle Bin, then record the opening error and whether the entry has a Remove from list or Hide control. In the documented case where those controls were absent, cache clearing, Ctrl + F5, and private browsing did not work. Microsoft 365 support was the recommended escalation route.
What is the Salesforce equivalent of this error?
A documented Salesforce data-stream problem uses INVALID_FIELD when a field was deleted or access was removed. Investigate it through Refresh History and the error icon in the Status column, then review logs for the documented deleted-field actions.
What information should I give support?
Provide the exact text and code, product and tenant, object URL or ID, timestamps, reproduction steps, screenshots without secrets, correlation or request IDs, and the checks you have already performed.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: do not treat “Permanently-Removed Invalid” as a universal status. Identify the product and the object first, verify the exact code in official documentation, and separate standard HTTP behavior from product-specific records. For OneDrive ghost entries with no removal controls, the evidence points to a stale listing and support escalation—not a browser-cache fix. For Salesforce data-stream failures, investigate the documented INVALID_FIELD path and refresh logs.
