OneDrive is Microsoft’s cloud-storage service and Windows app for syncing files between a Windows 11 PC and a OneDrive account. After you sign in and set up syncing, OneDrive files appear in File Explorer and supported changes sync between the PC and the cloud. OneDrive does not automatically back up every file or folder on your computer.
What OneDrive does on Windows 11
The OneDrive app connects Windows to a personal or work or school account. You can save files in the OneDrive folder to sync them with the cloud, then access them from OneDrive or other devices signed in to that account. You can also choose This PC when saving a file if you want it stored locally instead.
Sync works both ways: adding, editing, or deleting a file in a synced location can affect its cloud copy and other synced devices. Deleting a synced file is not merely removing a local copy; it may be recoverable from the OneDrive recycle bin. See Microsoft’s OneDrive sync guidance.
OneDrive options compared
| Option | What it means | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Save to OneDrive | Files in the synced location can sync with the cloud account. | Cloud access and syncing depend on the account and connection. |
| Save to This PC | Save a file to a local folder instead of a OneDrive location. | The file is not included in OneDrive sync just because the app is installed. |
| Online-only with Files On-Demand | A file appears in File Explorer without its full contents stored locally. | Saves local space, but an internet connection is required to open it. |
| Downloaded or always available | The file is stored on the PC and can be opened offline. | Uses local storage. |
| Back up selected Windows folders | Configure supported folders, such as Desktop or Documents, to be included in OneDrive. | Folder backup is optional; understand file-location changes before stopping it. |
Use Files On-Demand in File Explorer
Files On-Demand lets File Explorer show OneDrive files without downloading every file. Microsoft describes a blue cloud for online-only files, a green check for locally available files, and a green circle with a white check for files set to remain on the device. Online-only files need an internet connection to open; downloaded files can be opened offline. See Microsoft’s guide to synced files in File Explorer.

Back up selected Windows folders
OneDrive folder backup is a setting for selected Windows folders, not a complete backup of the entire PC. Microsoft’s instructions let you manage backup for supported folders such as Desktop and Documents. Check the setting rather than assuming it is enabled.
When you stop backing up a folder, files already uploaded may remain in OneDrive rather than their former device-folder location. If you want them back in the original location, you may need to move them manually. Review Microsoft’s folder-backup instructions before changing the setting.

Save files to OneDrive or This PC
When you save a file, choose a OneDrive location for syncing or This PC for local storage. You can also change the default save location. Microsoft explains the choices in its default save-location guide.
Unlink OneDrive from a PC
Unlinking disconnects the PC’s sync relationship with the account; it is not the same as deleting the OneDrive account. Microsoft’s unlink instructions use the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area, then Settings and the Account tab. After you link the account again, files may initially appear as placeholders to save disk space. Follow Microsoft’s unlink and re-link instructions.

FAQ
Does OneDrive automatically back up everything on my Windows 11 PC?
No. OneDrive syncs files in its synced locations, and you can separately configure backup for selected Windows folders. Its presence does not mean every file on the PC is backed up.
Does deleting a file from OneDrive remove it from the cloud?
Deleting a file in a synced OneDrive location can delete its cloud copy and affect other synced devices. The file may be recoverable from the OneDrive recycle bin.
