To set up and test a microphone in Windows 11 or Windows 10, connect it, open Settings > System > Sound, select it under Input, and run the built-in test. If the test fails, check the connection or Bluetooth pairing, mute controls, app permissions, and input volume before moving on to Windows troubleshooting or audio drivers.
A successful Windows test confirms that the system can receive and play back a sample from the selected microphone. If an app still cannot use it, check that app’s microphone selection and permissions.
Connect and select a microphone
- Connect the microphone to your PC. For a Bluetooth microphone, pair and connect it; if it does not appear in the input list, select Add device and follow the prompts.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Look under Input for the connected microphone and select it.
Test a microphone in Windows 11 or Windows 10
- Under Input, select the microphone you want to test and open its properties using the control beside the device.
- Under Input settings, select Start test and speak normally.
- Select Stop test, then select Play to hear the recorded sample.
- If the sample is too quiet, raise Input volume and test again.
If the sample plays clearly, Windows is receiving audio from the selected input. A device appearing in the list alone does not confirm that the intended microphone is selected or that a particular app can access it.
What to check if the microphone test fails
| Where the problem occurs | What to check |
|---|---|
| Connection or pairing | Reconnect the microphone. For Bluetooth, confirm it is paired and connected. Check the microphone or headset mute button. |
| Windows input selection and test | Select the intended microphone under Input, run the test again, and check its placement and connection. |
| App access | Check Windows microphone privacy settings and the app’s own microphone selection. |
| Low input level | Raise Input volume and repeat the recorded-sample test. |
| Windows still does not detect or use the microphone | Run the Windows audio troubleshooter. If the issue remains, check or update the audio driver using Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance. |
Allow apps to access the microphone
Windows device detection and app permission are separate checks. If Windows can test the microphone but an app cannot use it, review microphone access settings.

If connection, selection, permissions, and input volume do not resolve the problem, run the Windows audio troubleshooter. The available troubleshooting interface can vary by Windows version.
