You can try ChatGPT without creating an account by opening chatgpt.com, entering a prompt, and submitting it. OpenAI’s Help Center says signed-out access is available in supported countries, but it has a key limitation: you can use only one conversation at a time, and it is not saved to normal chat history.
Guest access is best for a quick question you do not need to revisit. OpenAI also says logged-out chats are used to train its models by default, though you can turn that off in the browser where you use ChatGPT.
How to use ChatGPT without an account
- Open chatgpt.com in a supported browser.
- Enter your question or instruction in the text box.
- Submit the prompt.
No command, terminal instruction, or special URL parameter is required. If the feature is available in your location, you can start from the main ChatGPT screen. OpenAI says account-free access is being rolled out across supported countries and is not available in Europe except the United Kingdom. The catch: only one conversation
When you use ChatGPT while signed out, you can have only one conversation at a time. You can continue sending messages in that conversation, but there is no normal list of separate chats to manage.

Selecting New Chat ends access to the current signed-out conversation. The earlier conversation is no longer accessible after you start a new one. Signed-out chats are not saved to chat history and remain available only during the current session in the same browser. Logging out also means you cannot continue that conversation afterward. This makes signed-out access suitable for a quick question, but inconvenient for research, troubleshooting, or any exchange you may need to revisit. Copy anything useful before starting a new chat, closing the session, clearing cookies, or logging out.
What happens if you create an account later?
Creating an account does not recover every conversation you started while signed out. OpenAI says only the latest conversation thread appears in the account’s left sidebar; other previous logged-out conversations cannot all be saved. Your chats may be used for training by default
Using ChatGPT without an account does not automatically exclude your messages from model training. OpenAI says logged-out chats are used to train its models by default. You can change the setting on the web without signing in: OpenAI Help Center.
- Click the ? icon in the bottom-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
The signed-out preference is tied to the browser. OpenAI says it is reset if you clear cookies, switch browsers, or change devices, so do not assume that opting out once applies everywhere. OpenAI Help Center.
For comparison, a signed-in user can change the setting by selecting the profile icon, choosing Settings, opening Data Controls, and turning off Improve the model for everyone. Account-free use versus Temporary Chat
These are separate privacy options. Being signed out is mainly an access and account-status choice; it is not the same as starting a Temporary Chat.
If you have an account and want a conversation that does not appear in history, open a new chat and select the pill-shaped Temporary button in the top-right corner. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create memories, and are not used to improve its models. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Temporary Chat is not an absolute “no context” mode. ChatGPT may use limited information from previous conversations for safety and security, and enabled custom instructions still apply. If a GPT used in Temporary Chat has actions, information sent through those actions is handled under the recipient’s privacy policy; the third party may retain it longer than 30 days or use it for other purposes. Which option should you use?

What this change does—and does not—mean
ChatGPT no longer universally requires an account before you can try it, but access depends on location and signed-out use is limited to one conversation that is not saved to normal chat history. In practice, account-free ChatGPT is best treated as a temporary trial rather than an anonymous replacement for a normal account.

Can I start multiple chats without an account?
No. While signed out, you can have only one conversation at a time. Choosing New Chat ends access to the current conversation.
Does ChatGPT save chats when I am signed out?

Will creating an account restore my previous guest chats?
