Windows may have found that DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.
The reliable fix is to identify which part of the dependency chain is unavailable, then repair the application, runtime, driver, or loading configuration responsible. Avoid downloading a DLL from an unofficial website and copying it into C:\Windows\System32; that can install the wrong architecture or create a security problem.
What error 126 actually means
Windows uses error 126 for a generic module-loading failure:
ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND (0x7E)
The specified module could not be found.

The “module” can be:
- The DLL named by the application.
- A DLL required by that DLL.
- A dependency several levels deeper in the chain.
- A runtime component, graphics component, or other system module that cannot be loaded because it is missing, incompatible, or damaged.
For example, an application may call LoadLibrary("renderer.dll"). If renderer.dll exists but imports vendor_runtime.dll, and that runtime is absent, the application can still report error 126 against renderer.dll.
Microsoft documents the error code in its system error code reference. Broadcom also documents a case where the named module was present but a required Visual C++ runtime was missing.
Try these checks first
- Restart Windows. This clears a failed process and can undo a temporary driver or graphics-stack condition.
- Start the application locally rather than through Remote Desktop. If it works locally but fails in an RDP session, the selected graphics adapter or rendering path may be the cause.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the application, choose Advanced options if available, and try Repair or Reset. For traditional desktop software, run its installer again and choose a repair option.
- Check whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 32-bit process needs 32-bit dependencies, even on 64-bit Windows.
- Read the complete error text. Record the executable, DLL name, folder, and whether the failure happens only for a particular project, user account, GPU, or remote session.
Install the correct Visual C++ Redistributable
A missing Microsoft Visual C++ runtime is one documented cause of error 126. The runtime architecture must match the application, not merely the operating system.

The current v14 runtime supports applications built with Visual Studio 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2026. It is also binary-compatible with applications built using the Visual Studio 2015 MSVC Build Tools. Visual Studio 2015 support ended on October 15, 2025; newer v14 runtimes remain compatible with applications built using its MSVC Build Tools. Visual C++ 2013 and earlier use separately versioned runtimes and install side by side, so a newer v14 package does not replace a program’s required 2013, 2012, 2010, 2008, or 2005 runtime.
After installation, restart the application. If the installer offers Repair, use it first. Microsoft’s current runtime guidance is available on its Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.

Check the DLL architecture and dependency chain
A 32-bit executable cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit executable cannot load a 32-bit DLL. The same rule applies to dependencies below the DLL named in the error.

Use a dependency inspection tool to examine the executable and the reported DLL. Dependency Walker can scan 32-bit and 64-bit files and reports missing modules, invalid modules, import/export mismatches, circular dependencies, machine-type mismatches, and initialization failures.
Dependency Walker is an old utility whose documented support information goes only through Windows 8. Treat its output as a diagnostic lead rather than proof. In particular, old tools can flag modern Windows system components as missing even when those components are provided through API sets or other operating-system mechanisms.
- Install Dependency Walker from its official site.
- Open Dependency Walker.
- Choose File > Open.
- Select the failing executable, or the DLL named by the error.
- Check the module tree for missing files, red entries, machine-type mismatches, and unresolved imports.
- Validate each suspected item against the application vendor’s requirements or an official Microsoft package before replacing anything.
Do not copy a similarly named DLL from another computer. The filename alone does not establish that the binary is the right version, architecture, export set, or security level.
Repair Windows system files
If multiple applications fail to load modules, or diagnostics point to damaged Windows components, run the built-in repair tools from an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Open Start, type
TerminalorCommand Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. - Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow - When it completes, run Deployment Image Servicing and Management:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Restart Windows and test the application again.
SFC checks protected system files. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC may use as its repair source. These commands cannot repair a third-party application’s private dependency, but they can address damaged Windows files involved in module loading.
Update or correct the graphics driver
Error 126 is not always a missing application file. Graphics software can fail during DLL initialization because of an outdated driver, conflicting adapters, damaged system files, or a different GPU being selected for the process.

