Built-in Windows images are under C:WindowsWeb, while a picture you chose yourself normally remains in its original folder. Windows also creates cached copies for some desktop backgrounds, and Windows Spotlight uses a separate cache with files that have cryptic names and no extensions.
The quickest way to check a location is to copy its path into the File Explorer address bar and press Enter.
Windows 11 wallpaper locations at a glance
| Image type | Location | What you will find there |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in desktop wallpapers | C:WindowsWebWallpaper |
Windows-supplied desktop wallpaper folders and images. |
| Built-in lock-screen images | C:WindowsWebScreen |
Stock lock-screen images included with many Windows installations. |
| 4K wallpaper variants | C:WindowsWeb4K |
Resolution-specific versions of some Windows wallpapers. |
| Current desktop wallpaper cache | %AppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemesTranscodedWallpaper |
A rendered copy of the current desktop background. It normally has no file extension. |
| Cached desktop background files | %AppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemesCachedFiles |
Additional cached copies, when Windows has created them. |
| User theme files | %LocalAppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemes |
Per-user theme files and related personalization data. |
| Windows Spotlight images | %LocalAppData%PackagesMicrosoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewyLocalStateAssets |
Downloaded Spotlight images with random-looking names and no dependable extension. |
Microsoft’s theme documentation identifies the Windows Web folder as the standard wallpaper root. The cache and Spotlight locations are different: they contain copies or downloaded content, not necessarily the original file selected by the user.

Built-in lock-screen folder
For stock lock-screen images, open:
C:WindowsWebScreen
This folder is a built-in image location, not a guaranteed record of the lock-screen picture currently displayed. If the lock screen is set to a custom picture or Windows Spotlight, the active image may be elsewhere.
Find the wallpaper currently used on the desktop
There is no single folder that always contains the original file currently used as the desktop background. Windows may be displaying:
- A built-in image from
C:WindowsWebWallpaper. - A custom image that remains in the folder where you originally saved it.
- A rendered cache copy under your user profile.
- A Windows Spotlight image, if Spotlight is selected for the desktop on your Windows 11 build.
To inspect the main desktop wallpaper cache, open:
%AppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemes
Look for TranscodedWallpaper and the CachedFiles folder. TranscodedWallpaper is an extensionless rendered copy, so File Explorer may not identify it as a normal JPEG or PNG. The CachedFiles folder may be missing or empty, depending on how the background was applied.

These are cache locations. They do not prove where the original image is stored. If you selected a photo from C:UsersYourNamePictures, for example, the original may still be in that Pictures folder.

The equivalent full path starts with your user profile:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalPackagesMicrosoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewyLocalStateAssets
Spotlight files generally have cryptic filenames and no .jpg or .png extension. The folder can contain several downloaded images, including images that are no longer displayed. Consequently, the newest or largest file is not a reliable way to identify the current Spotlight picture.
Copy Spotlight images before opening them
Do not rename or delete the originals while Spotlight is using the cache. Instead:
- Create a temporary folder, such as
C:UsersYourNamePicturesSpotlight. - Copy the files from the
Assetsfolder into that temporary folder. - Work only with the copies.
- After identifying an image, add
.jpgto the copy’s filename and try opening it.
Some cached items may not be usable photographs, so adding an extension does not guarantee that every file will open as an image. Spotlight can also refresh its cache and remove older files, so copy anything you want to keep before Windows updates the collection.
Check which image Windows is configured to use
To see the setting rather than search through folders, open:
- Go to Start > Settings > Personalization > Background.
- Check the background mode and the recent image choices.
Windows 11 can use a Picture, Solid color, Slideshow, or, where available, Windows Spotlight for the desktop.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

For the lock screen, go to Start > Settings > Personalization > Lock screen. Under Personalize your lock screen, the available choices are:
- Windows spotlight
- Picture
- Slideshow
If Picture is selected, use Browse photos to locate the custom image. If Slideshow is selected, Windows uses the image folder configured there rather than a single special lock-screen file.
Make the lock screen and sign-in screen use the same image
The lock screen and sign-in screen have a separate setting. To reuse the lock-screen image when signing in:
- Open Start > Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
- Enable Show the lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen.
Without this setting, the image shown before sign-in and the image shown after the lock-screen surface appears do not necessarily match.
The same page also includes Lock screen status. The documented example is Weather and more, and None is available if you do not want status information shown.
Repair a wallpaper that keeps changing back
If Windows repeatedly reverts to an earlier desktop background, the wallpaper cache may be involved. A Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting answer recommends removing the cache items and restarting the PC.

