The original Y2mate.com service is no longer operating. IFPI said the operator agreed to permanently close Y2mate.com and 11 other stream-ripping sites after the services received more than 620 million visits worldwide during the preceding 12 months.
There is no verified, currently operating “official Y2Mate” converter to recommend. Unrelated websites and apps still use the Y2Mate name, but their features, ownership, limits, advertising, and safety cannot be assumed to match the former service.
What happened to Y2Mate?
The original Y2mate.com domain is not a current official YouTube-to-MP3 service. Old bookmarks, tutorials, and shortcuts that send users to the former domain should be treated as obsolete. The commonly repeated instruction to add pp after “youtube” was associated with the former service and is not a reliable method today.
Search results may still show websites named Y2Mate, Y2Mate.ltd, y2mate.nu, y2mate.sbs, or similarly named mobile apps. These should not be treated as replacement versions of one verified product. At least one Google Play listing using the Y2Mate name explicitly says it has no official affiliation with Y2Mate or similar sites.

Why current Y2Mate instructions are inconsistent
There is no authoritative current Y2Mate interface. The buttons and limits described on one domain belong to that domain only.
| Service example | Published behavior | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| y2mate.sbs | Paste a URL into Video URL, select Get Info, choose a format or quality, then select Download. | These labels are specific to that site, not a universal Y2Mate workflow. |
| v2.y2mate.nu | Clicking the .mp3 button switches to MP3; clicking it again switches to MP4. | It says it supports YouTube URLs only. |
| v2.y2mate.nu and v3.y2mate.nu | Published limits of 240 minutes for MP3 and 30 minutes for MP4. | These are domain-specific claims, not universal Y2Mate limits. |
| Y2Mate.ltd | Claims 128, 192, 256, and 320 kbps options and no strict maximum length, while recommending videos shorter than two hours. | Those claims conflict with the limits published by y2mate.nu. |
Typical errors on Y2Mate-branded sites
Even when a lookalike site loads, conversion may fail for reasons that have nothing to do with your browser.
- Private videos: a converter normally cannot access a private video.
- Age-restricted videos: sites may reject content requiring an authenticated YouTube session.
- Livestreams: live or recently live content is commonly unsupported.
- Length restrictions: a site may reject a video that exceeds its MP3 or MP4 limit.
- Unsupported URLs: shortened, playlist, embed, or malformed links may not be accepted.
- Daily limits: v2.y2mate.nu says an IP address may be temporarily blacklisted until access is restored after 24 hours.
- Stalled conversions: v2.y2mate.nu advises clearing the browser cache and refreshing the page, then contacting that site if the issue remains.
Do not repeatedly submit the same link while a conversion is stuck. That may increase rate-limit problems without producing a file.
Watch for fake download buttons and notification requests
Unofficial converter pages often contain several advertising links, redirects, and buttons that resemble the real download control. A button labeled Download is not automatically the generated media file. Do not install an extension, run a downloaded executable, or enter your Google password to convert a video.

Does a 320-kbps MP3 really have 320-kbps quality?
No. A 320-kbps label describes the output file’s nominal encoding rate, not the quality of the original YouTube audio.
Third-party converters obtain an audio stream and may convert it to MP3. If the source has already been compressed, converting it again can add another lossy-encoding step. Increasing the output bitrate cannot restore detail that was absent from the source. A 320-kbps MP3 made from a lower-quality stream is still derived from that lower-quality stream.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe distinction is also visible in YouTube’s own documentation: YouTube accepts 320-kbps MP3 as an upload format when an uncompressed audio file is unavailable. That does not mean YouTube supplies viewers with native 320-kbps MP3 downloads.
Official YouTube options
Download a video you uploaded
If you own the video, YouTube provides an official download path:
Rank #3
- IN THE BOX: 4-foot audio adapter cable with (1) 3.5mm Male connector on one end and (2) Male RCA connectors on the other end
- CLEAR AUDIO: Dual-shielding, polished metal connectors, and a corrosion-resistant gold-plated 3.5mm connector for pure, clear audio and minimal signal loss
- STANDARD AUX JACK: Works with left and right audio input and devices with a standard 3.5mm auxiliary jack (typically used for headphones or ear buds)
- CONNECTS DEVICES: Easily connects devices like a smartphone, tablet, or MP3 player to a speaker, stereo receiver, or other RCA-enabled device
- Open YouTube Studio on a desktop browser.
- Select Content.
- Find the video and open its menu.
- Select Download.
YouTube provides the upload as an MP4, normally in 720p or 360p depending on the video. This is not an MP3 export. You can also use Google Takeout to download all of your uploaded videos.
The download option may be unavailable if the video was removed, has a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, uses a preapproved audio track, or has already been downloaded five times within 24 hours.

Premium subscribers can download eligible videos for offline viewing:
- Sign in to YouTube Premium.
- Open the video’s watch page.
- Select Download.
- Open YouTube → Downloads to watch it offline.
These are controlled offline-playback downloads inside YouTube, not ordinary MP3 files. YouTube says a downloaded video may play offline for up to 29 days before an internet connection is required for verification; some regions use a shorter 48-hour period. YouTube also explicitly says its app does not provide a way to download audio, music, or MP3 files.

“Free for personal use” is not a blanket permission to download a YouTube video. YouTube’s Terms of Service restrict downloading, reproducing, distributing, transmitting, displaying, selling, licensing, altering, or otherwise using content unless the service specifically permits it, YouTube and the relevant rights holder give permission, or applicable law allows it.

A download of your own upload or content explicitly offered under a suitable license is different from extracting a commercial recording without authorization.

Bottom line on Y2Mate
Y2Mate was once widely used, but the original Y2mate.com shut down on October 14, 2025. Current sites and apps using the name are unrelated or insufficiently verified, and their advertised buttons, bitrate options, and length limits differ. Treat claims of an “official Y2Mate,” guaranteed 320-kbps audio, or a universal current workflow with caution.
For your own videos, use YouTube Studio → Content → video menu → Download. For licensed or permitted content, use the download method supplied by the creator or service. For offline listening, YouTube Premium keeps playback inside YouTube rather than creating MP3 files.

Can Y2Mate download private or age-restricted YouTube videos?
Current Y2Mate-branded sites commonly reject private and age-restricted videos, as well as livestreams and URLs that exceed their domain-specific limits.
Does a 320-kbps Y2Mate MP3 sound like the original source?
Not necessarily. A converter can label its output 320 kbps, but that bitrate cannot restore information lost in the original stream. Re-encoding a compressed source may add further quality loss.
Can YouTube Premium download MP3 files?
No. Premium downloads are for offline playback within the YouTube service. YouTube says its app does not provide a way to download audio, music, or MP3 files.
How do I download one of my own YouTube videos?
In YouTube Studio, open Content, select the video’s menu, and choose Download. YouTube supplies an MP4, normally at 720p or 360p depending on the video.
