You cannot replace Windows 11’s DirectX 12 runtime with DirectX 11. If a game supports DirectX 11, select it in the game’s settings or use a launch option documented for that game. If a game reports a missing legacy DirectX file, install Microsoft’s legacy runtime; it adds older libraries without downgrading Windows.
First, check what you actually need to change
“Change DirectX 12 to 11” can mean several different things:
| What you want | What to do |
|---|---|
| Run a game with Direct3D 11 | Select DX11 in the game or use its documented launch option. |
| Install missing files such as D3DX11.dll or XAudio2_7.dll | Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX End-User Runtime. |
| Replace Windows 11’s DirectX 12 runtime | This is not supported. |
DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 can coexist on the same PC. Microsoft says Direct3D 12 drivers support at least feature level 11_0, but whether a game can use DirectX 11 depends on the game and its available renderers.
Method 1: Select DirectX 11 in the game
If the game supports both APIs, this is the simplest method:
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by Radeon RX 9070 XT
- WINDFORCE Cooling System
- Hawk Fan
- Server-grade Thermal Conductive Gel
- RGB Lighting
- Start the game and open Settings, Options, or Video.
- Open Graphics or Display.
- Look for Graphics API, Rendering API, Renderer, or DirectX Version.
- Select DirectX 11, Direct3D 11, or DX11, then apply or save the change.
- Restart the game if prompted.
Menu names vary by game. If there is no DirectX 11 option, the game may not support that renderer. A Windows setting cannot add support the game does not include.
Method 2: Use a game-specific launch option
Some games accept a command-line switch to select DirectX 11, but there is no universal Windows command. Use only an option confirmed by the game’s developer or documentation.
Steam games
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- On the General tab, find Launch Options.
- Enter the option documented for that game, close the window, and start the game.
Steam’s documented path is Library > right-click game > Properties > General > Launch Options. Multiple options are separated by spaces. Depending on the game, a switch might be -dx11 or -d3d11; neither works universally. An unsupported option may be ignored or may prevent the game from starting.
Special case: Source and GoldSrc games
Steam documents -dxlevel for GoldSrc and Source engine games. Examples include:

This is not a general DirectX 12-to-11 command and does not automatically apply to third-party games. Steam also says DirectX 7 is no longer supported as a launch option for its games, so remove -dxlevel 70 if present.
Windows 11 Graphics settings do not select DirectX 11
Windows 11’s per-app GPU preferences are at Start > Settings > System > Display > Graphics > select the app or game > Options. Choices can include:
- Let Windows decide
- Power saving
- High performance
These preferences select which GPU an app uses; they do not choose between DirectX 11 and DirectX 12. Optimizations for windowed games also does not convert a DirectX 12 game to DirectX 11. Microsoft describes that feature as affecting compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless-windowed modes.
How to check the DirectX version in Windows 11
- Open Start and type dxdiag.
- Select dxdiag from the results.
- In DirectX Diagnostic Tool, open the System tab.
- Under System Information, read DirectX Version.
This reports the DirectX runtime installed in Windows, not necessarily the renderer a game used. Check the game’s graphics menu, startup message, log, or diagnostic overlay to verify its active renderer.

Install legacy DirectX files without downgrading Windows
A missing-file error can occur even when Windows reports DirectX 12. It may indicate that the game needs optional older side-by-side libraries rather than a replacement for the core runtime. Examples include:
- D3DX9, D3DX10, or D3DX11
- XAudio 2.7
- XInput 1.3
- XACT
- Managed DirectX 1.1 components
Download Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, or use the DirectX installer in the game’s own Redist or prerequisites folder. Do not download individual DLL files from third-party websites.
Use the offline June 2010 package
If the web installer fails while downloading components, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010). Microsoft lists the package file as directx_Jun2010_redist.exe, version 9.29.1974.1, approximately 95.6 MB.
- Download and run the package.
- Choose an extraction folder when prompted.
- Open the extracted folder and run DXSETUP.exe.
- Complete setup, then restart the game.
The package installs legacy libraries alongside Windows components; it does not replace or downgrade Windows 11’s DirectX runtime.

What to do when switching to DX11 does not work
| Symptom | Likely cause and solution |
|---|---|
| No DirectX 11 option | The game may be DirectX 12-only or may not expose a renderer choice. Installing an older runtime cannot add a renderer the game does not contain. |
| The launch option does nothing | The switch may be unsupported, misspelled, intended for another engine, or not passed through by another launcher. Check the game’s documentation. |
| The game still says DirectX 12 | That may describe the highest installed Windows runtime, not the game’s active renderer. Check the game’s settings or log. |
| DirectX setup reports “An internal system error occurred” | The web installer may have failed to download components. Try the June 2010 offline package. |
| The game reports a missing D3DX, XAudio2_7.dll, or xinput1_3.dll file | Install the official legacy runtime or the prerequisite package supplied with the game. |
Do not uninstall DirectX 12
Windows 11’s core DirectX components, including Direct3D, DirectInput, and DirectSound, are part of Windows and maintained through Windows Update. They cannot be separately uninstalled and replaced with DirectX 11. Avoid registry scripts, unofficial downgrade tools, and DLL replacement instructions; they cannot make a DirectX 12-only game support DirectX 11 and may damage Windows or the game installation.

Can I uninstall DirectX 12 and install DirectX 11 on Windows 11?
No. The core DirectX runtime is part of Windows and cannot be separately replaced. A game that supports DirectX 11 can use it without downgrading Windows.
Does the June 2010 DirectX package change DirectX 12 to DirectX 11?
No. It installs optional legacy libraries alongside Windows components and does not modify the DirectX runtime installed in Windows.
Does Windows 11’s Graphics page have a DirectX 11 option?
No. It sets a GPU preference, such as Power saving or High performance; it does not select a DirectX version.

- WINDFORCE cooling system
Will -dx11 work with every game?
No. Launch options are game- or engine-specific. Use a switch only when the game’s documentation or developer confirms it.
Why does dxdiag still show DirectX 12 after I selected DirectX 11?
dxdiag reports the Windows-installed runtime, not necessarily the renderer selected by a particular game. Verify the active renderer in the game’s settings, log, or diagnostic overlay.
Bottom line
You cannot downgrade Windows 11 itself from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11. Select DX11 inside a compatible game or use its documented launch option. If the problem is a missing legacy DLL, install Microsoft’s side-by-side DirectX End-User Runtime instead.
