Soft focus in Microsoft Teams smooths your face in your outgoing camera feed; it does not improve meeting organization or team productivity directly. The setting is available in supported desktop Teams clients, but Microsoft lists it as unavailable in Teams for Web. It is separate from background blur, which affects the area behind you.
Before a meeting, open Open device settings on the pre-join screen and turn on Soft focus under Video Settings. In Teams Free for desktop, you can also turn it on during a meeting or from device settings outside a meeting.
What Soft focus changes—and what it does not
Soft focus applies a smoothing effect to your facial appearance in your outgoing camera image. Microsoft describes it as an AI-assisted video-quality feature, with audio and video enhancement processing performed locally in Teams rather than leaving the call for processing.
It does not change other participants’ video, remove your background, improve camera resolution, correct poor framing, or replace background blur. Its contribution to collaboration is indirect: it can make your video appearance look more polished, but it does not add collaboration tools or improve workflow.

Troubleshooting
Soft focus is missing in Teams for Web
This is expected under Microsoft’s current feature matrix. Soft focus is listed among the video filters unavailable on Teams for Web. Use the Teams desktop app instead; switching browsers is not a documented way to add the feature.
The option is missing in the desktop app
- Confirm you are using the Teams desktop app rather than Teams in a browser.
- Turn on the camera before opening video settings.
- From the pre-join screen, select Open device settings; outside a meeting, check Settings > Devices.
- Install the latest Teams client update.
- If you use a work or school account, check whether your organization restricts video effects or manages camera features through policy.
- Try another camera if the selected camera does not expose the required processing capability.
Microsoft does not publish a universal hardware list for Soft focus, so availability on every webcam, computer, or account type is not guaranteed.
The option appears only after joining
Teams exposes video controls in different places depending on the client and meeting state. Before joining, try Open device settings. In Teams Free desktop during a meeting, select More > Video effects and settings.
You are looking for background blur
Soft focus smooths your face; background blur obscures the area behind you while keeping you in the foreground. Use Effects and avatars before joining, or More actions > Video effects and settings > Video effects during a meeting, then choose a background option.

Soft focus versus custom filters
Teams also has a separate custom video-filter feature for styles such as color treatments and frames. That feature can prompt you to add an app and provide consent the first time you use a filter. This installation and consent flow is separate from the native Soft focus control in camera settings.
If you select Preview for a custom filter while your camera is on, Teams temporarily turns the camera off. Select Apply and turn on video to resume sharing your camera with the filter. This behavior applies to custom filters, not the ordinary Soft focus toggle.

Why is Soft focus missing in the desktop app?
Make sure you are using the desktop client and have turned on the camera. Check the pre-join device settings or Settings > Devices, update Teams, and check whether organizational policy or the selected camera affects availability.

No separate app installation is documented for the native Soft focus toggle. App installation and consent can apply to Teams’ separate custom video-filter feature.
The Bottom Line
Soft focus is a camera setting that smooths your own video image; it is not a direct collaboration-efficiency feature. On desktop Teams, look under Open device settings > Video Settings before joining. In Teams Free desktop, use More > Video effects and settings > Settings during a meeting, or Settings > Devices > Video settings outside one. It is unavailable in Teams for Web according to Microsoft’s current feature table. To hide your room, choose background blur instead.
