Microsoft removed the classic Windows 10 lock/unlock command, so right-clicking the Windows 11 taskbar will not show Lock the taskbar.
If you are trying to change the taskbar’s alignment or hiding behavior, use Windows settings. If settings are blocked or you want to move or resize the taskbar, check whether a work or school policy is restricting it.
Use the normal Windows 11 taskbar settings
For supported taskbar customizations, open:
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar.
- Select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
The standard Windows 11 controls include:
| Setting | Available choices |
|---|---|
| Taskbar alignment | Center or Left |
| Automatically hide the taskbar | On or Off |
Standard Windows 11 normally keeps the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. It does not provide the Windows 10-style controls for moving it to the top or sides, or a classic unlock command.
Why the old “unlock taskbar” instructions do not work
Instructions that say to right-click the taskbar and clear Lock the taskbar are for Windows 10. Windows 10 also had a setting named Taskbar location on screen. These labels are not part of the normal Windows 11 taskbar interface.

You do not need to find a hidden unlock switch before changing the available Windows 11 settings. If a setting is missing or cannot be opened, a policy restriction is a more likely explanation than a locked taskbar.
Check whether Group Policy is restricting the taskbar
On a company, school, or managed Windows 11 PC, an administrator can prevent users from changing taskbar settings. The relevant policies are located at:

On May 15, 2026, Microsoft announced a newer Taskbar position option for Windows Insider builds. The announced control appears under Settings → Personalization → Taskbar → Taskbar behaviors and demonstrates top-positioned taskbars. It is an Insider feature, so it should not be assumed to exist on every Windows 11 installation. It is a position setting, not the old Windows 10 Lock the taskbar feature. Read Microsoft’s announcement.
If your goal is to resize the taskbar
Standard Windows 11 settings do not include a normal taskbar-size slider. If resizing is unavailable on a managed computer, the Prevent users from resizing the taskbar policy may be responsible. Check with the administrator rather than applying random registry tweaks from Windows 10 guides.
Quick diagnosis
| What you see | Likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No “Lock the taskbar” item appears when you right-click | Normal Windows 11 behavior | Use Taskbar settings → Taskbar behaviors. |
| Taskbar settings will not open | A policy may block Taskbar and Start Menu settings | Ask the administrator or inspect Group Policy. |
| You cannot resize the taskbar | Windows 11 has no standard size control, or a resizing policy is enabled | Check Prevent users from resizing the taskbar. |
| You cannot move it to another edge or monitor | Standard Windows 11 does not normally support that move; a policy can also block it | Check your Windows build and the TaskbarNoRedock policy. |
| You cannot change settings on a company PC | Administrative policy or device management | Contact IT rather than removing policy values yourself. |

Where is Lock the taskbar in Windows 11?
It is not in the standard Windows 11 taskbar context menu or Taskbar settings. Guides showing this option are generally describing Windows 10.
Can I move the Windows 11 taskbar to the top?
Standard Windows 11 builds normally keep the taskbar at the bottom. Microsoft announced a Taskbar position option for Windows Insider builds on May 15, 2026, but that feature is not universally available.
Why can’t I change my Windows 11 taskbar settings?
A managed-device policy may block the taskbar settings interface or prevent movement and resizing. Check User Configuration → Administrative Templates → Start Menu and Taskbar, or contact your organization’s administrator.
Does Windows 11 Home have the taskbar Group Policy settings?
Microsoft’s documented ADMX taskbar policies list Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions, not Home. Windows 11 Home therefore does not include those documented Local Group Policy controls.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Standard Windows 11 has no traditional taskbar lock to disable. Use Taskbar settings → Taskbar behaviors for alignment and auto-hide. If settings are blocked or movement and resizing are unavailable, check for administrative policies such as TaskbarLockAll, TaskbarNoRedock, and TaskbarNoResize—especially on a work or school computer.
