You can sign in to Windows 11 with a work account by joining the PC to your organization’s Microsoft Entra ID. For a personal PC, register the account to access work apps and resources without using it as your Windows sign-in. Windows 11 Home does not support Microsoft Entra join.
Before you start: choose the right sign-in method

Microsoft Entra join is supported on all Windows 11 editions except Home. Microsoft’s current service name is Microsoft Entra ID, though Windows may still display the older wording Azure Active Directory.
Sign in to an existing Windows 11 PC with a work account
Use these steps when your organization wants the work account available at the Windows sign-in screen.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts, then Access work or school.
- Select Connect.
- On Set up a work or school account, select Join this device to Azure Active Directory.
- Enter your work email address on Let’s get you signed in and select Next.
- Enter your password and select Sign in.
- Approve the sign-in or device request on your mobile device if prompted.
- On Make sure this is your organization, verify the organization information and select Join.
- When Windows displays You’re all set, select Done.
Sign out of Windows or restart the PC. At the sign-in screen, select Sign-in options or Other user if necessary, then enter your work email address and password.

What may happen during the join
Your organization may require Windows Hello, such as a PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition. The organization may also require multifactor authentication during joining or registration.
Conditional Access policies can block access or require conditions such as multifactor authentication, device compliance, encryption, or approved device management. If access is blocked, contact your organization’s administrator.
Set up a new Windows 11 PC with a work account
During Windows setup, you can use your organization account to set up a new PC.
- On Sign in with Microsoft, enter your work or school email address.
- Enter your password.
- Approve the device request on your mobile device if prompted.
- Complete the remaining setup screens, including privacy settings and Windows Hello when required.
Add a work account without using it to sign in to Windows
On a personal PC, registration adds a work account for organizational resources without making it your Windows sign-in account. Your organization must permit personal devices.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts, then Access work or school.
- Select Connect.
- On Add a work or school account, enter your work email address and select Next.
- Sign in, complete verification, and configure Windows Hello if requested.
This registers the device with the organization, but does not make the work account your Windows logon identity. The account is available to organizational resources and may trigger optional device-management enrollment.

Understand the management and privacy choice
Read the management prompt before accepting. If device management is enabled and accepted, your organization may install applications, enforce security policies, deploy updates, restrict operating-system access, block personal devices, or remove data from a lost or stolen device. Microsoft says the organization directory may also contain device information such as its name, Windows version, join type, owner, management configuration, compliance status, registration date, and last-active information.
Sign in to only one work app
When an app such as Outlook or Edge asks whether to add your work account to Windows, you may see an Entra account-registration page. Microsoft says this page appears only for Microsoft Entra accounts.
- Select Yes to make the account available to compatible desktop and web apps. This registers the device in the organization’s directory and may enable automatic sign-in.
- Select No, this app only to sign in only to the current app. The account is not added under Windows Settings, the device is not registered through this flow, and other apps do not receive the account.
Choosing No, this app only also prevents the device-management screen from appearing in this documented app-registration flow.

Check whether Windows joined or registered the PC
Run dsregcmd /status in Command Prompt from the relevant user’s normal session.
- Open Command Prompt from the Start menu.
- Enter
dsregcmd /statusand press Enter. - Check the output for the relevant status:

Microsoft notes that WamDefaultSet can show an error when the command is run from an elevated Command Prompt; check it in the normal user context. You can also check Settings > Accounts > Access work or school. A successful join should show text similar to Connected to [organization] Entra ID.

Fix common work-account sign-in problems
The work account appears under Access work or school, but not at sign-in
The account may have been registered rather than joined. Registration provides access to apps and organizational resources but does not create a Windows sign-in identity. Run dsregcmd /status and check whether AzureAdJoined is YES.
The “Join this device” link is missing
Windows 11 Home does not support Microsoft Entra join. The organization may also restrict user-initiated joins or the account may lack permission to join devices. Contact your organization’s administrator.

Multifactor authentication keeps failing
Check that you are responding to the request for the current sign-in. If you cannot complete the method required by your organization, contact its administrator.
The join succeeds but company resources remain blocked
Conditional Access may require multifactor authentication, device compliance, encryption, or approved device management. Contact your organization’s administrator if access remains blocked.
Windows accepts the account but does not offer it as a Windows sign-in
That may indicate registration or app sign-in rather than an Entra join. Confirm the device state with dsregcmd /status. Adding a work email address alone does not join a device.

Remove the work account
On the PC, open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, select the connected work account, and choose Disconnect. This removes the account’s sign-in information and data from the device; it does not delete the organization’s account.
If you no longer have access to the PC, visit myaccount.microsoft.com/device-list, expand the device details, and select Disable lost device if that option is available.
Windows 11 versions and support
As of August 7, 2026, Microsoft lists Windows 11 26H1, 25H2, 24H2, and 23H2 as generally available. Version 26H1 is scoped to new devices released in early 2026 and is not offered as an in-place feature update from 24H2 or 25H2 on existing PCs. Support end dates vary by edition and version.

Can I sign in to Windows 11 with a work account?
Yes, if the PC supports Microsoft Entra join and your organization allows it. Windows 11 Home cannot be Microsoft Entra joined.
Why can’t I use my work email at the Windows sign-in screen?
The account may have been registered for apps rather than used to join the PC. Check dsregcmd /status for AzureAdJoined : YES.

What is the difference between Azure AD join and Microsoft Entra join?
They refer to the same type of device join. Microsoft renamed Azure Active Directory to Microsoft Entra ID, but Windows may still use the older Azure Active Directory wording.
Should I select “Yes” or “No, this app only”?
Select Yes to make the account available to compatible apps and register the device. Select No, this app only if you want the account used only in the current app and not added to Windows.
Can my employer manage my personal Windows 11 PC?
If you add the work account device-wide and accept management, the organization may enforce policies, install apps or updates, require compliance, restrict access, or remove work data. Review the management prompt before accepting.
How do I remove a work account from Windows 11?
Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, select the account, and choose Disconnect. This removes its device sign-in information and data but does not delete the organization account.
