To change desktop icon size in Windows 11, right-click an empty area of the desktop, select View, and choose Large, Medium, or Small icons. For finer adjustment, hold Ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel while on the desktop. Text size, Display Scale, and Magnifier can help make content easier to see, but they are broader or temporary alternatives—not additional desktop icon-size controls.
Use the View menu for a quick preset or Ctrl and the mouse wheel when you want to adjust the size more precisely. Choose an accessibility or display option when you need more than the desktop icons enlarged.
1. Change desktop icons from the View menu
This is the simplest direct method. Windows 11 offers three desktop icon presets: Small, Medium, and Large. Microsoft does not specify pixel measurements for these presets.
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Point to View.
- Select Large icons, Medium icons, or Small icons.
This changes desktop icon size. Larger icons may be easier to see and click; smaller icons may help fit more icons on screen.

2. Resize desktop icons with Ctrl and the mouse wheel
Use this gesture to adjust desktop icon size rather than choosing one of the three named presets. It requires a mouse with a scroll wheel.
- Click an empty area of the desktop to give it focus.
- Hold down Ctrl.
- Scroll the mouse wheel up to make the icons larger or down to make them smaller.
- Release Ctrl when the icons are the size you want.
If you do not have a mouse with a scroll wheel, use the View menu instead. A scroll-wheel mouse is optional; you do not need to buy one to change icon size.
Other ways to make screen content easier to see
These Windows features can help with visibility, but they do not provide additional controls for changing only desktop icon size.

Increase Text size
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Text size and move the slider to enlarge text. This may help with desktop icon labels, but it is a text enlargement control rather than an icon-size control.

Go to Settings > System > Display > Scale to change the scale of screen content more broadly. Display Scale affects more than desktop icons. Microsoft says custom scaling is possible but does not recommend it.
Use Magnifier temporarily
Press Windows key + Plus to start Magnifier and enlarge part or all of the display while it is active. Press Windows key + Esc to close it. Magnifier changes the active view temporarily; it does not change the desktop icon-size setting.

Settings that do not change icon size
Desktop icon settings controls which standard icons appear, such as This PC, Network, and Recycle Bin. It does not change their size. Do not confuse it with the View menu’s icon-size presets.
Lowering screen resolution is not a simple substitute for changing desktop icon size. Microsoft warns that a resolution below a monitor’s native resolution can make text less sharp and the image small, centered, black-edged, or stretched.

Can I set a desktop icon size between the View presets?
Hold Ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel while on the desktop to adjust icon size rather than selecting one of the three named presets.
Does Text size change the desktop icon graphics?
No. Text size enlarges text and may help with icon labels, but it is separate from the direct controls for changing desktop icon size.
Does Display Scale change only desktop icons?

How do I turn off Magnifier?
