If Dell.TechHub.Instrumentation.SubAgent.exe or Dell.TechHub.DataManager.SubAgent.exe is using an unusual amount of CPU or RAM, first check whether the activity is happening during a SupportAssist scan or continuing after the scan ends. Dell says diagnostic tests can temporarily increase processor and memory use, but persistent growth after testing calls for further investigation.
The process names matter. Dell documents a Performance Counter repair for Dell.Genoa.Agent.exe and Dell.Genoa.UserProcess.exe in an older Dell Insights and SupportAssist for Business issue. That procedure is not automatically the right fix for newer Dell.TechHub.* processes.
Which Dell process is causing the load?
Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Processes, and sort by CPU or Memory. Expand Dell-related entries where necessary and note the exact executable name.

1. Establish whether the usage is temporary
Dell says SupportAssist diagnostic tests can temporarily increase CPU and memory use and make a computer slow or unresponsive until testing completes. A high reading during a test alone does not demonstrate a memory leak.
- In Task Manager, record the process name, CPU percentage, memory use, and uptime.
- Open SupportAssist and go to Home.
- If a manual hardware scan is running, let it finish before judging the process.
- Record CPU and memory use again 10–15 minutes after the scan ends.
- Restart Windows and check whether the same process begins growing again while no scan is active.
A persistent rise after the scan, repeated slowdowns, or usage that returns after every restart is more useful evidence than a single high CPU reading. Also note which Dell utilities are installed and their versions: SupportAssist, Dell Optimizer, Dell Update, and Dell Command | Update.
2. Update or repair the Dell software involved
Before changing Windows Performance Counters or disabling services, install the current package supplied for the affected Dell utility or computer model. The September 2025 report involving the TechHub processes did not identify a release note that clearly listed excessive CPU or RAM use as a known issue, so do not assume an update has fixed every instance.
If the affected installation is SupportAssist for Business PCs, Dell documents these repair commands. Use the same package type originally used to deploy SupportAssist.
Repair an MSI deployment
Run this command using the path to the folder where you extracted the SupportAssist MSI file:

Repair an EXE deployment
Run this command using the path to the extracted SupportAssist executable:
<path of the folder where you extracted the SupportAssist executable file> repair
Run the appropriate command from an elevated Command Prompt. Restart the PC afterward so SupportAssist services are reloaded. Dell says repair may not work if the SupportAssist registry entries or database were modified after deployment.
Do not use a business-deployment repair command as a generic command for the consumer version of SupportAssist. If you cannot identify the deployment package, use the installed application’s repair option, Dell’s current installer, or your organization’s software-management process.

Some online guides recommend running lodctr /R whenever “Dell Instrumentation” uses high CPU. That is too broad. Dell’s documented procedure is for Dell.Genoa.Agent.exe and Dell.Genoa.UserProcess.exe, Dell Insights, and SupportAssist for Business version 2.1.4 or earlier on Windows 10. Do not present it as a general fix for Dell.TechHub.Instrumentation.SubAgent.exe.
If your process names and installation match Dell’s documented Genoa case, open Command Prompt as administrator. Dell’s procedure includes stopping Dell Insights, rebuilding the counters, resynchronizing WMI, stopping WMI and dependent services, deleting Dell Insights logs, and restarting services.

- Stop the Dell Insights service:
net stop DellInsightsAgent. - Rebuild the counter database:
C:\Windows\system32\lodctr.exe /R. On a 64-bit operating system, Dell also listsC:\Windows\syswow64\lodctr.exe /R. - Resynchronize WMI performance counters:
winmgmt.exe /resyncperf. - Stop WMI and dependent services:
net stop Winmgmt /y. - Delete the Dell Insights logs:
RMDIR /s /q "C:\ProgramData\Dell\Dell Insights\". - Restart the Dell Insights service:
net start DellInsightsAgent. - Dell’s example script rebuilds the counters and resynchronizes WMI again to validate that the performance-counter caches were flushed.
Dell’s example batch script may force-close the Genoa agent if the service will not stop: taskkill /im Dell.Genoa.Agent.exe /f. That command targets the Genoa process family. Do not substitute Dell.TechHub.Instrumentation.SubAgent.exe unless there is a separate, documented reason to terminate it.
Services that may need manual restarting
net stop Winmgmt /y can stop other services, including Virtual Machine Management, Configuration Manager/SCCM, and IP Helper. Dell’s example explicitly restarts these services:
net start Winmgmtnet start vmmsnet start CcmExecnet start iphlpsvc
Some commands can report an error because a service is not installed, is configured differently, or was already stopped. On a managed computer, check with your administrator before stopping WMI or SCCM-related services.
4. Do not confuse other Dell issues with TechHub CPU usage
serviceshell.exe high memory
ControlUp reported a separate high-memory issue involving serviceshell.exe on systems running SupportAssist 5.7 and related Dell management/update software. Its reported remediation is SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin version 5.5.16.2, A00.

