GTA: San Andreas can run on Windows 11, but the right setup depends on which PC edition you own. The Definitive Edition is a modern remaster installed through Steam or the Rockstar Games Launcher; the classic PC version is the 2004-era game and may need fixes for display, mouse input, audio, or frame-rate behavior.

Do not install classic-version fixes such as SilentPatch or an ASI widescreen mod into the Definitive Edition. Identify your edition first.

1. Identify your version of GTA: San Andreas

Edition How to recognize it Use these instructions
Definitive Edition Modern remaster sold through Steam or Rockstar Games Launcher; uses updated graphics and GTA V-style controls Install, launch, and verify it through Steam or Rockstar
Classic/original PC version 2004-era release from an older Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher, disc, or retail installation Use the classic-version guidance below, including SilentPatch and a compatible widescreen fix if needed

The Definitive Edition’s Steam release became available on January 19, 2023. Its listed minimum requirements include Windows 10, an Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD FX-6300, 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 760 2 GB or Radeon R9 280 3 GB, and 19 GB of storage. Windows 11 is newer than the listed Windows 10 requirement, although Rockstar’s published requirements specifically name Windows 10 64-bit rather than Windows 11.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas V2.0 - PC
  • Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
  • Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals
  • Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
  • Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
  • New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them

2. Install the Definitive Edition

Install through Steam

  1. Install and open Steam.
  2. Select Store.
  3. Search for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition.
  4. Purchase the game.
  5. Open Library and select the game.
  6. Select Install, choose the installation location, and wait for the download to finish.
  7. Launch the game from Steam.

Install through Rockstar Games Launcher

  1. Download and install the Rockstar Games Launcher.
  2. Sign in with the Rockstar Games account that owns the game.
  3. Open your game library.
  4. Select Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition or the trilogy if you own Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
  5. Select Install, choose a folder, and select Install again.
  6. Launch the game through the Rockstar Games Launcher.

The Rockstar version requires an account login, an internet connection for activation, and periodic entitlement verification. The launcher also installs supporting components such as DirectX, Chromium, and the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package.

3. Verify the Definitive Edition’s files

Steam

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click the game, or select the gear icon on its library page.
  3. Select Properties….
  4. Open Installed Files.
  5. Select Verify integrity of game files.

Steam may say that one or more files failed verification. This is not always an error: Steam notes that local configuration files are often left unchanged during verification.

Rockstar Games Launcher

  1. Open the Rockstar Games Launcher and sign in.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Under My installed games, select San Andreas.
  4. On the right, find Verify game file integrity.
  5. Select Verify Integrity and wait for the process to complete.

Rockstar displays a notification above the Windows system tray when verification finishes.

4. Set up the classic PC version

The classic game may launch without changes, but its old engine commonly has problems with modern resolutions, mouse capture, sound, startup, and frame-rate timing. A practical setup is:

  1. Install the game from your legitimate disc, existing Steam library, or existing Rockstar installation.
  2. Run the game once, then close it.
  3. Back up the game folder and your save files.
  4. Install the current SilentPatchSA release.
  5. Install a compatible widescreen fix if you use a widescreen or ultrawide monitor.
  6. Start the game and configure its resolution and graphics settings.

Install SilentPatchSA

  1. Open the SilentPatch releases page on GitHub.
  2. Download the SilentPatchSA archive, not a patch for a different GTA game.
  3. Open the game’s installation directory, the folder containing gta_sa.exe.
  4. Extract the archive contents into that main folder, alongside gta_sa.exe.
  5. Launch the game.

The 2024 SilentPatch release introduced Build 33, and the Build 33.1 hotfix addressed, among other issues, a crash involving the resolution picker and certain game versions or rendering modifications. SilentPatch is unofficial. Keep a backup so you can remove it if your particular installation behaves worse.

Support is version-dependent. The newest Steam and Rockstar Games Launcher versions of the classic game may not support every older fix in the same way as the classic executable targeted by community guides.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  • Features exclusive to the PC version include the ability to edit the lead character's appearance and switch to a radio station that plays MP3 files stored on the computer. Perhaps the biggest change is the improved visuals, now optimized specifically for high-performance systems. Players will be able to view the game with new 32-bit textures, longer viewable distances, and support for multiple display resolutions. Furthermore, players can watch replays of the last 30 seconds of action and then e-mail them to friends.
  • Offers support for 32-bit textures and multiple display resolutions for sharper visuals than the PS2 game Import your favorite tunes for play on a custom radio station, or listen to over nine hours of '80s music
  • Record the last 30 seconds of stunts, shootouts, or fiery crashes and show them to friends via e-mail
  • Customize the look of Tommy Vercetti and his threads with the player skin editor
  • Supports EAX 3.0 audio for enveloping sound effects and music

Fix widescreen or ultrawide display problems

The original PC game was designed around older 4:3 displays. On a modern monitor, it may stretch the picture, show an incorrect field of view, or place the HUD and subtitles incorrectly.

A compatible ThirteenAG Widescreen Fix can correct the aspect ratio, field of view, HUD positioning, subtitle scaling, and some multi-monitor alignment issues. It normally requires a compatible classic executable and an ASI loader.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the fix’s supported game version before installing it. Do not put a classic widescreen fix into the Definitive Edition; the remaster uses a different executable and has its own display settings.

5. Use Windows 11 compatibility settings only when needed

Windows XP compatibility mode is not a mandatory GTA: San Andreas setting. It can help an old installation, but it can also conflict with launchers, overlays, SilentPatch, and graphics modifications. Test the unmodified game first.

To enable compatibility mode manually:

  1. Open the folder containing gta_sa.exe.
  2. Right-click gta_sa.exe and select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Enable Run this program in compatibility mode for: only if required.
  5. Choose an older Windows version.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.

