To activate Windows 10 from Command Prompt, you need a valid digital license or 25-character product key; CMD cannot create a license. For Microsoft’s documented offline method, run SLMGR /dti as administrator, submit the Installation ID through Microsoft’s Product Activation Portal to get a Confirmation ID, then run SLMGR /atp with that ID and verify using SLMGR /dli.
For online activation, Windows attempts activation over the internet when connected. Use the method that matches your license and device; KMS is for organization-managed volume licensing, not a consumer shortcut.

Before you start
Windows 10 activation requires a digital license or a 25-character product key. A digital license does not require you to enter a key. The license or key must match the installed Windows version and edition; for example, an Enterprise key does not activate Home or Pro.
Microsoft Support explains that activation helps verify that Windows is genuine and has not been used on more devices than the Microsoft Software License Terms allow. If a key has already been used on too many devices, use a valid license for each device.

Check your Windows 10 edition
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Get-CurrentEdition
You can also check the graphical activation page at Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation. To see the Windows version and build, press Windows key + R, enter winver, and press Enter.
Activate Windows 10 online
If your PC has a valid product key, install the key and request online activation. Connect to the internet first. Windows may activate automatically when online if the device has an eligible digital license.
- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Install your genuine, edition-matching key by running slmgr.vbs /ipk YOUR-25-CHARACTER-KEY. Replace the placeholder with your key.
- Request activation by running slmgr.vbs /ato.
A Windows Script Host dialog reports the result. If you have a digital license, you do not need to enter a key; connect to the internet and check Settings > Update & Security > Activation. Use the Activation troubleshooter if offered.
Activate Windows 10 offline with an Installation ID
Microsoft documents an offline procedure that uses an Installation ID and a Confirmation ID. It requires an eligible license; it is not a workaround for a missing or invalid license.
- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Run SLMGR /dti. Windows Script Host displays the Installation ID.
- Open Microsoft’s Product Activation Portal, complete its prompts, and choose Activate a Microsoft Product > Windows > Windows 10. Submit the Installation ID and obtain the Confirmation ID.
- Return to Command Prompt and run SLMGR /atp YOUR-CONFIRMATION-ID, substituting the ID you received. Do not include angle brackets, hyphens, or spaces in the entered ID.
- Verify activation by running SLMGR /dli.
Choose the activation path that fits your license

Activate a digital license after a hardware change
A major hardware change can affect a device’s digital license. Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation and use the troubleshooter if available. Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the license and follow the on-screen steps. The option may not work if the license was not linked to that account or the Windows edition has changed.
KMS activation for company or school computers
Key Management Service (KMS) is an organization’s volume-activation method, not a free retail activation method. Microsoft documents a KMS activation threshold of 25 computers. If your work or school PC uses KMS, contact its support person rather than using an internet KMS server or an unrelated key.
KMS requires the organization’s licensing setup and access to its KMS host. Do not present a generic volume license key as a standalone activation key; it does not replace the required organization-managed service.

Repeatedly running activation commands will not fix a license mismatch or missing entitlement. If the key is blocked, invalid, or assigned to another device, contact Microsoft, the device manufacturer, or your organization’s administrator as appropriate.

Special editions: Pro EDU and Pro for Workstations
Microsoft’s instructions for Windows 10 Pro EDU and Pro for Workstations differ from generic activation guidance. These editions require internet activation; Microsoft says phone activation using SLUI 04 is unavailable. Enter a new key through Settings rather than injecting it using SLMGR.
Windows 10 support has ended
Microsoft Support says Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Activation does not restore technical assistance, feature updates, or security updates. Windows continues to function, but consider an eligible Windows 11 device or check Microsoft’s current guidance for consumer Extended Security Updates. Microsoft says consumer ESU can protect eligible devices until October 12, 2027; check current eligibility and enrollment details before relying on it.

Can CMD activate Windows 10 without a license?
No. CMD can manage activation for an existing entitlement, but it cannot create a valid license or activate an unlicensed copy.
What is the Microsoft-documented offline activation command?
Run SLMGR /dti as administrator to display the Installation ID. Obtain a Confirmation ID through Microsoft’s Product Activation Portal, run SLMGR /atp with that ID, then verify with SLMGR /dli.

Can I use KMS to activate my personal PC?
KMS is for organization-managed volume activation against an organization’s host. It is not a consumer activation method; contact your work or school support person if your device is managed by KMS.
Can I use SLUI 04 for Pro EDU or Pro for Workstations?
No. Microsoft says these editions require internet activation and that phone activation using SLUI 04 is unavailable. Enter a new key through Settings, not SLMGR.
