If AppData is missing from C:\Users\<your-user-name>, it probably has not been deleted. Windows hides this folder by default because it contains data used by installed applications.

The normal location is C:\Users\<your-user-name>\AppData. Open it directly with %USERPROFILE%\AppData, or show hidden items in File Explorer. If that does not work, check whether Windows has loaded the profile you expect.

Open AppData directly

The quickest method does not require changing File Explorer settings.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter %USERPROFILE%\AppData.
  3. Press Enter.

Windows expands %USERPROFILE% to the profile currently in use. For example, it may open C:\Users\Alex\AppData. You can also enter the same path in File Explorer’s address bar.

Open a specific AppData subfolder

AppData normally contains three subfolders:

Command Folder opened Typical purpose
%APPDATA% AppData\Roaming Application data for the current user, which may follow a roaming profile
%LOCALAPPDATA% AppData\Local Local application settings, caches, and machine-specific data
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow AppData\LocalLow Data used by applications operating with lower security privileges

Do not expect %APPDATA% to open the AppData root. It points specifically to the Roaming folder. Microsoft documents the Roaming and Local paths in its environment variable guidance.

Show AppData in File Explorer

To make the folder visible in the current Windows 11 interface:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select View on the command bar.
  3. Select Show.
  4. Select Hidden items.

Now open C:\Users\<your-user-name>. AppData should appear as a hidden folder. Microsoft’s current instructions use View > Show > Hidden items in File Explorer.

Use Settings if the File Explorer option is unavailable

Windows 11 also provides this setting through Settings:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Advanced.
  4. Expand File Explorer.
  5. Turn on Show hidden and system files.

The wording and placement can vary slightly between Windows 11 releases. The File Explorer route, View > Show > Hidden items, is normally simpler. Microsoft also documents this Settings route in its guidance on finding lost files after upgrading Windows.

Do not show protected operating-system files

You do not need to disable Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) to find AppData. Showing ordinary hidden items is sufficient.

Protected operating-system files are different from normal hidden folders. Exposing them makes it easier to delete or modify files Windows needs. Microsoft specifically warns against changing this setting during user-profile recovery. Leave it enabled unless you have a specific, advanced troubleshooting instruction that requires otherwise.

Check which Windows profile is active

If %USERPROFILE%\AppData does not open, or the folder appears empty, Windows may not be using the profile you expect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check with Command Prompt

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type cmd and press Enter.
  3. Run these commands:

echo %USERPROFILE%
echo %APPDATA%
echo %LOCALAPPDATA%

A normal result might look like this:

C:\Users\Alex
C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Roaming
C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local

Check with PowerShell

In PowerShell, run:

$env:USERPROFILE
$env:APPDATA
$env:LOCALAPPDATA

The output identifies the profile and AppData locations used by the current session. If the path contains a different user name, a temporary-profile name, or another unexpected directory, you are not viewing the original profile.

The folder under C:\Users may not match your Microsoft account email address or current display name. Use the environment-variable output rather than guessing the folder name. PowerShell uses the $env: syntax for environment variables, as explained in Microsoft’s environment variable documentation.

Windows may have signed you in with a temporary profile

A temporary profile is one reason AppData can seem to disappear. Windows loads one when it cannot load the normal profile correctly. The temporary profile is removed when you sign out, and changes made during that session can be lost.

Look for a temporary-profile warning here:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Select Sync your settings.
  4. Check for a message saying that you are signed in with a temporary profile.

If Windows reports a temporary profile, save any important files created during the current session before signing out. Then restart the computer and sign in again. Microsoft recommends restarting as a first step; this may allow Windows to load the normal profile.

Do not create a new empty AppData folder inside the temporary profile and assume the problem is fixed. Your original data may still be under the normal profile directory, while the current session is using a different path.

If the user profile is damaged

If several restarts do not restore the normal profile, the profile may be corrupted. Microsoft’s supported recovery approach is to create a new account and move personal files to it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create a new Windows user account.
  2. Make the account an administrator.
  3. Sign in to the new account.
  4. Copy personal files from the old profile under C:\Users\<old-user-name>.
  5. Reconfigure or reinstall applications as required.

Do not blindly copy every item from the old AppData folder into the new one. Application data can contain profile-specific settings and caches that may be incompatible with the new account. Copy personal files first, then restore application settings only when you know which folders an application requires.

Some applications may need to be signed in to again, reconfigured, or reinstalled after moving to a new profile. See Microsoft’s instructions for recovering a corrupted user profile.

AppData exists, but an application’s data is elsewhere

Finding AppData does not always reveal an application’s files in an obvious folder. Microsoft Store and MSIX applications commonly store data below a package directory such as:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\<PackageFamilyName>\LocalState

Cached data may instead be under:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\<PackageFamilyName>\LocalCache

These locations are part of Windows’ packaged-app data model. They do not indicate that the main AppData folder is missing. Microsoft describes these locations in its MSIX troubleshooting guide.

Common mistakes to avoid

Mistake What is actually true
Assuming AppData was deleted because it is invisible It is hidden by default. Use View > Show > Hidden items or open it with %USERPROFILE%\AppData.
Using %APPDATA% to open the root That variable opens AppData\Roaming. Use %USERPROFILE%\AppData for the root.
Showing protected operating-system files That is unnecessary for normal AppData access and increases the risk of changing system files.
Manually recreating AppData A new folder does not restore data from a temporary or damaged profile.
Assuming the old Folder Options method is gone The legacy View > Options > Change folder and search options > View route still exists, although the newer hidden-items shortcut is faster.

Legacy Folder Options method

If the modern File Explorer menu is not available, use the older settings dialog:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select View > Options.
  3. Select Change folder and search options.
  4. Open the View tab.
  5. Select Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.

Then return to C:\Users\<your-user-name> and look for AppData.

FAQ

Why can’t I see AppData in Windows 11?

AppData is hidden by default. In File Explorer, select View > Show > Hidden items, or press Windows key + R and open %USERPROFILE%\AppData directly.

What is the exact location of AppData?

For the active Windows account, it is normally C:\Users\<your-user-name>\AppData. Its three standard subfolders are Local, LocalLow, and Roaming.

Does %APPDATA% open the AppData folder?

No. %APPDATA% opens AppData\Roaming. Use %USERPROFILE%\AppData to open the root, or %LOCALAPPDATA% for AppData\Local.

Should I enable protected operating-system files?

No. Hidden items are enough to access AppData. Leave Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) enabled unless you have a specific advanced troubleshooting reason.

What if Windows says I am using a temporary profile?

Save important files created during that session, restart the computer, and sign in again. Temporary-profile changes can be lost when you sign out, and creating a new AppData folder will not restore the original profile.

Why does AppData look empty?

You may be viewing the wrong profile. Run echo %USERPROFILE% in Command Prompt or $env:USERPROFILE in PowerShell and compare the result with the folder you opened under C:\Users.

The Bottom Line

In most cases, AppData is still present and only hidden. Open %USERPROFILE%\AppData directly or enable View > Show > Hidden items. If the path points to a temporary or unexpected profile, address the profile problem instead of manually creating a replacement AppData folder.
