Enable clipboard history, turn on Clipboard history across your devices in Settings > System > Clipboard, and sign in to each participating PC with the same Microsoft account or work account. Nearby sharing and a Command Prompt command are not required.
Before syncing anything, enable clipboard history with Windows + V. Then turn on cross-device syncing and choose whether to sync copied text automatically or manually.
Turn on clipboard history
- Press Windows + V.
- Select Turn on when Windows displays the clipboard-history prompt.
After it is enabled, pressing Windows + V opens a panel containing recently copied items. You can select an item in that panel to paste it into the active application.
Enable clipboard syncing in Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings. You can also press Windows + I.
- Select System in the left sidebar.
- Select Clipboard.
- Under Clipboard history across your devices, set the switch to On.
Windows 11 does not require a Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Run command for this setup.

Choose how copied text syncs
Once cross-device syncing is on, Windows displays two choices in the same Clipboard history across your devices section:

| Automatically sync text that I copy | Sends copied text to the cloud automatically so it can appear on your other Windows devices using the same account. |
| Manually sync text that I copy | Does not upload every copied item. You choose which individual text item to sync from the clipboard panel. |
For automatic syncing, select Automatically sync text that I copy. This setting refers specifically to text copied on Windows. It should not be treated as automatic synchronization for arbitrary files or every possible clipboard format.
Use manual syncing instead
Manual syncing is useful when you want to keep most copied text on the current PC but choose selected items to sync.
- Copy the text normally.
- Press Windows + V to open clipboard history.
- Find the item you want to sync.
- Select the sync button on that clipboard item.
The item is selected for syncing and may then appear in clipboard history on another Windows device signed in with the same account.

Use the same account on every PC
Clipboard syncing is associated with the signed-in Microsoft account or work account. Sign in with the same account credentials on each Windows 11 PC that should share clipboard content.
If one computer uses a personal Microsoft account and another uses a different personal account or work account, their clipboard histories will not be joined. Enabling the toggle alone does not make unrelated accounts share data.
Paste a synced item on another Windows 11 device
- On the second PC, confirm that clipboard history and Clipboard history across your devices are enabled.
- Copy or select the text for syncing on the first PC, depending on your chosen sync mode.
- On the second PC, press Windows + V.
- If the item appears, select it to paste into the application that currently has focus.
Clipboard syncing is intended for clipboard entries, not for transferring a file from one PC to another.
Important limits and behavior
- Up to 25 entries: Clipboard history holds a maximum of 25 copied entries. As new entries are added, older unpinned entries are removed.
- 4 MB per item: Each clipboard item is limited to 4 MB.
- Supported formats: Microsoft lists text, HTML, and Bitmap clipboard formats.
- Restart behavior: Clipboard history is cleared when the PC restarts, except for items that have been pinned.
- Text-focused syncing: The cross-device controls specifically describe syncing text that you copy. Do not expect automatic syncing of arbitrary files or all clipboard content.
Pin an important clipboard entry if you need it to remain available after a restart. Pinning does not remove the item from the history limit or turn a file into a synchronized clipboard transfer.

Clear clipboard data
To clear clipboard data from Windows 11 and the cloud:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
- Find Clear clipboard data.
- Select Clear.
Microsoft states that this clears clipboard data on the device and in the cloud, except for pinned items.
You can also clear the history from the clipboard panel by pressing Windows + V and selecting Clear all at the top.
Delete only one clipboard item
- Press Windows + V.
- Select See more (…) next to the item.
- Select Delete.
Clipboard syncing is not Nearby sharing
Nearby sharing is a separate Windows feature for sending files, photos, and links to nearby PCs. It is not a prerequisite for Windows clipboard syncing, so you do not need to enable it for this feature.

Likewise, Phone Link’s Cross-device copy and paste option is separate from Windows-to-Windows clipboard history syncing. Phone Link exposes that option under Phone Link > Settings > Features, and Microsoft notes that it is available only when supported. The Windows-to-Windows setup described here uses Settings > System > Clipboard.
If clipboard syncing does not work
- Check clipboard history: Press Windows + V. If Windows offers Turn on, history is still disabled.
- Check the Windows 11 setting: Return to Settings > System > Clipboard and verify that Clipboard history across your devices is on.
- Check the sync mode: With manual syncing selected, an item will not upload merely because it was copied. Open Windows + V and select the item’s sync button.
- Check the account: Confirm that both PCs use the same Microsoft account or work account.
- Check the item: The feature is designed around copied text for cross-device syncing. A large item over 4 MB, a file, or unsupported clipboard content may not behave as expected.
- Check after a restart: Unpinned local history is expected to disappear after a restart. That behavior alone does not prove that synchronization failed.
Microsoft’s current support documentation lists clipboard history and syncing for both Windows 11 and Windows 10. In Windows 11, look for Clipboard history across your devices. Older Windows 10 instructions may use the label Sync across devices, which is different wording for the older settings layout.

Does Windows 11 clipboard syncing require Nearby sharing?

Why did my clipboard history disappear after restarting Windows 11?
Windows clears clipboard history when the PC restarts, except for pinned items. This is expected behavior. Pin entries that need to remain available.
