“Error Performing Query” is a generic Facebook request or loading failure; the message alone does not identify its cause or mean your account was hacked or banned. To fix it, find out whether the failure is limited to one action, the app or browser, one device, or one network, then try the least disruptive remedy for that layer.
How do I fix error performing query on Facebook? Start by refreshing once, then compare the same action in the app and a browser and, if possible, on another device and network. Stop repeating a submission that might have gone through even though Facebook displayed an error.
1. Refresh and retry once
Reload the affected Facebook page or close and reopen the app, then try the action once. If an old Marketplace link fails, search for the item again and open its current listing; it may have been removed, sold, or changed.
Do not repeatedly press “Post,” “Send,” or “Submit.” Facebook may process a request even when the page reports an error, causing duplicate posts or messages.

2. Check whether other sites load
Open another website using the same device and network. If other sites also fail, troubleshoot the internet connection before changing Facebook settings. Google Chrome Help advises: “If the issue affects multiple websites, check your internet connection.”
If other sites work, continue by comparing Facebook across interfaces, devices, and networks. A working Feed does not guarantee that every Facebook action can complete.
3. Compare the Facebook app and a browser
Try the same failing feature in a browser if it fails in the app, or in the app if it fails in a browser. On a computer, you can also test Facebook in a private or incognito window.

4. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data
- If you are on Wi-Fi, turn it off and test Facebook on mobile data.
- If you are on mobile data, try a trusted Wi-Fi network.
- If the action works on only one connection, check the failing network’s VPN, proxy, DNS filtering, firewall, or other traffic-filtering settings.
Temporarily testing without a VPN or filter can help isolate the cause. Restore your protection afterward and adjust its settings or contact the network administrator if the network is responsible.

5. Reopen Facebook, restart your device, and update the app
If the app seems to be the failing layer, fully close and reopen it. Restart the device, check that you have a working connection, and install any available Facebook app and device updates. App-store and system-update menu names vary by device and software version.
If the app still fails but Facebook works in a browser, continue with the app-specific steps below. An app-only error may point to local software or session state; it does not establish the cause by itself.
6. Clear Facebook site data selectively
If Facebook fails only in a browser, first try a private window and temporarily disable extensions one at a time. Ad blockers, script blockers, privacy add-ons, and security extensions may interfere with a site’s requests.
If needed, clear Facebook’s site data or cookies in the browser settings, then reload Facebook and sign in again. Clearing site data can sign you out. Consult your browser’s help for the current controls, which vary between browsers and versions.

7. Test extensions and privacy tools
If Facebook works in a private window but not a regular one, an extension or browser setting may be involved. Temporarily disable extensions one at a time and retry the same action to identify a possible conflict.
You can also test whether a VPN, proxy, private DNS, or web-filtering tool is involved by temporarily turning it off. Restore protection after testing. If the error persists without those tools, continue checking the app, feature, and account rather than assuming the filter is responsible.
8. Clear app cache only where your device offers it
Android
Some Android devices provide a control to clear temporary app cache. Open the device’s settings, find Facebook in the app list, and look for a storage or cache option. Menu names differ by manufacturer and Android version. Avoid clearing app storage unless you are prepared to sign in again.
iPhone and iPad
iOS does not provide a universal Facebook app cache button. If reopening, restarting, and updating do not help, reinstalling the app may be a later troubleshooting option. Before removing it, make sure you can sign back in and access any account recovery method you need.

9. Check the specific feature and account notices
If only one action fails, check whether its content is still available and whether you can use that feature. A search result may be private, deleted, blocked, or otherwise unavailable. A Marketplace listing may have changed or disappeared. A post or message may also be affected by a feature-specific restriction or account notice.
Test another item, post, group, or recipient when appropriate. Clearing a cache cannot restore content that has been deleted, made private, or restricted. The query error alone does not prove that your account is banned or compromised.

If the same failure survives tests across browsers, devices, and networks, report it through Facebook’s in-product Help & Support route. Menu labels and paths can vary, so use the help or report option shown in your current interface.
Include the exact error text, the action and feature that failed, your device and operating system, whether you used the app or a browser, the network, approximate time, and results of your cross-tests. Add a screenshot only if it does not expose private information. Do not include passwords or authentication codes.

Why does Facebook say “Error performing query”?
It is a generic request or loading failure and does not identify one specific cause. The problem may involve connectivity, local app or browser state, a feature or account restriction, unavailable content, or Facebook itself.
Does “Error performing query” mean my Facebook account was hacked or banned?
No. The message alone does not establish that your account was hacked or banned. Check for separate signs, such as unfamiliar logins, posts, messages, or account changes, and review any account notices Facebook shows you.
Why does Facebook work until I try to post or send a message?
Loading a page and submitting an action are different requests. A network filter, local session or software issue, action-specific restriction, unavailable destination, or Facebook-side problem may affect the submission while browsing still works.
Should I keep trying after Facebook shows the error?
No. Refresh and retry once. The original request may have gone through despite the error, so repeated submissions can create duplicates.
