1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWindows 11 can lock your PC when you walk away with your Bluetooth-paired phone. The feature is called Dynamic Lock. It does not unlock the PC when you return, and it is not an instant proximity alarm: Windows waits for the Bluetooth signal to fall out of range and for the computer to be idle, then normally locks it within about one minute.
To use it, pair your phone with Windows over Bluetooth and enable Allow Windows to automatically lock your device when you’re away in Sign-in options.
What you need before enabling Dynamic Lock
Dynamic Lock uses your phone’s Bluetooth connection as a proximity signal. You need:
- A Windows 11 PC with working Bluetooth. A compatible USB Bluetooth adapter can be used if the PC has no built-in Bluetooth.
- A phone that can pair with the PC over Bluetooth.
- Bluetooth enabled on both devices.
- The phone to remain paired with the PC. Installing or signing in to Phone Link is not enough.
Dynamic Lock is a backup safeguard rather than a replacement for pressing Windows + L before leaving. If someone uses the PC before Windows detects that your phone has moved away, the computer might not lock as expected.

How to test Dynamic Lock
- Leave the phone powered on, with Bluetooth enabled and connected to the PC.
- Check that the Dynamic Lock checkbox is selected.
- Walk far enough away for the Bluetooth connection to drop, or take the phone to another location.
- Wait up to approximately one minute.
- Confirm that Windows displays the lock screen.
There is no universal lock distance. Walls, interference, the phone, the PC’s Bluetooth adapter, and the surrounding environment all affect signal strength. Dynamic Lock responds to a Bluetooth signal threshold, not a fixed distance such as 10 or 30 feet.
Windows also requires the system to be idle before Dynamic Lock locks it. For that reason, the feature may not lock an actively used computer immediately after the phone leaves range.
Fix Dynamic Lock when it cannot find your phone
Check the basic Bluetooth conditions
If the Dynamic Lock section says that no phone can be found, check these items:
- Bluetooth is enabled under Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- The phone is powered on and Bluetooth is enabled.
- The phone is close to the PC during setup.
- The phone appears under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
- The phone has sufficient battery charge.
- Airplane mode is disabled.
- The Bluetooth connection is stable rather than repeatedly disconnecting.
A phone that is switched off, out of range, low on battery, not discoverable during pairing, or affected by a driver or Bluetooth service problem can prevent setup.

Microsoft’s documented default rule is:
<rule schemaVersion=”1.0″>
<signal type=”bluetooth” scenario=”Dynamic Lock” classOfDevice=”512″ rssiMin=”-10″ rssiMaxDelta=”-10″/>
</rule>
The documented supported device class is Phone. The Bluetooth type and Dynamic Lock scenario values cannot be changed. Microsoft recommends keeping the default values unless they have been tested in the target environment, because the measurements are relative and can behave differently in different buildings and room layouts.

What Dynamic Lock does not do
| Claim | What actually happens |
|---|---|
| It unlocks the PC when you return. | No. Returning to Bluetooth range is not authentication. You must sign in using your configured method. |
| It locks instantly at a fixed distance. | No. Windows reacts to Bluetooth signal strength and normally locks within about one minute after the signal is lost. |
| It locks immediately even while someone is using the PC. | Not necessarily. Dynamic Lock requires the system to be idle. |
| Phone Link enables the feature. | No. The phone must be Bluetooth-paired with Windows. |
| Any Bluetooth accessory works in the same way as a phone. | Microsoft’s documented Dynamic Lock scenario is a Bluetooth-paired phone. |
| It is a complete security solution. | No. It is an additional barrier. Manually lock the PC whenever you leave it unattended. |

FAQ
How long does Windows 11 take to lock with Dynamic Lock?
Microsoft says the PC normally locks within about one minute after the phone leaves Bluetooth range. The exact timing depends on the Bluetooth connection and whether Windows considers the system idle.
How far away does the phone need to be?
There is no guaranteed distance. Dynamic Lock uses a Bluetooth signal threshold, and walls, interference, the phone, and the PC’s Bluetooth adapter affect when the signal drops far enough.
Can Dynamic Lock unlock my PC when I return?
No. Dynamic Lock only locks the PC. Returning with the paired phone does not authenticate you or unlock Windows.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Dynamic Lock work with Phone Link?
Phone Link alone does not enable Dynamic Lock. Pair the phone with the PC through Windows Bluetooth settings, then enable Dynamic Lock under Accounts > Sign-in options.
Why is Dynamic Lock unavailable even though my phone is paired?
Remove the phone from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, restart both devices, pair the phone again, and re-enable Dynamic Lock. Also check Bluetooth drivers and connection stability.
The Bottom Line
Enable Dynamic Lock from Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options after pairing your phone through Bluetooth. It is useful for reducing the chance of leaving an unlocked PC behind, but it is deliberately not an instant or guaranteed lock. For sensitive work, press Windows + L yourself before walking away.
