The way to make F1–F12 act as standard function keys or as media and action keys depends on your keyboard and computer model. Start with the keyboard’s Fn Lock marking or documented shortcut; if that is unavailable, check the manufacturer’s utility or BIOS/UEFI settings.
First, decide what “Fn Lock” should do
The phrase Fn Lock is used for two opposite preferences:

For example, if you want to refresh a browser with F5 without holding Fn, use standard function-key mode. If you want to change volume by pressing the top-row key directly, use action-key mode.
Check the keyboard and try its documented shortcut
- Look for “Fn Lock,” “FnLk,” or a lock icon printed on a key. Check the keyboard manual for the supported toggle combination.
- On supported Lenovo systems, press
Fn+Escto enable Fn Lock and disable hotkey functionality; press it again to reverse the setting. Lenovo’s guidance does not make this a universal shortcut. - On the Microsoft All in One Media Keyboard, press
Fn+Caps Lockto enable Fn Lock. This applies to that keyboard, not to Windows generally. - Test a key with a clear alternate action, such as volume or brightness, and an application shortcut that expects a standard F key.
Change the setting in BIOS or UEFI
If your keyboard does not have a supported toggle, check the computer manufacturer’s instructions for BIOS/UEFI settings. On supported models, look for a setting such as Action Keys Mode, Hotkey Mode, or function-key behavior. The setting name, available options, and startup key differ by manufacturer and model.

HP documents changing Action Keys Mode in BIOS Setup Utility for many notebooks. Follow the instructions for your exact HP model; do not assume that its procedure or BIOS entry key applies to other computers. ASUS likewise provides its own model-specific BIOS instructions, which do not establish a universal Fn Lock procedure.
Check the manufacturer’s utility
Some manufacturers provide a Windows utility for changing function-row behavior on supported models. Lenovo’s support guidance points applicable users to Lenovo Vantage settings. Other makers may use different utilities, and a tool or setting for one brand should not be assumed to apply to another.
Search the Start menu for your computer manufacturer’s utility or consult the support page for the exact model. Windows Settings does not provide a universal Fn Lock control.

External USB and Bluetooth keyboards
A computer’s BIOS setting may not control an unrelated USB or Bluetooth keyboard. For an external keyboard, check its Fn Lock marking, manual, manufacturer software, or documented hardware switch. Shortcuts are keyboard-specific, so use the instructions for that exact model.

Not every keyboard or computer provides a configurable Fn mode. If the documented shortcut, manufacturer utility, and BIOS/UEFI settings offer no option, the default behavior may not be changeable on that model.
Test more than one key and use the symbols printed on your keyboard as a guide to its alternate actions. If the behavior still seems faulty, consult the manufacturer’s model-specific support information.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Identify the keyboard and exact computer model you are using.
- Decide whether standard F1–F12 commands or the printed actions should work without Fn.
- Check for an Fn Lock marking and follow the keyboard manual’s toggle instructions.
- Use a documented shortcut only if it applies to your model, such as Lenovo’s
Fn+Escon supported systems or Microsoft’sFn+Caps Lockon the All in One Media Keyboard. - Check your manufacturer’s utility and BIOS/UEFI instructions for a function-row setting.
- Test both an alternate key action and a standard F-key command. If no setting is available, the behavior may not be configurable.

FAQ
Is there an Fn Lock setting in Windows 11 or Windows 10 Settings?
No universal Fn Lock switch is established in Windows Settings. The available control depends on the keyboard and computer; check the manufacturer’s documented shortcut, utility, or BIOS/UEFI settings.
Does Fn + Esc work on every laptop?
No. Lenovo documents Fn + Esc for supported systems. Other keyboards may use a different shortcut or offer no toggle.

How do I enable Fn Lock on the Microsoft All in One Media Keyboard?
Microsoft documents pressing Fn and Caps Lock at the same time. This instruction is specific to that keyboard.
Can BIOS or UEFI change which keys work without Fn?
On supported models, a BIOS/UEFI setting such as Action Keys Mode or Hotkey Mode can change the default function-row behavior. Names, options, and BIOS entry instructions vary by model.
Does Lenovo Vantage apply to non-Lenovo computers?
No. Lenovo’s guidance points users of applicable Lenovo systems to Lenovo Vantage. Check the utility and instructions provided for your own manufacturer and model.

Will my laptop’s BIOS setting control an external Bluetooth keyboard?
Do not assume it will. Check the external keyboard’s own Fn Lock marking, manual, or manufacturer software for its control method.
