To make a TikTok Duet, open the video you want to use, tap Share, choose Duet (swipe to find it if needed), and record your side. Tap the check mark, edit the video, then tap Next and Post, or save it to Drafts. A Duet displays your video beside the original, with both playing at the same time.
The Duet option is not available on every video. The original creator controls whether others can reuse a video, and account privacy and audience settings can affect who is allowed to Duet.
How to Duet on TikTok
- Open the TikTok app and find the video you want to use.
- Tap Share on the side of the video.
- Tap Duet in the bottom row of options. Swipe across the row if necessary.
- Choose any available effects, filters, or camera tools.
- Tap Record to start and stop your recording.
- Tap the check mark to continue.
- Use the editing screen to add a filter, voice, text, stickers, or effects.
- Tap Next to add a description, hashtags, tagged accounts, a location, a link, and privacy settings.
- Tap Post to publish the Duet, or tap Drafts to save it. TikTok says drafts are visible only to you on your profile.
You can also choose Your Story in the editing flow to share the Duet to your TikTok Story.
What happens when you make a Duet?
A Duet displays your recording side by side with the source video, with both videos playing at the same time. Available layout and editing controls may vary.

The finished Duet is your post. It appears on your profile, while the original video remains on the original creator’s account.
You set the audience and interaction settings for your finished post. The original creator’s reuse settings determine whether you can make a Duet from their video in the first place.
Why is the Duet option missing?
Not all videos have Duet enabled. If Duet does not appear in the Share menu, the original creator may not allow reuse of that video, or their account-level audience settings may not include you. The creator’s account must be public to allow others to Duet their videos.

Do not confuse your own Duet settings with the source creator’s permissions: changing your settings cannot make someone else’s video available for Duet.
How to allow or disable Duets on your TikTok videos
TikTok groups Duet permissions under Reuse of content. Button placement may vary as the app changes.
Change the account-wide setting
- Open TikTok and tap Profile.
- Tap the Menu ☰ button.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Tap Privacy, then Reuse of content.
- Tap Allow reuse of content from.
- Choose Everyone or Friends. Friends are followers you follow back.
Your account must be public to allow other people to Duet your videos. The account-wide audience setting and the individual post’s reuse setting both affect availability.

Change the setting before publishing
- Create and edit your TikTok post.
- On the Post screen, tap More options.
- Turn Allow reuse of content on or off.
Turning off reuse prevents others from Duetting with that video. TikTok says the setting also affects Stitching, creating stickers from the post, and adding the post to someone’s Story.
Change the setting after publishing
- Open the published video from your profile.
- Tap More options … on the video.
- Tap Privacy settings. You may need to swipe through the options.
- Find Allow reuse of content and turn it on or off.
Duet privacy settings for teens
TikTok’s settings differ by age and account privacy. Users ages 13–15 cannot allow others to Duet with their videos. For users ages 16–17, a private account prevents others from Duetting with their videos. On a public account, Friends is the default audience for Duets and can be changed to Everyone. A creator can also turn off reuse for an individual post.

Use Privacy settings
- Tap Profile, then Menu ☰.
- Tap Settings and privacy, then Privacy.
- Tap Reuse of content, then Reuse of content history.
- Select the relevant original video.
- Tap More options … and choose Remove all posts.
- Confirm the removal.
Use Activity center
- Go to Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy.
- Tap Activity center, then Reuse of content history.
- Select the original video and tap the More options … button beside it.
Practical tips for a better Duet
- Choose a video with a clear handoff. Tutorials, questions, performances, and reaction prompts give your contribution a natural place.
- Check the layout before recording. Make sure your face, instrument, product, or demonstration will not be hidden by the source video.
- Use headphones when appropriate. They can reduce echo and prevent the source audio from being picked up again by your microphone.
- Watch the preview before posting. Check the crop, timing, text placement, and audio balance.
- Explain your response. A short description can give context to your Duet.
- Save a draft if the timing needs work. Drafts are visible only to you on your profile until you publish them.

Can I Duet any TikTok video?
No. The original creator controls whether a video can be reused, and account privacy and audience settings can limit who can Duet it.
Where does my TikTok Duet appear?
The Duet appears as a post on the profile of the person who recorded it. It does not automatically appear on the original creator’s profile.
Why can my friend Duet a video but I cannot?
The creator may allow Duets from Friends only. On TikTok, Friends are followers the creator follows back, so your friend may qualify while you do not.

Does disabling Duet disable Stitch too?
TikTok says turning off Allow reuse of content also affects Stitch, creating stickers from the post, and adding the post to a Story.
Can I remove only one Duet made from my video?
TikTok documents a Remove all posts option that removes the original post and associated Duet and Stitch videos. It is not a selective Duet-only removal option.
Are TikTok Duet drafts public?
No. TikTok says drafts are visible only to you on your profile until you publish them.
