You can use Command Prompt to install a Windows 11 product key, start an activation attempt, and check license status—but CMD cannot create a license. Windows 11 needs a valid digital license or 25-character product key, and the installed edition must match that license.
For a key you own, open Command Prompt as an administrator, run slmgr.vbs /ipk YOUR-PRODUCT-KEY, then run slmgr.vbs /ato. KMS and phone activation are only available in the applicable organization or official activation processes.
Check Windows 11 activation status
Open Start > Settings > System > Activation and check Activation status. Microsoft says Windows activation requires a digital license or a 25-character product key. A digital license can be linked to a Microsoft account and may reactivate automatically when you connect to the internet and sign in with the associated account.
After reinstalling Windows, you can select I don’t have a product key during Setup. Windows can activate automatically once online if the device has a matching digital license and you sign in to the associated Microsoft account.

Open Command Prompt as an administrator
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt or cmd.
- Right-click the result and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for confirmation.
Replace XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX in the examples with a product key you own. Do not share your product key in public posts or screenshots.
1. Install or change a product key
Run this command, substituting your 25-character key:
slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Alternatively, use the full script path:
cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

2. Start online activation
After installing a key, run:
slmgr.vbs /ato
Or use:
cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato
This requests an activation attempt; it does not bypass licensing. Retail activation uses an applicable product key or digital license. On volume-licensed systems, the attempt can use an installed MAK or KMS configuration, as applicable. Check that the device is online and that its date and time are correct if activation fails.

3. Check license information in CMD
Use these commands to view license details:

| slmgr.vbs /dli | Basic license information for the active Windows edition. |
| slmgr.vbs /dli all | Basic information for all applicable licensed products. |
| slmgr.vbs /dlv | Detailed license information. |
| slmgr.vbs /dlv all | Detailed information for all applicable products, including Activation IDs. |
| slmgr.vbs /xpr | Activation expiration information; especially useful for KMS clients. |
Retail and MAK activation are generally perpetual and typically do not show a recurring expiration date like KMS activation.
4. Activate a specific product by Activation ID
If multiple products or editions are installed, first find their Activation IDs with:

Then target the relevant product:
slmgr.vbs /ato <Activation-ID>
The Activation ID limits the activation attempt to that product. Microsoft’s Slmgr.vbs documentation describes these options.
5. Use KMS only for an organization’s licensed devices
KMS is for devices covered by valid volume licensing and managed through an organization’s activation infrastructure. Do not point a personal PC at a public or unauthorized KMS server; that is not a legitimate way to activate a retail license.
If your organization administrator provides a KMS host, set it and then attempt activation:
slmgr.vbs /skms kms.example.com:1688
slmgr.vbs /ato
The default KMS TCP port is 1688. Manually setting a host disables KMS autodiscovery. To remove the manual host and restore discovery, run:

slmgr.vbs /ckms
The device also needs the appropriate KMS client configuration and access to the organization’s network. Errors such as 0x8007232B, 0xC004F074, 0xC004F038, and 0x8007007B can indicate an edition/key mismatch or that the device cannot reach the organization’s KMS infrastructure. 6. Official phone or offline activation
If the option is available, Microsoft’s documented Windows 11 route is Start > Settings > System > Activation, then Activate by Phone under Activate Windows Now. Availability can vary by edition.
CMD can display the Installation ID for an official offline activation process:
slmgr.vbs /dti
After the official process provides a Confirmation ID, enter it with:
slmgr.vbs /atp <Confirmation-ID>
/atp uses a Confirmation ID supplied through the official process; it does not generate an ID or create a license. Windows 11 Pro EDU and Windows 11 Pro for Workstations must activate online and cannot use phone activation or SLUI 04, according to Microsoft’s activation error guidance.
7. Remove a product key
To uninstall the key for the current Windows edition, run Command Prompt as administrator and enter:

slmgr.vbs /upk
After a restart, Windows is unlicensed until a new key is installed or a matching digital license is found. Do not run this just to experiment on an activated PC.
To remove the product key from the registry, run:
slmgr.vbs /cpky
This command does not activate Windows. Microsoft documents it as a way to reduce the risk of a key being read by malware.

What /rearm does—and does not do
slmgr.vbs /rearm is not a permanent activation command. Microsoft defines it as resetting activation timers; it is also used with sysprep /generalize. It does not replace a product key or digital license, and it does nothing when the registry value SkipRearm is set to 1.
Likewise, /ato only starts an activation attempt, and a generic KMS client key does not permanently activate a retail installation. For the command definitions, see Microsoft’s Slmgr.vbs options.
Windows edition and product key must match

Common Windows 11 activation errors

If activation fails after a major hardware change, open Start > Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot. The troubleshooter can help reconnect a digital license to changed hardware. Can CMD activate Windows 11 without a product key?
No. CMD can install or use an existing license, but Windows 11 needs a valid digital license or 25-character product key.
What is the CMD command to activate Windows 11?
Run slmgr.vbs /ato in Command Prompt. It starts an activation attempt, which still requires a valid license or key.
Does /rearm permanently activate Windows?
No. Microsoft defines /rearm as resetting activation timers. It does not provide a license or replace a product key.
Can a generic KMS key activate Windows 11 retail?
No. KMS requires the applicable volume license configuration and access to an authorized organization’s KMS host.
Why is my Windows 11 Pro key rejected on Windows 11 Home?
