You can mirror a Windows PC to an iPad with a third-party display app; Windows does not natively treat an iPad as an AirPlay or Miracast receiver. For a wireless connection, use spacedesk and select desktop duplication; for a USB connection, use Splashtop Wired XDisplay. Microsoft Windows App is for remote access, not for adding the iPad as a second monitor in Windows Display settings.
Choose the right method

For the same image on both screens, use spacedesk or Wired XDisplay and select Duplicate or the relevant mirror setting. Windows App displays a remote session; it does not make the iPad a monitor listed under Settings > System > Display.
Method 1: Mirror Windows to an iPad with spacedesk
spacedesk has two parts:
- spacedesk DRIVER installed on the Windows PC, called the Primary Machine.
- spacedesk VIEWER installed on the iPad, called the Secondary Machine.
The devices communicate over TCP/IP. Supported connections include Wi-Fi through a router, direct Ethernet, USB tethering, and USB-to-Ethernet. spacedesk documents direct Ethernet as its best-performing option and Wi-Fi through a router, switch, or hub as its least-performing option.
Install spacedesk
- On the Windows PC, download and install the spacedesk DRIVER from the official spacedesk manual.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- On the iPad, install spacedesk VIEWER from the Apple App Store.
- Connect the PC and iPad to a local TCP/IP network that allows them to communicate.
- Open spacedesk VIEWER on the iPad.
- Select the Windows PC when it appears in the available computers list.
Change the connection from extension to mirroring
spacedesk supports both an extended desktop and a duplicated desktop. If the iPad shows a separate portion of the Windows desktop, Windows is using extension mode.

- On Windows, press Windows key + P.
- Select Duplicate.
- If the spacedesk controls expose the display mode, choose Desktop Duplication (mirror) rather than Desktop Extension.
You can also open Settings > System > Display, select the iPad-related display, and choose Duplicate these displays in the multiple-display setting.
Fix a spacedesk PC that does not appear
Check these items in order:
- Confirm that both devices are on the same reachable network.
- Move the iPad off a guest network if it blocks device-to-device traffic.
- Check for wireless client isolation, VLAN separation, or access-point rules that prevent the iPad from reaching the PC.
- Check Windows Firewall and third-party security software for rules blocking spacedesk traffic.
- Try a different connection, such as direct Ethernet or a USB-to-Ethernet adapter.
If spacedesk connects but the picture is delayed, reduce resolution or frame rate in spacedesk settings and try a stronger network connection. Motion and video can make network latency more noticeable than static documents.
Method 2: Use Splashtop Wired XDisplay over USB
Wired XDisplay uses the Wired XDisplay iPad app, the Windows XDisplay Agent, a compatible USB cable, and current iTunes on the Windows PC.
Set up Wired XDisplay
- Install the latest version of iTunes on Windows.
- Install XDisplay Agent for PC from Splashtop.
- Install Wired XDisplay on the iPad.
- Connect the iPad to the PC with a USB cable.
- Unlock the iPad and approve any trust or connection prompt.
- Open iTunes and confirm that it detects the iPad.
- Open Wired XDisplay on the iPad and XDisplay Agent on Windows.
- Press Windows key + P and choose Extend displays while testing the connection.
To mirror rather than extend, open the XDisplay application settings and use Advanced > Enable mirror mode. Splashtop’s troubleshooting instructions say to leave Enable mirror mode unticked when the intended result is extension.

If iTunes sees the iPad but XDisplay does not work
iTunes detection alone does not prove that the XDisplay virtual display driver is installed or that Windows has selected the intended display mode. Splashtop identifies the Virtual Display Driver as a required component. If necessary, manually install it from the Agent’s Drive folder:

If the agent opens but the iPad remains blank or Windows does not expose a usable display, try Splashtop’s documented compatibility setting:
- Open C:\Program Files (x86)\Splashtop\Splashtop Wired XDisplay\Agent.
- Right-click SWXDAgent.exe and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Enable Run this program in compatibility mode for:.
- Select Windows 7, apply the change, and restart the agent.
Also test another cable and USB port. A cable or driver problem can prevent the display connection even when the iPad is detected.
Method 3: View the PC through Windows App
Microsoft’s current iPad client is called Windows App. Older guides may call it Microsoft Remote Desktop, but current Microsoft setup instructions use Windows App.
This method does not create a second Windows monitor. It opens a remote Windows session inside the iPad app. Use it when remote control matters more than duplicating the physical PC screen.

Enable Remote Desktop on Windows
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Under Windows specifications > Edition, check that the PC runs Windows Pro.
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
- Turn on Remote Desktop.
- Select Confirm.
- Record the value shown under PC name.
The remote PC must run a Pro edition. Windows Home can be used as a client, but it cannot host the documented Microsoft Remote Desktop connection.
Connect from the iPad
- Install and open Windows App on the iPad.
- Add a remote PC.
- Enter the Windows computer’s PC name.
- Select the saved PC to start the connection.
If the computer cannot be reached, verify that Remote Desktop is enabled, the PC name is correct, the PC is powered on, and the network permits the connection.

Adjust the iPad image
In Windows App, open Settings using the gear icon or your account picture, then choose Display. You can select a resolution and enable Use Full Display.
Windows App normally applies letterboxing or pillarboxing to account for the iPad’s rounded corners and gesture areas. Use Full Display removes those borders, but content near rounded corners or iPadOS gesture areas may become obscured. See Microsoft’s Windows App display settings.
Why AirPlay and Projecting to this PC do not solve this
AirPlay does not natively turn a Windows PC into an iPad display source. A third-party display or remote-access application is needed for a Windows-to-iPad workflow.

Windows’ Projecting to this PC feature works in the opposite direction: it lets a wireless display project to a Windows PC. It does not make an iPad a native Miracast receiver for Windows. See Microsoft’s screen mirroring and projecting guidance.
Troubleshooting checklist

Which option should you use?
- Choose spacedesk for a network-based mirror or second display.
- Choose Wired XDisplay when a USB connection is preferable or Wi-Fi performance is unreliable.
- Choose Windows App when you need remote access rather than a duplicated display.
For static desktop viewing or reading documents, spacedesk can be a convenient starting point. For more responsive interaction, use a connection that performs well on your network or a wired setup; neither network mirroring nor a virtual display is guaranteed to match a physical monitor.

Can I mirror a Windows PC to an iPad without installing software?

Why does spacedesk extend the desktop instead of mirroring it?
spacedesk supports both modes, and Windows may be set to extension. Press Windows key + P and select Duplicate, or choose Desktop Duplication (mirror) in the relevant display controls.
Does Windows App turn the iPad into a second monitor?
No. Windows App presents a remote Windows session inside the iPad app. It is not a virtual display that appears in Windows Settings > System > Display.
Can Windows Home host a Windows App remote connection?
No. Microsoft requires the remote PC to run Windows Pro. A Windows Home computer can act as a client, but not as the documented Remote Desktop host.
Is Windows 10 still supported?
No. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. See its Remote Desktop guidance.
The Bottom Line
For a true PC-to-iPad mirror, start with spacedesk: install its Windows driver and iPad viewer, connect both devices to a reachable local network, and choose Duplicate. Use Wired XDisplay for a USB-based setup. Use Windows App only when you want remote access, because it displays a remote session rather than creating a second Windows monitor.
