The file is part of the game’s Steamworks files—not a Windows or DirectX component—so downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into a system folder is the wrong fix.
The most common causes are a damaged installation or antivirus software quarantining the file. Restart Windows, check your antivirus quarantine, and then run Steam’s built-in file verification.
1. Restart Windows and Steam
Save your work, restart Windows, and then open Steam again. A restart can release a file that is locked by another process and ensures Steam starts cleanly before it checks the installation.
Do not run verification while antivirus software is performing a scan, a disk defragmentation job is active, or another system-intensive process is using the drive. Also, verify only one game at a time.

2. Check whether antivirus quarantined the DLL
Antivirus software can mistakenly classify a legitimate game file as malicious and move it to quarantine. Check your security product’s quarantine, protection history, or detection history for the affected game.
- Open your antivirus or Windows security product.
- Open its Quarantine, Protection history, or similarly named section.
- Look for an entry associated with the affected game or
steam_api.dll. - If you have verified that the game came from your legitimate Steam installation, mark the file as safe or restore it according to the antivirus product’s instructions.
- Add the game’s installation folder to the antivirus product’s exclusions if it continues to remove the file.
- Run Steam’s file verification after changing the antivirus setting.
Do not broadly disable antivirus protection or approve a DLL from an unknown source. If the detection remains, investigate the detection with the security vendor before restoring the file.
3. Verify the game files in Steam
Steam can compare the installed game with its current records and reacquire missing or corrupted files. Use the current Steam menu labels below:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the game that shows the error. Alternatively, open the game’s library page and click the gear icon.
- Choose Properties….
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
Wait for the process to finish. It may take several minutes, particularly for a large game or a slower drive. When Steam reacquires the missing file, close the properties window and start the game again.

Older instructions may tell you to choose Local Files or Verify integrity of game cache. Those are outdated labels. The current path is Properties… → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
What if Steam says files failed to verify?
A message saying that one or more files failed to verify does not automatically mean the repair failed. Steam says this is normal for most games because some files are local configuration files that should not be replaced. Start the game after verification and check whether the missing-DLL message has gone.
4. Do not download steam_api.dll from a DLL website
There is no universal Steam-supported steam_api.dll download. The file belongs to the individual game’s Steamworks installation. A file from a random DLL site may be malicious, the wrong version, or incompatible with that game.
Do not copy a downloaded DLL into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another game’s installation folder
Do not use regsvr32 on this file. steam_api.dll is not a Windows system file or a DirectX component, and registering it will not repair a Steam game. Installing DirectX is therefore not the supported response to this particular error.

5. If verification does not fix the launch error
If the file is restored but the game still will not start, work through these checks:

| Windows and drivers | Install pending Windows updates and update the relevant hardware drivers, especially the graphics driver. |
| Background software | Close nonessential programs and overlays that may interfere with Steam or the game, then try launching again. |
| Antivirus exclusions | Confirm that the game folder is not being scanned and that the DLL has not been quarantined again. |
| System requirements | Check the game’s Steam store page or documentation to confirm that the PC meets its minimum requirements. |
| Installation location | Run verification again if the game was moved between drives or its library location was recently changed. |
Steam identifies missing or blocked game files as part of its Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable) troubleshooting category. That is why repairing the specific Steam installation is more useful than treating the message as a general Windows DLL problem.
6. Contact Steam Support if the problem continues
If antivirus checks and file verification do not resolve the error, submit a Steam Support ticket. Include the information Steam requests:
- An uncropped screenshot showing the complete error
- A System Report
- A list of programs you removed while troubleshooting
Include the game’s name, when the error began, whether Steam reacquired any files, and whether antivirus software reported or quarantined steam_api.dll. That gives support a useful record of what has already been tested.

FAQ
What is steam_api.dll?
It is a game installation file used by Steamworks. It is associated with the individual Steam game and is not a Windows, DirectX, or general-purpose system DLL.
Why is steam_api.dll missing after installing a Steam game?
The game file may be missing or corrupted, or antivirus software may have mistakenly quarantined it. Steam’s file verification can restore a missing or damaged copy after the security software issue is addressed.
Where is Verify integrity of game files in the current Steam client?
Open Steam, go to Library, right-click the game, choose Properties…, select Installed Files, and click Verify integrity of game files.
Should I download steam_api.dll from the internet?
No. Steam does not provide a universal DLL download, and random DLL sites can supply malicious or incompatible files. Repair the game through Steam instead.

What does “one or more files failed to verify” mean?
It does not necessarily indicate a failed repair. Steam says this can be normal because some local configuration files are not meant to be replaced. Test the game after verification.
Will installing DirectX fix the error?
Not normally. steam_api.dll is not a DirectX or Windows system file. Installing DirectX, registering the DLL with regsvr32, or copying it to a Windows system folder is not the Steam-supported repair path.
The Bottom Line
Restart Windows, check your antivirus quarantine, then use Steam → Library → game → Properties… → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Let Steam restore the game’s files, and do not use a random DLL download. If the error remains, update Windows and drivers, close interfering software, check the game’s requirements, and send Steam Support the requested screenshot and system report.