- Open
%AppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemesin File Explorer. - Close Settings and any personalization windows.
- Delete the
TranscodedWallpaperfile if it is present. - Delete the
CachedFilesfolder if it is present. - Restart Windows. Do not merely close the lid or use a quick shutdown.
- Set the wallpaper again from Settings > Personalization > Background.
This is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that the cache is the cause. Wallpaper reversion can also result from a slideshow, Windows Spotlight, synchronization, organization policy, or another personalization setting. Copy any files you want to preserve before deleting cache content.
Use policy to set a corporate wallpaper or lock-screen image
On managed Windows 11 PCs, a policy can override the image selected in Settings.

Desktop wallpaper Group Policy
On editions that support this policy, open the Local Group Policy Editor and go to:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Desktop > Desktop > Desktop Wallpaper
The policy accepts a fully qualified local path or a UNC path, for example:
C:WindowsWebWallpaperhome.jpg
\ServerShareCorp.jpg
Microsoft lists desktop-wallpaper policy support for Windows 11 version 21H2 and later on Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. A work or school administrator may therefore make the Settings choice appear ineffective.

This policy also accepts a fully qualified local or UNC path. Microsoft lists Group Policy support for this lock-screen policy on Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions; support differs from the desktop policy and from Intune configuration support.
Intune configuration paths
For managed devices, Microsoft documents these Personalization CSP settings:
| Purpose | OMA-URI |
|---|---|
| Desktop image | ./Vendor/MSFT/Personalization/DesktopImageUrl |
| Lock-screen image | ./Vendor/MSFT/Personalization/LockScreenImageUrl |
These settings use an HTTP or HTTPS URL to a .jpg, .jpeg, or .png image. If a managed computer ignores a locally selected wallpaper, check with the administrator before changing policy-related settings.
What the common locations do—and do not—tell you
| Assumption | What is actually true |
|---|---|
Every wallpaper is in C:WindowsWebWallpaper. |
That folder contains built-in images. Custom images usually remain in their original folders, with possible cached copies elsewhere. |
| The Spotlight Assets folder always contains the active lock-screen image. | It contains a changing collection of downloaded Spotlight files, not a dependable one-file record of the active image. |
| Spotlight cache files are ordinary JPEGs. | They usually lack extensions and may not open directly in File Explorer. |
Deleting TranscodedWallpaper always fixes wallpaper problems. |
It is a possible cache-repair step for some reversion problems, not a universal fix. |
| The lock screen and sign-in screen always use different images. | The sign-in screen can reuse the lock-screen image when the relevant toggle is enabled. |
FAQ
Where is the default Windows 11 wallpaper stored?
Open C:WindowsWebWallpaper. For high-resolution variants, also check C:WindowsWeb4K.

Built-in lock-screen pictures are commonly in C:WindowsWebScreen. If the lock screen uses Windows Spotlight, downloaded images are cached under %LocalAppData%PackagesMicrosoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewyLocalStateAssets.
Where is my custom Windows 11 wallpaper saved?
Windows normally does not move the original custom image. It remains in the folder where you selected it, such as Pictures or Downloads. Windows may also create a rendered copy in %AppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemes.
Why do Spotlight files have strange names and no extensions?
The Spotlight cache stores downloaded items with cryptic names and normally no .jpg or .png extension. Copy a file elsewhere before testing or renaming it, because the cache is periodically refreshed.
How do I stop Windows 11 from changing my wallpaper?
Check Settings > Personalization > Background for Slideshow or Windows Spotlight. If the wallpaper still reverts, clear the TranscodedWallpaper file and CachedFiles folder under %AppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemes, restart the PC, and set the image again. A work or school policy can also override the setting.

The Bottom Line
Use C:WindowsWebWallpaper for built-in desktop wallpapers and C:WindowsWebScreen for stock lock-screen images. For a user-selected desktop picture, look first in the folder where you saved it, then check %AppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemes for Windows’ cached copy. For Windows Spotlight, use the ContentDeliveryManager Assets folder, but treat it as a temporary cache rather than a reliable record of the current image.