You can also try Windows 11’s built-in tool:

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
  4. Select Run and follow the prompts.

Microsoft recommends checking for a publisher update first and using the troubleshooter when no update is available.

6. Fix common problems in the classic version

“Cannot find 800x600x32 video mode”

This error usually means the old resolution picker cannot initialize a valid display mode. Try this order:

  • Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals
  • Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles

  1. Close the game.
  2. Install SilentPatchSA.
  3. Delete the configuration file at %USERPROFILE%\Documents\GTA San Andreas User Files\gta_sa.set.
  4. Start the game again.
  5. Set the resolution and graphics options again.

Deleting gta_sa.set resets saved graphics settings. It does not delete the save-game files in the same folder.

The mouse does not work

Mouse input is a known weakness of the classic Windows port. First test the clean game. If the mouse still fails, install SilentPatch before adding other modifications. Avoid installing several input fixes at once because it becomes difficult to identify which one changed the behavior.

The game crashes or freezes during startup

Use a clean troubleshooting sequence:

  1. Temporarily move third-party .asi, .dll, and mod files out of the game folder.
  2. Delete gta_sa.set.
  3. Verify the game files or reinstall the game.
  4. Install SilentPatchSA.
  5. Add other modifications back one at a time.

Incompatible executables, damaged configuration files, resolution-picker bugs, conflicting ASI or DLL modifications, and altered game files can all produce similar crashes.

There is no sound or the audio is distorted

Older audio code and EAX-related components can behave incorrectly on modern systems. Test a verified game installation without replacement DLLs or audio mods first. Do not download DLLs from random “DLL fix” websites: a file intended for another game build can cause more crashes, and untrusted downloads may contain malware.

Compatibility mode and specific legacy audio fixes can help in some versions, but there is no single audio setting that works for every classic installation.

The game runs too fast or physics behave strangely

Parts of the classic engine are affected by frame rate. An uncapped frame rate can produce timing or physics problems, especially on high-refresh-rate displays. Use the game’s own frame-rate controls or a reputable compatibility patch rather than assuming the game should run completely uncapped.

7. Windows 11 24H2: the Skimmer bug

Windows 11 version 24H2 exposed a specific San Andreas engine bug involving the Skimmer seaplane. Depending on the game and patch combination, the plane may fail to spawn at its usual locations, launch the player outside the map when created by a trainer, or freeze the game when entered or spawned with SilentPatch installed.

This is linked to a floating-point calculation in the game’s plane-rendering code. It is not proof that SilentPatch caused the underlying bug; an unmodified game can also show the issue. Tests reported for Windows 11 23H2 and Windows 10 22H2 did not reproduce the same behavior.

The issue is a specific vehicle edge case, not a general reason that GTA: San Andreas cannot run on Windows 11. See Silent’s Blog’s technical report for the details.

8. Avoid these outdated fixes

  • “Windows 11 cannot run San Andreas.” False. Both the modern PC release and the classic game can run, although the classic version may need maintenance.
  • “XP compatibility mode is required.” False. Use it only when normal launch and targeted fixes do not solve the problem.
  • “The same mods work with both editions.” False. SilentPatch, ASI loaders, executable downgrades, and classic widescreen fixes target the original engine.
  • “A random DLL will fix it.” Unsafe and unverified. DLLs are often tied to a particular build or mod loader.
  • “A 4 GB patch is mandatory.” Not established as a general Windows 11 requirement. Start with a clean installation, a reset configuration, SilentPatch, compatible widescreen support, and controlled frame timing.

Recommended setup

If you own… Recommended approach
Definitive Edition Install through Steam or Rockstar Games Launcher, keep Windows and graphics drivers current, verify files when necessary, and avoid classic-version mods.
Classic PC version Run it once, back up the folder and saves, install SilentPatchSA, add a compatible widescreen fix if required, and reset gta_sa.set when display settings fail.

For the classic game, add modifications individually and test after each installation. That approach is slower than copying a large “fix pack” into the folder, but it makes crashes and incompatibilities much easier to diagnose.

FAQ

Can GTA: San Andreas run on Windows 11?

Yes. The Definitive Edition has a current Windows PC release, and the classic PC version can also run on Windows 11 with possible fixes for its old display, input, audio, and timing systems.

Do I need Windows XP compatibility mode?

No. Try launching the game normally first. Compatibility mode is an optional troubleshooting step and can conflict with patches, launchers, overlays, or graphics fixes.

Can I install SilentPatch on the Definitive Edition?

No. SilentPatchSA is intended for the classic PC game. Do not install it, a classic ASI loader, or a classic widescreen fix into the Definitive Edition.

Will deleting gta_sa.set delete my save games?

No. Deleting %USERPROFILE%\Documents\GTA San Andreas User Files\gta_sa.set resets graphics configuration. It does not delete the save-game files in that folder.

Why does San Andreas say it cannot find 800x600x32 video mode?

The classic game’s old resolution picker is failing to initialize a valid display mode. Install SilentPatchSA, delete gta_sa.set, then start the game and configure the display again.

Does the Windows 11 24H2 Skimmer bug mean the whole game is broken?

No. It is a specific engine bug involving the Skimmer seaplane. It can affect spawning or entering that vehicle, but it is not a general failure of San Andreas on Windows 11. Tests on Windows 11 23H2 and Windows 10 22H2 did not reproduce it.

The Bottom Line

Install the Definitive Edition through Steam or Rockstar Games Launcher if you want the supported modern release. If you are using the classic PC game, begin with a clean installation, run it once, back it up, and then use the current SilentPatchSA release plus a compatible widescreen fix when necessary. Reset gta_sa.set for display errors, control frame rate on high-refresh monitors, and add mods one at a time.
