High ping on a PC is often caused by the connection between the computer and router, not by Windows being “slow.” Test the ping to your default gateway first: if it is unstable, focus on Wi‑Fi or the local network; if it is stable but game ping is high, investigate the ISP connection, routing, congestion, or game server.

These nine solutions help isolate and address common causes, from Wi‑Fi interference and adapter issues to Windows network configuration. No setting can guarantee lower game latency when the delay is outside your home network.

First, identify where the ping is coming from

Test the local connection before changing DNS or resetting Windows. Open Search, type Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and choose Yes. Run ipconfig, then find Default Gateway under the active Wi‑Fi adapter. It may look like 192.168.1.1.

Run ping 192.168.1.1, replacing the example address with the gateway shown on your PC. A stable response means the PC can reach the router reliably. If a game still reports high ping, delay may be farther upstream: the modem, ISP, Internet route, server location, congestion, or game server.

Result Likely area to investigate
Gateway ping is high, inconsistent, or times out over Wi‑Fi Wi‑Fi signal, interference, router, wireless adapter, or driver
Gateway ping is stable, but game ping is high ISP connection, routing, server distance, congestion, or game server
Ethernet is stable but Wi‑Fi is not Wireless path rather than the ISP connection

1. Test with an Ethernet cable

Connect the PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, then repeat the game or gateway-ping test. This is a quick way to distinguish a Wi‑Fi problem from a broader Internet problem.

If Ethernet produces normal latency while Wi‑Fi gives you spikes or packet loss, focus on the router’s wireless settings, interference, frequency band, adapter, and driver. The ISP connection may be working normally. Microsoft recommends testing a direct Ethernet connection when a PC cannot reliably ping the Wi‑Fi router.

Ethernet avoids wireless interference and fluctuating signal strength. If running a cable is not practical, continue with the wireless fixes below.

2. Try the other Wi‑Fi frequency band

Many routers provide separate networks for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Test both rather than assuming that 5 GHz is always better.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the Network icon on the Windows taskbar.
  2. Choose the other available Wi‑Fi network.
  3. Select Connect and enter the wireless password if prompted.
  4. Run the gateway ping again and compare results from the same location and under the same workload.

5 GHz can offer better throughput and may have less congestion, but its signal does not travel through walls as effectively as 2.4 GHz. A distant PC may get a more stable connection on 2.4 GHz. Distance, obstructions, nearby networks, interference, and adapter support all affect the result.

If one band does not appear, check whether the adapter supports it:

  1. Open Search, type Device Manager, and open it.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Right-click the wireless adapter and select Properties.
  4. Open the Advanced tab.
  5. Look for Wireless Mode or Band, and make sure the setting permits the frequency used by your router.

3. Disable Wi‑Fi adapter power saving

Windows can turn off a wireless adapter to save power. On some systems, that can cause intermittent disconnects or latency spikes when the adapter enters or leaves a power-saving state. This setting is worth testing if ping is normally stable but jumps periodically.

  1. Open Search, type Device Manager, and select it.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Right-click the Wi‑Fi adapter and select Properties.
  4. Open the Power Management tab.
  5. Clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  6. Select OK, then test the connection again.

This does not guarantee a lower baseline Internet ping. It prevents one type of local power-management interruption, so it is most relevant to recurring spikes and disconnects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Change the router’s wireless channel

Nearby routers, cordless devices, Bluetooth equipment, and other sources can compete for wireless airtime. Changing the router’s channel may reduce interference and stabilize the local ping.

Change channel settings in the router’s administrator page, not in Windows. The address and menu names vary by manufacturer and model. Look for sections such as Wireless, Wi‑Fi, Advanced wireless, or Radio settings.

  1. Open the router’s administrator page using the address and credentials supplied by the manufacturer or ISP.
  2. Open the wireless settings for the affected band.
  3. Find the Channel setting.
  4. Test a less congested available channel and save the change.
  5. Reconnect the PC and compare gateway-ping results.

There is no universally fastest channel. The best choice depends on nearby networks and local interference. If the router offers automatic channel selection, compare its result with a manually selected channel rather than treating either choice as automatically optimal.

5. Reset the Windows network stack

Corrupted Winsock or TCP/IP settings can cause connection problems. Windows provides a supported reset sequence that also renews the DHCP configuration and clears the DNS resolver cache.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Search, type Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator, then choose Yes.
  2. Run these commands in order: netsh winsock reset, netsh int ip reset, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, and ipconfig /flushdns.
  3. Restart Windows after the commands finish, especially after the Winsock and TCP/IP resets.

The commands do different jobs:

Command Purpose
netsh winsock reset Resets the Winsock catalog used by network applications.
netsh int ip reset Resets TCP/IP configuration.
ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew Release and request a DHCP address again.
ipconfig /flushdns Clears the local DNS resolver cache.

Connectivity will briefly stop while the commands run. Do not use /release and /renew as the normal procedure for a manually configured static IP address; those commands are intended for adapters using automatic DHCP.

6. Change DNS only if name resolution is the problem

DNS translates a domain name into an IP address. It can affect how quickly a game launcher or website finds a server, but it normally does not lower the ongoing round-trip time after the game has connected to its server.

Windows 11 keeps DNS settings in the network profile:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Network & internet.
  2. For Wi‑Fi, select Wi‑Fi > Manage known networks, then select the network. For Ethernet, select Ethernet, then the connected network.
  3. Next to IP assignment, select Edit.
  4. Under Edit IP settings, select Manual.
  5. Turn on IPv4.
  6. Enter values in Preferred DNS and Alternate DNS, then select Save.

