To restore Word’s large Ribbon, choose Ribbon Display Options > Always show Ribbon; if only its tabs are visible, Ctrl+F1 also expands it. To restore the smaller Quick Access Toolbar, right-click the Ribbon and select Show Quick Access Toolbar. The steps differ slightly for Windows, Mac, and Word for the web.
In Word, “toolbar” usually means one of two different controls:
- The Ribbon is the large command area with tabs such as Home, Insert, and Design.
- The Quick Access Toolbar is the smaller shortcut bar used for commands such as Save, Undo, and Redo.
The fix depends on which one disappeared. Use the section for your version of Word: Windows, Mac, or Word for the web.

When the tabs are visible but the commands are missing
If you can see tabs such as Home and Insert, but the buttons below them are gone, the Ribbon is collapsed.