That report concerns excessive memory consumption by serviceshell.exe. It does not establish that the plugin fixes Dell.TechHub.Instrumentation.SubAgent.exe CPU usage. Verify the executable before applying that remediation.
SupportAssist Remediation crashes and blue screens
A separate report describes crashes involving Dell SupportAssist Remediation. Its reported workaround is to run this from an elevated Command Prompt:
sc.exe config "Dell SupportAssist Remediation" start= disabled
Restart Windows afterward. This is a workaround for the reported crash condition, not a validated general-purpose fix for high Dell Instrumentation CPU usage. Disabling the service can remove part of SupportAssist’s remediation functionality, so use it only when the crash problem matches your system.

- Exact process name, CPU percentage, memory use, and how quickly memory grows.
- Windows edition, version, and build.
- Dell computer model and BIOS version.
- SupportAssist, Dell Optimizer, Dell Update, and Dell Command | Update versions.
- Whether the problem starts during a manual or scheduled scan.
- Whether it continues after the scan and after a restart.
- Task Manager screenshots or a short Performance Monitor log.
- Recent application, System, and Dell-related event log entries.
For a simple history, open Performance Monitor by pressing Win+R, entering perfmon, and adding processor and private-bytes counters for the affected process if available. On a business-managed PC, provide the results to IT rather than uninstalling shared Dell components yourself.
What not to do
- Do not assume every Dell process called “Instrumentation” is the documented Genoa problem.
- Do not rebuild Performance Counters solely because a TechHub process is busy.
- Do not judge a leak while a SupportAssist diagnostic scan is still running.
- Do not delete Dell folders or registry entries as a first response.
- Do not disable every Dell service at once; that removes evidence needed to identify the responsible component.
- Do not confuse an update-related
serviceshell.exememory report with a TechHub instrumentation CPU diagnosis.
FAQ
Is Dell Instrumentation malware?
The process names discussed here are associated with Dell software components, but the name alone does not prove authenticity. In Task Manager, right-click the process, choose Open file location, and inspect its digital signature and installation path. Run a security scan if the file is unsigned, located in an unexpected directory, or has a suspicious publisher.
Why does Dell Instrumentation use high CPU during a SupportAssist scan?
Dell says diagnostic tests temporarily increase CPU and memory use. Wait for the scan to finish and check whether usage falls afterward. Continued growth after the scan is more consistent with a fault than a normal scan workload.
Will lodctr /R fix Dell.TechHub.Instrumentation.SubAgent.exe?
It is not established as a general fix. Dell documents the counter-rebuild procedure for Dell.Genoa.Agent.exe and Dell.Genoa.UserProcess.exe in Dell Insights/SupportAssist for Business 2.1.4 and earlier on Windows 10. Match the process name and product version before using it.

Uninstalling SupportAssist may remove one source of the component, but related Dell utilities can share instrumentation services. It may also remove diagnostics, support alerts, or remediation features. Identify the owning application first, and check with IT on managed devices.
What should I do if the process returns after repair?
Record the exact executable, Dell software versions, scan state, and memory trend. Then update or reinstall the specific Dell utility using Dell’s current package for your model, or send the evidence to Dell Support or your organization’s IT team. Avoid applying unrelated service-disable workarounds.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: identify the executable before choosing a fix. High usage during a SupportAssist diagnostic scan can be normal, while persistent growth afterward deserves investigation. The newer Dell.TechHub.* reports do not automatically justify Dell’s older Performance Counter repair. That procedure is specifically documented for the Genoa processes, Dell Insights, and an older SupportAssist for Business configuration. Repair or update the matching Dell component, preserve diagnostic evidence, and use service-disabling commands only for the separate failure they were designed to address.
