The original “50 Useful And Free HTML Newsletter Templates” list is an archive, not a dependable current download directory: it dates to 2011, repeats some template names, and does not verify availability or licensing. For a new campaign, choose a current source based on whether you need downloadable HTML, an editor, or an MJML workflow, then check its license and test the final email in your sending platform.
“Free” does not necessarily mean downloadable HTML or permission for commercial use. Verify the format and terms for the specific template you choose.
What happened to the original list?
The original SmashingApps article was published on June 17, 2011, and displays that date as its last update. It repeats names including ABC Newsletter, ABC Widgets, Free Newsletter Templates, and Company Newsletter, so it does not establish 50 clearly distinct, independently verified templates. These sources offer different workflows: some provide raw HTML, some provide MJML that must be compiled, and others keep editing inside their own platform. Best choices by workflow
For a ready-to-edit HTML file: CodedMails
CodedMails provides raw MJML and precompiled HTML. On a template preview, use View MJML Code in the sidebar to view and copy the source. If you do not use MJML, its compiled HTML can be inserted into Mailchimp, SendGrid, or another email service provider (ESP). CodedMails says its templates include VML and MSO conditional comments for Outlook 2013, 2016, 2019, and Office 365, and states that personal, freelance, commercial, and client use is permitted without licensing restrictions or a paywall. For a small, straightforward code library: Niraj Rajgor
The Niraj Rajgor collection has 17 templates and filters for All, Auth, Ecommerce, Marketing, Newsletter, and Account. It includes an AI Newsletter Emailer and a Product Announcements Emailer.
Choose Preview to inspect a design or Download to get its HTML. Open the file in a text editor and replace the placeholder content, colors, fonts, and images. For a developer-maintained source: MJML
MJML is a component-based source format, not ordinary email HTML. Edit its source and compile it into responsive HTML before placing it in an email tool. EmailToolTester lists more than 20 templates and tags including marketing, transactional, and receipt. Source: EmailToolTester.
MJML can reduce the table and media-query code you write, but it adds a build step. Keep the MJML source in version control and treat the compiled HTML as a build artifact rather than manually editing both files.

- Pick a template by message type. A newsletter, password reset, order receipt, and product announcement have different content and accessibility needs. Do not choose a design only because its browser preview looks attractive.
- Read the license. Look for explicit permission for commercial and client work. The Responsive HTML Email Template repository is MIT-licensed, and CodedMails states that commercial and client use is allowed. Do not infer the same permission for other libraries.
- Download the correct format. A JSON export, MJML file, builder-only bundle, and compiled HTML are not interchangeable. Confirm what your email service accepts before customizing.
- Replace every placeholder. Search for terms such as “YOUR LOGO,” “Read more,” example URLs, dummy addresses, and stock image references. Check hidden preheader text and footer links too.
- Set sender and compliance fields in the ESP. Add a real reply-to address, physical mailing address, unsubscribe link, and preference-management link where required. These are delivery and legal settings, not properties a decorative template can solve.
- Inline CSS when your sending method requires it. Test the actual output that reaches the ESP, not only the source file in a browser.
- Send test messages. Check Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, and at least one phone. Verify dark-mode behavior, long subject lines, missing images, links, the unsubscribe control, and the plain-text alternative.
CSS inlining: the easy-to-miss sending difference
The leemunroe/responsive-html-email-template repository includes email.html and email-inlined.html and is licensed under MIT. Its documentation says to inline CSS before sending through API services such as Mailgun, SendGrid, or Postmark. Source: GitHub repository.
The documented workflow is:
- Copy all of the repository’s email.html file.
- Paste it into a CSS inliner.
- Copy the generated HTML into your sending service or application.
When using a marketing platform such as Mailchimp, the repository says email.html may be used as-is because Mailchimp can inline CSS during campaign construction. Do not assume that behavior for an arbitrary API integration. If your service does not document automatic inlining, produce the inlined version yourself.

Images that do not randomly disappear
Email clients are less forgiving than browsers. Use an absolute HTTPS image URL and include dimensions, alternative text, and border styling. The repository’s example is:

The repository warns that omitting src, alt, width, height, or border can cause inconsistent results. Resize and compress images before uploading them, but do not make the message depend on images: some clients block them by default. Source: GitHub repository.
What “responsive” does and does not guarantee
A responsive label usually means the template contains mobile-oriented CSS and fluid or stacked layout rules. It does not prove every email client will render it identically. Outlook may need client-specific handling; CodedMails documents VML and MSO code for supported Outlook versions. Likewise, a browser preview is not a compatibility test.
A production review should cover:
- desktop Outlook and webmail;
- Gmail and Apple Mail on mobile;
- blocked images and missing alt text;
- dark mode;
- long or translated copy;
- plain-text output;
- tracking and unsubscribe links;
- the final HTML after ESP processing.
The leemunroe repository describes its own template as tested on mobile, desktop, and web clients. That is a claim about that template, not evidence that every template in a directory has the same coverage. Source: GitHub repository.

What is the best free HTML newsletter template source?
For downloadable code with documented Outlook handling and stated commercial-use permission, CodedMails is one option. For direct HTML editing, try Niraj Rajgor’s library. For visual editing and platform exports, consider TOPOL.io or Benchmark Email.

Are free email templates safe for commercial use?
Only when the individual template’s license grants that permission. CodedMails states that commercial and client use is allowed, and the leemunroe template uses the MIT License. Do not assume the same terms for an old directory or an unlicensed download.
Why does a newsletter look fine in a browser but break in email?
Email clients support HTML and CSS unevenly. Outlook may need VML or MSO conditional comments, some clients remove styles, images may be blocked, and an ESP may rewrite markup. Test the final sent message across the clients your subscribers use.
Do HTML newsletters need a plain-text version?
