Windows 11 includes Microsoft Edge, but you can install Google Chrome alongside it without removing or changing Edge. The normal Chrome installation takes only a few steps: download the installer from Google, open it, approve the Windows permission prompt, and wait for Chrome to launch.
This guide covers the supported Windows 11 requirements, installation, first-run setup, default-browser choices, profiles, bookmarks, extensions, updates, and the most common problems.
Check that your Windows 11 PC is supported
Google lists Chrome for Windows 10 and later on PCs with an Intel processor, including an Intel Pentium 4 or later with SSE3. Google also lists Chrome support on Windows 11 PCs using ARM processors. In practice, a current Windows 11 computer should meet Chrome’s requirements unless it is unusually old or has a restricted installation environment.
Recommended Free Tools
To check your Windows edition and processor:
- Right-click Start and select System.
- Look under Windows specifications to confirm the edition and version.
- Look under Device specifications to see the processor type.
Chrome’s current support information does not say that Chrome has stopped supporting Windows 10. However, Microsoft’s support for Windows 10 Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education ended on October 14, 2025. That is an operating-system support date, not a Chrome deprecation date. Windows 11 is the better long-term choice for a supported Windows installation.

Download Chrome from Google
- Open Microsoft Edge from the Start menu or taskbar.
- Go to the official Google Chrome download page.
- Select Download Chrome.
- If Edge asks where to save the file, keep the default location or choose a folder you can find easily. The installer is normally saved in
Downloads.
Use Google’s download page rather than a third-party software site. A third-party installer may be repackaged, outdated, or bundled with unwanted software.
Install Google Chrome on Windows 11
- Open File Explorer by pressing Windows+E.
- Open Downloads in the left pane.
- Double-click the Chrome installation file, usually named something similar to
ChromeSetup.exe. - If Windows displays Do you want to run this file?, select Run.
- If Windows displays Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?, select Yes.
- Wait while the installer downloads and installs Chrome. Follow any remaining on-screen instructions.
When installation finishes on Windows 11, a Chrome window opens automatically. You can then sign in, import data, and choose whether Chrome should be your default browser.
The downloaded installation file is no longer needed after Chrome is installed. You can delete it from Downloads to reclaim a small amount of space.

Sign in to a Google Account
Chrome works without a Google Account, but signing in enables synchronization between Chrome installations. Depending on your sync settings, Chrome can synchronize bookmarks, passwords, history, settings, extensions, and other browsing data.
- Select Sign in in the Chrome welcome screen, or select the profile icon near the top-right corner.
- Enter your Google Account details.
- Review the sync choices shown by Chrome.
- Confirm the settings if you want synchronization enabled.
Do not enable synchronization on a shared or public computer unless you understand who can access the synced data. On a work or school computer, your organization may control which sync features are available.

Import bookmarks and saved information from Edge
Chrome can import browsing information from another browser. To do this after setup:
- Select the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Choose Bookmarks and lists, then Import bookmarks and settings.
- Select Microsoft Edge from the browser list.
- Choose the items to import, such as bookmarks, browsing history, or saved passwords.
- Select Import.
If Edge does not appear as an import source, close Edge completely and try again. A managed Windows account or browser policy can also restrict access to saved browser data.

Choose whether Chrome is the default browser
Making Chrome the default browser is optional. You can continue using Edge for links while using Chrome for selected websites or tasks.
To make Chrome the default browser from Chrome:
- Open the three-dot menu and select Settings.
- Select Default browser in the left column.
- Select Make default.
- If Windows opens Settings > Apps > Default apps, select Chrome and assign it to the link and file types you want Chrome to open.
Windows 11 may ask you to set Chrome separately for HTTP, HTTPS, and other file or link types. Follow the Windows prompt rather than assuming that changing one association changes every association.

Fix common installation and startup problems
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| The installer will not open | Download a fresh copy from Google’s Chrome page, then right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator if your Windows account has administrator permission. |
| Windows blocks the installation | Check whether the computer is managed by an employer, school, or family-safety policy. A standard user may need an administrator to approve the installation. |
| The download is incomplete or stuck | Check the internet connection, temporarily retry from another network if available, and make sure security software is not blocking Google’s installer. |
| Chrome is installed but will not start | Restart Windows, then try Chrome again. If it still fails, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Google Chrome, select the three-dot button, and choose Uninstall. Download and reinstall Chrome from Google. |
| Chrome is slow after installing extensions | Open Extensions > Manage extensions and disable recently installed extensions one at a time to identify the cause. |
| A website looks wrong | Reload with Ctrl+R, test the page in an Incognito window, and temporarily disable extensions. If only one site fails, the problem may be with that site rather than Chrome. |
Google’s standard consumer installation instructions do not require a Command Prompt, PowerShell, or msiexec command. For a normal personal installation, downloading and opening the installer is the supported path.
Consumer Chrome versus Chrome Enterprise
Businesses may use Google’s separate Chrome Enterprise download page, where administrators can select a release channel, file type, and architecture and download MSI packages or other deployment bundles. That route is designed for centralized deployment and policy management.
There is not a separate everyday browser product called an “enterprise version” of Chrome. Chrome Enterprise adds management tools and controls; the browser itself is Chrome. For a personal Windows 11 PC, use the ordinary Chrome download page instead of the enterprise download page.

Afterward, sign in if you want sync, import bookmarks from Edge, install only trusted extensions, and decide separately whether Chrome should be your default browser.
