Microsoft Edge Split screen displays two websites side by side in one browser tab. On supported desktop versions, open Settings and more (…) → Split screen to start it; you can also add a toolbar button or customize its keyboard shortcut in Settings.
Edge supports Split screen on Windows and macOS from version 117, but not on Android or iOS. The shortcut setting may still be labeled Shortcut for split window, depending on your Edge build.
Check whether Split screen is available
Microsoft lists Split screen as supported on Windows and macOS in Edge version 117 or later. To check your version, open … → Help and feedback → About Microsoft Edge. Edge checks for updates on this page and displays the installed version.
Split screen is not supported in Edge for Android or iOS. The control can also be absent if your organization has disabled the feature through the SplitScreenEnabled policy.

Start Split screen in Microsoft Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge on your Windows PC or Mac.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner. You can also press Alt+F.
- Select Split screen.
- Use the second pane to open another website. The two websites appear in one Edge tab.
Edge supports two websites per Split screen tab, not a three- or four-pane layout.
Add a Split screen button to the toolbar
If you use Split screen regularly, add its control to the Edge toolbar for quicker access.
- Select … → Settings.
- Open Appearance.
- Enable the Split screen button.
The control should now appear in the toolbar. Depending on your Edge version, the setting or button may use the older Split window wording.

Change the Split screen keyboard shortcut
Microsoft’s current feature documentation does not publish a universal default keyboard shortcut. Check the setting in your Edge build and assign a shortcut there instead of relying on an unverified default.

- Select Accessibility, then open Shortcut.
- Find Shortcut for split window, or the equivalent Split screen label in your build.
- Click the shortcut field and press the key combination you want to use. It must include Ctrl or Alt.
- Close Settings. The change is saved automatically; restart Edge to ensure the new shortcut takes effect.
For example, you could choose Ctrl+Alt+S if it is not already used by another application or browser function. The exact label and shortcut behavior may vary between builds.
Close or exit Split screen
Use the appropriate action depending on whether you want to close a page or keep both pages open as separate tabs.

How links behave in the two panes
Older Split screen builds offered a Tabs in split screen setting with a Link tabs option. Microsoft Q&A reports that this option did not work reliably for some users. If links do not open in the expected pane, use the pane’s context menu to choose where a link should open.
Why Split screen is missing
If Split screen does not appear in the … menu, toolbar settings, or shortcut settings, check these possibilities:

- You are using mobile Edge: Split screen is not supported on Android or iOS.
- Your organization disabled it: An administrator can control the feature with the SplitScreenEnabled policy.
- Your build does not expose the control: Availability can vary by browser version, device type, and market.
Updating Edge is a reasonable first step. Do not treat the old edge://flags/#edge-split-screen procedure as the normal current method. Microsoft’s current documentation describes Split screen as a supported feature launched from the menu, with availability also controllable by an administrative policy.

Administrator controls
On managed Windows devices, administrators can control the feature with the Microsoft Edge policy SplitScreenEnabled. The Group Policy setting is named Enable split screen feature in Microsoft Edge and is located under Administrative Templates/Microsoft Edge.
For registry-based management, the policy is stored at SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge. Its value name is SplitScreenEnabled, with type REG_DWORD. A value of 0x00000001 enables the feature. Policy changes require an Edge restart because this policy has no dynamic refresh.
This is a browser policy, not a per-profile preference. It applies even when the current Edge profile is signed in with a Microsoft account.
