A prompt to log in may reflect regional availability, use of the mobile app instead of the website, or a browser/session issue. Here is how to check access and troubleshoot the login flow.
Can you still use ChatGPT without logging in?
Yes. OpenAI says ChatGPT can be accessed before creating an account. Go to chatgpt.com in a browser, enter a prompt in the message box, and send it.
Account-free access is available only in supported countries. OpenAI says it is not available in Europe except the United Kingdom. If you are in an unsupported region, the site may require you to sign in even when your browser is working normally.

The distinction is important:

Why ChatGPT may be asking you to log in
1. Account-free access is unavailable in your region
OpenAI offers logged-out use in supported countries, rather than everywhere. It says the feature is unavailable in Europe except the United Kingdom. If you are in an unsupported region, clearing cookies or reinstalling the app will not enable account-free use.
2. You are using the app instead of the website
OpenAI’s account-free instructions apply to chatgpt.com in a web browser. They do not document logged-out access in the ChatGPT iOS or Android apps. To test account-free access, open the website in a browser rather than the app.
3. Your logged-out conversation is no longer available
Logged-out chats are not saved to ChatGPT history; they remain accessible only during the current session in the same browser. Clearing cookies, changing browsers or devices, or ending the session can make a conversation disappear.
A logged-out user can have only one conversation at a time. Selecting New Chat starts another and makes the previous logged-out conversation inaccessible. Creating an account may put only the latest logged-out conversation in the sidebar; earlier conversations cannot be saved, and you cannot continue that conversation after logging out.

4. Browser or network settings are interfering
Cookies, including third-party cookies, and JavaScript must be allowed for chatgpt.com, openai.com, and auth.openai.com. Cookie-consent overlays, cookie managers, ad or tracker blockers, other browser extensions, cached data, outdated browsers, VPNs, proxies, and firewalls can interfere with the login flow.
How to use ChatGPT without an account
- Open a browser on a supported desktop or mobile device.
- Go to chatgpt.com.
- If account-free access is available in your region, enter a prompt in the message box and send it.
- Stay in the same browser session if you need to refer to the conversation.
A logged-out chat is not stored in your history. Avoid selecting New Chat until you are finished with the current conversation; starting another makes the first inaccessible.
Can logged-out users use ChatGPT Search?
Yes. OpenAI’s Search documentation includes logged-out Free users. Logging in is not universally required to use ChatGPT Search, though account-free access is still subject to regional availability.
What you lose by not creating an account
Account-free access is useful for a quick, temporary question, but it does not provide account features. Creating an account unlocks:

A free account and logged-out access are different modes. ChatGPT being free does not mean every free feature works without an account, and a login prompt does not prove that OpenAI has ended account-free use.
Check the logged-out data setting
OpenAI says logged-out conversations are used for model training by default. On the web, you can opt out as follows:
- Open
chatgpt.com. - Click the ? icon in the bottom-right corner.
- Disable Improve the model for everyone.
This setting is tied to the browser. It resets if you clear cookies or switch browsers or devices, so check it again if needed.
What to do if logging in is the only option
If account-free access is unavailable in your country or browser, logging in may be the practical solution. If login fails, use the same authentication method you used when creating the account:

Using a different method can create a separate account or produce errors such as Wrong authentication method or There is already a user with email…. If you used Apple’s Hide My Email, the account may be associated with an @privaterelay.appleid.com address; use Continue with Apple.
Fix a broken ChatGPT login page
Try these steps in order:
- Allow cookies, including third-party cookies, and JavaScript for
chatgpt.com,openai.com, andauth.openai.com. - Temporarily disable ad blockers, tracker blockers, privacy extensions, and cookie-management extensions.
- Clear the browser cache and cookies.
- Try another network and turn off your VPN or proxy.
- If OpenAI has temporarily restricted login as suspicious, wait up to one hour before trying again.
- Retry in another browser, on another device, or in a private/incognito window.
If the site works in a private window but not a normal window, an extension, cached cookie, or browser privacy setting may be the cause. Re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the conflict.

ChatGPT has not universally changed to “login required.” OpenAI still supports account-free use at chatgpt.com in supported countries, and logged-out Free users can use ChatGPT Search. The feature is unavailable in Europe except the UK, is documented for the web rather than the mobile apps, and does not retain normal conversation history.
If you are being prompted to log in unexpectedly, check your region and whether you are using the website, then investigate your browser settings, network, and logged-out session.
