If this PC already has a Windows 11 digital license, you can activate it without typing a product key. If it has neither a digital license nor a product key, Microsoft requires you to obtain a license; after installation, use Activation settings to go to the Microsoft Store.
A digital license is tied to the device, and linking it to your Microsoft account can help you reactivate Windows after certain hardware changes. The installed Windows edition must match the license.
What “without a product key” means
Windows can be activated with a product key or a digital license. A digital license lets Windows activate without entering a key, while a product key is a 25-character code.
If the PC has neither a digital license nor a valid product key, you can install Windows 11, but you cannot legitimately activate it until you obtain a license. A command, script, generic key, or bypass is not a Microsoft-supported way to activate an unlicensed copy.

Check whether Windows 11 is activated
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Check the activation status and the installed edition.
The Activation page indicates whether Windows is activated, including whether activation uses a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.
Activate Windows 11 with an existing digital license
- Connect the PC to the internet.
- Sign in to Windows with the Microsoft account linked to the digital license, if applicable.
- Open Settings > System > Activation and check the status.
- If Windows is not activated, select Troubleshoot and follow the on-screen instructions. You may need to be signed in as an administrator.
The installed edition must match the license. For example, a Pro license requires Windows 11 Pro; a Home license does not activate Pro. If you installed the wrong edition, install or upgrade to the edition covered by your license.
Skip the product key during Windows 11 installation
If you are reinstalling Windows on a device that already has a digital license, you can skip entering a key and install the edition that was previously licensed.
- Start Windows Setup from installation media.
- When asked for a product key, select I don’t have a product key.
- Choose the Windows 11 edition that matches the device’s license.
- Complete setup and connect to the internet.
- Open Settings > System > Activation to check the status.
Reactivate Windows 11 after a hardware change
A significant hardware change, such as replacing the motherboard, can prevent Windows from finding the digital license associated with the device. Linking the license to a Microsoft account helps with recovery, but a hardware change does not create a new license.

- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the digital license.
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Choose I changed hardware on this device recently.
- Select the current device from the list and choose Activate.
The troubleshooter option is available when Windows is not activated. The edition installed must still match the license.
What to do if Windows 11 will not activate

Get a license if you do not have one
If the PC has neither a digital license nor a product key, the documented consumer purchase route is through the Microsoft Store:
- Complete Windows installation.
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Go to Store and follow the purchase instructions.
Check that the license you obtain covers the Windows edition you intend to use. Marketplace listings do not by themselves establish that a seller or key is valid.