For ordinary home networks, Microsoft recommends Automatic (DHCP). If you change DNS, record the original setting so you can restore it if lookup or other connectivity problems appear. Windows 11 also provides DNS over HTTPS options, including Off, On (automatic template), and On (manual template), along with a fallback-to-plaintext option when DNS over HTTPS is enabled. DNS over HTTPS is not available in Windows 10 through these settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Flushing DNS is useful for stale or failed name resolution; it is not a general-purpose gaming-ping optimizer. Switching to a public DNS provider does not guarantee lower game latency.

7. Update or reinstall the network adapter driver

A driver problem is more likely when latency or disconnects began after a Windows update, driver update, or hardware change. First check the installed driver:

  1. Open Search > Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Right-click the Wi‑Fi or Ethernet adapter and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Note the Driver Version and Driver Date.

Check the PC, motherboard, or adapter manufacturer’s support page for a newer driver. If you plan to reinstall the current driver, download a suitable driver first as a backup, particularly if the PC might be offline afterward.

  1. In Device Manager > Network adapters, right-click the affected adapter.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device, if the option appears.
  4. Select Uninstall.
  5. Restart the PC.

Microsoft says Windows will look for and reinstall the network adapter after the restart. If the adapter disappears from Device Manager, Windows is not detecting it; install the manufacturer’s driver manually and check the adapter’s physical connection or hardware status.

8. Use Network reset as a last resort

Network reset is more disruptive than the command-line reset above. It removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters with default settings. It can help after an upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11, but it is not a routine way to reduce ping.

  • Game accelerator; provides an uninterrupted WiFi connection for immersive gaming experiences

In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. Select Reset now > Yes, then wait for Windows to restart.

Before using it, note these consequences:

  • VPN software may need to be reinstalled or configured again.
  • Hyper‑V virtual switches and other virtual networking may need to be rebuilt.
  • Known networks may be changed to the Public network profile.
  • The Public profile makes the PC undiscoverable to other devices and may affect file or printer sharing.
  • Custom adapter settings will be removed.

Use this option only after testing Ethernet, Wi‑Fi bands, adapter settings, drivers, and the supported network-stack reset.

9. Check whether the game server or ISP is responsible

If the default-gateway ping is stable on both Wi‑Fi and Ethernet, but the game still shows high latency, changing Windows settings may not help. The remaining delay can be introduced after traffic leaves the router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the game’s server or region selector and choose a geographically closer region when the game allows it. Also test at different times. A connection that is fine at one time but poor at another may be experiencing congestion at the ISP or elsewhere in the route.

Do not confuse high ping with low frame rate. Ping is network round-trip time; frame rate depends mainly on the PC’s processor, graphics hardware, game settings, and display. Packet loss, rubber-banding, and sudden ping spikes point to a connection problem, while consistently low FPS points to rendering or system performance.

What not to change blindly

Several commonly copied “ping fixes” can create new problems without addressing the cause:

  • Do not disable IPv6 as a general fix. Current Microsoft networking guidance does not recommend doing this to reduce ping, and some networks and services use IPv6.
  • Do not apply random TCP autotuning, RSS, or netsh tweaks. The supported Windows troubleshooting sequence is the five-command reset listed above; undocumented latency recipes can make troubleshooting harder.
  • Do not assume the fastest download speed means the lowest ping. Latency depends on distance, routing, queueing, and network conditions.
  • Do not judge a fix from one game match. Repeat the gateway test and compare across matches or time periods.

FAQ

What is a good ping for PC gaming?

There is no single cutoff for every game. The practical goal is a stable connection to the selected server; server location and the game’s netcode also affect how responsive play feels.

Will flushing DNS lower my gaming ping?

Usually not. ipconfig /flushdns clears cached DNS records and can fix stale or failed name resolution. Once a game is connected to its server, DNS normally is not involved in each gameplay packet.

Is 5 GHz Wi‑Fi better for gaming than 2.4 GHz?

Not in every location. 5 GHz may have less congestion and higher throughput, but its range through walls is shorter. Test both bands from the PC’s usual location and compare gateway latency and packet loss.

Should I disable IPv6 to reduce ping?

No. Disabling IPv6 is not a general Microsoft-recommended ping fix and may cause compatibility problems. Test the local connection and investigate the router, adapter, driver, ISP, or game server instead.

Why is my game ping high when my Internet speed is good?

Download speed and latency measure different things. A fast connection can still use a congested Wi‑Fi channel, connect to a distant game server, or follow an inefficient ISP route. A stable ping to the default gateway helps show whether the problem starts inside your home.

Does Windows Network reset delete my files?

It does not normally delete personal files, but it removes network adapters and their settings. VPN software, Hyper‑V virtual switches, custom adapter settings, and file-sharing profiles may need to be restored afterward.

The Bottom Line

The most useful first test is Ethernet versus Wi‑Fi, followed by a ping to the router’s Default Gateway. If the gateway is unstable, work through the Wi‑Fi band, channel, power-saving, and driver fixes. If the gateway is stable but the game server remains slow, look at server region, ISP congestion, and routing rather than repeatedly changing DNS. Save Network reset for the end because it removes network configuration instead of simply optimizing it.