This is especially relevant when the error mentions OpenGL, DirectX, CUDA, an image-processing library, or a vendor graphics DLL. Esri documents error 126 cases involving outdated graphics drivers, conflicting graphics adapters, missing or corrupted system files, and Remote Desktop selecting a different adapter from the one used locally.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and check for driver updates.
- For graphics-intensive applications, install the driver supplied by the GPU manufacturer or computer manufacturer when appropriate.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the affected application if necessary, select Options, and test the recommended or high-performance GPU.
- Test the application outside an RDP session.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use Device Manager > Display adapters > [adapter] > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when the option is available.
Do not assume that adding a graphics DLL to the application folder is a driver fix. The application may require a matching driver stack rather than a standalone file.
Understand PATH and DLL search order
Adding a folder to PATH sometimes helps, but it is not a universal solution. For an unpackaged desktop application using the default safe DLL search mode, Windows checks locations in an order that includes DLL redirection, API sets, manifests, already loaded modules, Known DLLs, the package dependency graph on Windows 11 version 21H2 and later, the application folder, %SystemRoot%\System32, the 16-bit system folder, the Windows folder, the current folder, and finally directories in PATH.
The exact order can change when an application uses a manifest, package dependencies, SetDllDirectory, SetDefaultDllDirectories, or special LoadLibraryEx flags.
Also note that the App Paths registry key is not used to calculate the DLL search path. Registering an executable directory under App Paths therefore does not reliably solve error 126.
If you change PATH through System Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables, close and relaunch the affected application. Already-running processes keep the environment they inherited when they started.
For developers: load dependencies with a controlled search path
If you maintain the application, avoid relying on a broad, ambiguous DLL search path. For a DLL in the application directory and dependencies in standard or explicitly added directories, Microsoft documents this pattern:

LoadLibraryEx(lpFileName, NULL, LOAD_LIBRARY_SEARCH_DEFAULT_DIRS);
LOAD_LIBRARY_SEARCH_DEFAULT_DIRS uses the application directory, System32, and directories explicitly added with AddDllDirectory or SetDllDirectory. It does not use the normal broad search path.
When loading a DLL by absolute path and its dependencies are stored beside it, include the DLL’s directory:
LoadLibraryEx(L"C:\\Path\\to\\module.dll", NULL, LOAD_LIBRARY_SEARCH_DLL_LOAD_DIR | LOAD_LIBRARY_SEARCH_DEFAULT_DIRS);
LOAD_LIBRARY_SEARCH_DLL_LOAD_DIR requires a fully qualified path and temporarily searches the loaded DLL’s directory for its dependencies.
If you use SetDllDirectory, understand its side effects:

- Passing a directory adds it to the process DLL search path.
- Passing an empty string (
"") removes the current directory from the default search order. - Passing
NULLrestores the standard search order. - While a specified directory is active, safe DLL search mode is effectively disabled for the affected loading behavior.
- The setting affects later
LoadLibraryandLoadLibraryExcalls and can affect child processes. - Calling it again replaces the previous directory; it does not add a second directory.
For multiple private directories, use AddDllDirectory together with LoadLibraryEx and LOAD_LIBRARY_SEARCH_USER_DIRS. Applications should also consider calling SetDefaultDllDirectories(LOAD_LIBRARY_SEARCH_DEFAULT_DIRS) early in process startup, remembering that this does not restore the ordinary search path later.
The LOAD_LIBRARY_SEARCH_* flags are native beginning with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. Microsoft documents KB2533623 as a dependency for Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008. Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 do not support these flags.
What not to do
- Do not assume the named DLL is the missing file. Inspect its dependencies first.
- Do not download DLLs from random DLL websites. The file may be malicious, the wrong architecture, the wrong build, or missing required exports.
- Do not overwrite files in
C:\Windows\System32orSysWOW64manually. Use Windows Update, the application installer, the official runtime installer, or the hardware vendor’s driver package. - Do not expect
App Pathsto configure DLL loading. It is for locating executables, not defining the DLL search path. - Do not add several unrelated folders to
PATHas a blind workaround. It can cause Windows to load an unintended version of a common DLL and can affect other applications.
A practical diagnosis order

If the problem remains, provide the application vendor with the full error text, application version, Windows version, process architecture, dependency inspection results, recent driver or runtime changes, and whether the failure occurs locally, under RDP, or only for a particular user.
FAQ
Does error 126 mean the DLL named in the message is missing?
No. Error 126 is the generic Windows error ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND. The named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing, incompatible, or unable to initialize.

Will installing the x64 Visual C++ Redistributable fix a 32-bit application?
No. A 32-bit process requires the x86 runtime. Install the x86 package even when the computer runs 64-bit Windows.
Should I add the DLL folder to PATH?
It can help in some ordinary loading scenarios, but PATH is near the end of the standard search order and applications can restrict or change that order. Restart the application after changing PATH.
Why does the application work locally but fail through Remote Desktop?
RDP can select a different graphics adapter or rendering path. Update or correct the graphics drivers and test the application’s GPU assignment and behavior outside the remote session.
Can I fix error 126 by copying a DLL into System32?
Do not use that as a general fix. It can install the wrong architecture or version and can create security and compatibility problems. Repair the application or install the required component from Microsoft or the software vendor.

It is useful for inspecting dependency chains, but it is an old diagnostic utility. Its reported missing system modules need validation and should not automatically be treated as files that must be downloaded.
The Bottom Line
Start with the architecture, the Visual C++ runtime, the application’s dependency chain, and the graphics environment. Then repair Windows files or correct the application’s DLL search configuration if the evidence points there. Error 126 is a loading failure, not proof that the DLL named in the message should be downloaded or copied into a Windows system folder.
