An iPhone is not made in one country from start to finish. Apple designs the product in California, sources components from a global supplier network, and uses contract manufacturers for final assembly. The two countries you can currently identify as iPhone final-assembly locations are mainland China and India.
That distinction matters: a supplier location is not automatically an iPhone assembly location. Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, the United States, and other countries contribute components or manufacturing services, but that does not mean complete iPhones are assembled there.
Where are iPhones assembled?
Apple’s current supply-chain information identifies iPhone assembly in mainland China. India has also become a major final-assembly base. Bloomberg reported that Apple assembled approximately 55 million iPhones in India during 2025, compared with about 36 million in 2024. That was roughly one-quarter of Apple’s estimated global iPhone output, although Apple did not publicly disclose the figures.

So the short answer is: an individual iPhone was most likely assembled in either mainland China or India, but the country depends on the model, production run, destination market, and Apple’s manufacturing allocation at the time.

What does “Made in” mean for an iPhone?
“Made in” generally refers to the country where the product received its final assembly. It does not mean that every part originated there.
Apple says substantially all of its hardware final assembly is performed by outsourcing partners, primarily in Asia. The components themselves come from a much wider network. A single iPhone can include parts manufactured or processed in several countries before the final device is assembled, tested, packaged, and shipped.
For example, Apple’s supplier information lists manufacturing locations in mainland China, India, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, the United States, Germany, France, Mexico, and other countries. That is a list of supplier locations—not a list of countries where complete iPhones are produced.
Which companies assemble iPhones?
Apple does not normally assemble iPhones in its own factories. It works with manufacturing partners, including Foxconn and Pegatron, which operate production facilities in multiple countries.

- Foxconn (Hon Hai): manufacturing locations in mainland China, Tamil Nadu in India, Bac Giang in Vietnam, and California.
- Pegatron: manufacturing locations in mainland China and Tamil Nadu, India.
- LG Display: locations in mainland China, South Korea, and Hai Phong, Vietnam.
- Samsung Electronics: locations in mainland China, South Korea, Vietnam, and Texas.
- TSMC: locations in mainland China, Taiwan, and Washington state.
These examples show why a supplier’s presence in a country is not enough to prove that complete iPhones are assembled there. Apple’s publicly available supplier PDF is labeled Supplier List FY22, so it should not be treated as a complete 2026 supplier roster or as proof that every listed facility currently makes parts for a particular iPhone model.

Why is Apple assembling more iPhones in India?
Apple has been expanding Indian production while continuing to use China. India provides an additional large manufacturing base and helps Apple diversify its supply chain. The expansion also supports sales in India and can reduce the company’s dependence on a single production center.
This does not mean China stopped making iPhones. Apple’s current supply-chain page still identifies “iPhone assembly, China mainland,” and its 2025 Form 10-K continues to list mainland China among its primary manufacturing and sourcing locations.
Production is also not divided by a permanent rule such as “all iPhone Pro models are made in one country” or “all phones for a particular market come from one factory.” Apple can adjust output between facilities, suppliers, and markets. Two iPhones with the same model name can therefore have different assembly countries.
Does Vietnam make the iPhone?
Vietnam is part of Apple’s supply chain, but the available current evidence does not establish Vietnam as a country where complete iPhones are currently assembled. Apple identifies Vietnam primarily in connection with component manufacturing and supplier-related operations.
It is therefore more accurate to say that Vietnam makes components for Apple products, rather than simply saying that Vietnam makes the iPhone. The same caution applies to countries such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, and the United States: they may contribute important parts or manufacturing work without being the final-assembly location for a complete iPhone.

Does “Designed by Apple in California” mean the iPhone is made in the USA?
No. “Designed by Apple in California” describes the product’s design origin, not its final manufacturing location.
Apple’s U.S. operations and suppliers contribute to components, engineering, manufacturing, logistics, repair, and other activities. However, Apple’s regulatory filing says substantially all hardware final assembly is performed by outsourcing partners primarily in Asia. The phrase on the packaging should not be read as “assembled in the United States.”
How to check where your particular iPhone was made
The most reliable places to look are the original packaging and any regulatory or manufacturing marking on the device, where present. Apple’s support documentation confirms that the original packaging contains device-identification information and serves as a product-specific source of information.
- Check the back, side, or base of the original box for a manufacturing or assembly statement, such as “Assembled in China” or “Assembled in India.”
- Check the device itself for regulatory or manufacturing markings if your model and region display them.
- Use the iPhone’s identifier page to confirm the device and model information: Settings > General > About.
- Compare the model and serial information with the original packaging to make sure the box belongs to that phone.
The About screen can show the serial number, EID, IMEI/MEID, ICCID, and model information. Those fields help identify and support the device, but Apple does not document them as a direct assembly-country lookup.
Can the serial number reveal the assembly country?
Not reliably. There is no public Apple-supported command or menu that converts an iPhone’s serial number, IMEI, EID, or model identifier into a verified assembly-country result.

Serial-number formats and manufacturing conventions can change, and online “decoder” sites may make claims that Apple does not support. Do not assume that a serial-number prefix proves the phone was assembled in China or India.

No. The part-number suffix identifies a sales region or market configuration. It may indicate where the phone was intended to be sold or which cellular and regulatory configuration it uses, but it is not an assembly-country code.
For the same reason, a regional code associated with the United States, Japan, China, or another market does not prove that the iPhone was manufactured in that country. Use the packaging or a device marking for the physical origin, not the sales-region suffix.

Apple operates a multi-site production network. It can allocate orders between factories and partners based on demand, component availability, production capacity, tariffs, logistics, and the destination market.
As a result, two phones sold under the same iPhone model name may have different final-assembly countries. The difference does not necessarily indicate a different quality level. Both devices are manufactured to Apple’s specifications, although their cellular bands, SIM arrangements, warranty terms, or other market features can differ for regional reasons.

Production shares can also change quickly. For example, reporting in April 2025 described U.S.-sold iPhones as being sourced from China and India in an approximate 4:1 ratio at that time. That was a historical snapshot, not a permanent rule. India’s estimated output increased substantially during 2025.

Can an iPhone IMEI or serial number identify its manufacturing country?
Not through a documented Apple-supported method. Apple provides these identifiers for device identification and support, not as a country-of-assembly decoder.
Does an iPhone made in India differ from one made in China?
Both should be built to Apple’s specifications. Differences between regional versions are more likely to involve cellular bands, SIM configuration, or other market requirements than the assembly country itself.

Bottom line: iPhones are not made in just one country. The current verified final-assembly countries are mainland China and India, while parts come from suppliers across Asia, the United States, and other regions. To identify your own phone’s origin, check its original box or manufacturing marking. Do not use the serial number, IMEI, or model suffix as proof of the assembly country.
