To pin a frequently used website, open it in a normal tab, right-click the tab, and select Pin tab. The pinned tab stays compact at the left of that Edge window’s tab strip; it is not the same as saving a Favorite, installing a site as an app, or opening a page at startup.
How to pin a tab in Microsoft Edge
- Open the website you use frequently in Microsoft Edge.
- Right-click the website’s tab at the top of the browser window.
- Select Pin tab.
Edge moves the tab to the left side of the tab strip and reduces it to a smaller tab showing the site’s icon. The page remains open while that Edge window is running.
How to unpin a tab
- Right-click the pinned tab’s icon on the left side of the tab strip.
- Select Unpin tab.
The tab returns to the regular tab strip. You can also close it from the same context menu if you no longer need it open.
There is no Settings toggle or keyboard shortcut
Tab pinning is a tab-strip command, not an Edge setting. The current Microsoft Edge policy catalog contains no policy for pinning browser tabs. The similarly named PinBrowserEssentialsToolbarButton policy pins the Browser essentials toolbar button, not a website tab. (Microsoft Edge policy catalog)

Microsoft’s current Edge shortcut list does not document a keyboard shortcut for Pin tab. Do not rely on commands such as Ctrl+Shift+P for this action; use the tab’s right-click menu. (Microsoft Edge keyboard shortcuts)
What pinned tabs do—and do not do

Pinning a tab is useful for an account dashboard, webmail inbox, project board, or other page that should stay visible during a work session. It is not a permanent bookmark.
Save the website if you need it after Edge closes
For a page that must remain available between sessions, add it to Favorites:
- Open the website.
- Select Settings and more (…) > Favorites > More options (…) > Add this page to favorites.
- Choose a folder if necessary, then select Done.
You can also select Add this page to favorites from the address bar and then choose Done. (Add a site to Favorites)

Open frequently used pages automatically at startup
If you want certain websites to reopen whenever Edge starts, configure startup pages instead of relying on tab pinning.
Using Edge’s interface
- Select Settings and more (…) > Settings.
- Open Start, home, and new tabs.
- Under the startup section, choose the option for opening a specific page or pages.
- Add each website you want Edge to open.
The exact wording can vary by Edge release; the relevant behavior is Open a list of URLs.
Using Microsoft Edge enterprise policies
Administrators can configure startup behavior under the Windows policy path:

For a URL list, set entries under RestoreOnStartupURLs. For example:

Install a website as an app instead
Choose this option when you want the site to open in its own window and have a launcher outside Edge’s normal tab strip:

- Select Settings and more (…) > Apps > Install site as an app.
- Confirm the app name and select Install.
- When prompted, choose the option to pin it to the Windows Start menu or taskbar.
Install site as an app is the current command label. Older instructions may call it Install this site as an app or Install app, but those are older names for the app-install feature, not tab pinning. (Apps and widgets that depend on Microsoft Edge)
Do not use old Workspaces instructions for tab pinning
Older Edge Workspaces guidance sometimes recommends a Locking tabs feature. Microsoft’s comparison says the previous Workspaces implementation required Edge 114 or later and supported tab locking. The current Workspaces implementation requires Edge 144 or later and does not support tab locking.
Current Workspaces require desktop Windows 10, Windows 11, or macOS; Edge version 144 or later; and sign-in with a Microsoft account or Microsoft Entra ID account. Workspaces organize browsing activity, but they are not a replacement for ordinary browser-tab pinning. (Getting started with Microsoft Edge Workspaces)
Common mistakes
- Looking for a Settings switch: there is no tab-pinning setting to enable.
- Confusing Favorites with pinned tabs: a Favorite saves a link; it does not keep a live tab open.
- Confusing the taskbar with the tab strip: pinning an installed site app to the taskbar creates a separate launcher.
- Expecting a pinned tab to survive every restart: use session restoration or startup URLs when automatic reopening matters.
- Following old Tabs set aside or Reading list instructions: those legacy Edge features are no longer supported in the new Edge. Retained data is available under Favorites > Other favorites. (Find your Reading list, Web Notes, and Tabs in Microsoft Edge)

Why can’t I find an Enable tab pinning option in Edge Settings?
Microsoft Edge does not expose tab pinning as a Settings toggle or enterprise policy. Open the website, right-click its tab, and select Pin tab.

Is there a keyboard shortcut for pinning an Edge tab?
Microsoft’s current Windows and macOS shortcut lists do not document a shortcut for Pin tab. Use the tab’s context menu.
Will a pinned Edge tab reopen after I restart my computer?
Not necessarily. A pinned tab belongs to an open Edge window. To reopen pages at startup, enable session restoration or configure a list of startup URLs.
How do I keep a frequently used website available without keeping its tab open?
Add it to Favorites through Settings and more (…) > Favorites > More options (…) > Add this page to favorites. Press Ctrl+Shift+B on Windows or Command+Shift+B on macOS to show the Favorites bar.

No. Microsoft says the new Workspaces implementation does not support tab locking. Instructions describing that feature refer to the previous Workspaces version.
The Bottom Line
To pin a currently open website, right-click its tab and select Pin tab; there is no separate feature to enable and no documented keyboard shortcut. Use Favorites for saved links, Install site as an app for a separate launcher, or startup URL and session-restoration settings when pages need to reopen automatically.
