On Windows 11, you can install the official ChatGPT app through the Microsoft Store, or use OpenAI’s newer desktop-app download flow when available. Open the app and sign in; the Store app is described by OpenAI as an early version, and its documentation lists access for Plus, Team, Edu, and Enterprise plans.
This guide covers both installation routes, first sign-in, useful keyboard shortcuts, the Companion Window, desktop features, updates, and the reset procedure if the app stops working.
Check that Windows 11 is supported
OpenAI lists Windows 10 version 17763.0 or later as the minimum requirement for the Windows app, on either x64 or arm64 hardware. Windows 11 meets that version requirement.
To check your Windows version, press Windows + R, enter winver, and press Enter. The documentation does not list separate Windows 11 edition requirements.

Install ChatGPT from the Microsoft Store
- Open the Microsoft Store from the Start menu.
- Search for the official ChatGPT listing.
- Open the listing and choose the installation option shown by the Store.
- Wait for Windows to download and install the app.
- Open ChatGPT from the Store, the Start menu, or Windows Search.
OpenAI’s Windows-app documentation confirms Microsoft Store distribution, but the exact button label can vary between Store versions and account states. Check that the listing is the official ChatGPT app before installing it.
When the Microsoft Store is blocked
A work or school administrator may restrict Store applications. For ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu, access follows the organization’s Microsoft Store policies.
If users cannot install Store apps directly, an administrator can deploy ChatGPT with mobile device management or mobile application management tools such as Microsoft Intune. Contact the organization’s IT administrator rather than attempting to bypass the Store policy.
Install with Windows Package Manager
OpenAI documents winget as an installation method, especially for IT departments managing Enterprise workspaces. Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell and run the command shown in OpenAI’s documentation:

There is an important detail in OpenAI’s published command: the character before silent is a typographic en dash (–), not the two normal hyphens used by standard winget options. If the published command fails, use the normal Windows Package Manager spelling:

OpenAI documents this installation method in its Windows app release notes and prints the command in its Windows-app documentation.
Use the newer ChatGPT desktop app
OpenAI also documents a newer ChatGPT desktop app. Its first-time setup is:
- Download the ChatGPT desktop app for your operating system from the official OpenAI download path.
- Open the downloaded app.
- Sign in to your ChatGPT account.
The newer app may install alongside the previous application. If both are installed, the new application is named ChatGPT and the previous one is named ChatGPT Classic.
Migration is not mandatory at launch. ChatGPT Classic continues to receive model updates, bug fixes, security patches, and support for existing Enterprise capabilities. Some newer agent features may be limited to the new ChatGPT app.

If the existing app displays an in-app prompt to download the new version, follow that prompt and sign in with the same ChatGPT account if you want access to your existing account-related content and workspace. See OpenAI’s desktop-app migration guidance.
Sign in and choose the right workspace
On first launch, select the sign-in option and complete the account authentication flow. Use the account associated with your Plus, Team, Edu, or Enterprise workspace when applicable. If you sign in with a different account, your chats, projects, and organization access may not appear.

In the newer desktop app, the top-left menu lets you choose between ChatGPT and Codex. Within ChatGPT, a top-of-page toggle switches between Chat and Work.
- Recents: Chat and Work conversations appear together and can be sorted, filtered, or pinned.
- Projects: Existing ChatGPT Projects appear here. Open a project and choose Chat for a normal conversation or Work for a Work conversation using the project’s context.
- Codex: Codex is a separate view, and its history remains separate from ChatGPT history.
Open the Companion Window
With the ChatGPT app open, press Alt + Space to open the Companion Window. It provides a compact way to use ChatGPT without bringing the main window to the foreground.

You can use the Companion Window to:
- Ask a question
- Upload a file
- Generate a new image
- Start a new conversation
To clear the current Companion Window conversation, select New chat at the top of the window. If you close it accidentally, press Alt + Space again or continue the conversation from chat history in the main window’s sidebar.
The window remembers its previous position. After the app is reset, it returns to the bottom-center position on the screen.
Change the Companion Window shortcut
Alt + Space will not work if another Windows application has already registered that shortcut. To choose another key combination:
- Open ChatGPT.
- Open Settings.
- Select App.
- Choose Companion window hotkey.
- Set a shortcut that is not claimed by another application.
Useful Windows app features
Capture and attach a screenshot
The Windows app can use the Windows Snipping Tool to capture a window, the entire screen, or a custom region and insert the result into a chat. This is useful for error messages, settings screens, diagrams, and webpages that are difficult to describe accurately.
Take a webcam photo
The Take Photos feature uses your webcam to take a picture and attach it directly to a conversation. Windows may ask for camera permission the first time you use it. If you deny permission, enable camera access in Windows privacy settings and try again.

Use Advanced Voice Mode
The Windows app supports Advanced Voice Mode. Select the voice feature in the ChatGPT interface and allow microphone access when Windows requests it. A headset can reduce feedback when the app is being used near speakers.
Search previous chats
Press Control + K to open chat-history search. Search using a distinctive word or phrase from the conversation rather than a broad term such as “project” or “meeting.”
Adjust text size
Use Ctrl + Plus to increase text scaling and Ctrl + Minus to decrease it. The change is useful on high-resolution displays or when the app’s text is difficult to read.

The Windows app includes a settings control for checking for updates. Open ChatGPT’s settings and look for the update-checking option. OpenAI’s release notes confirm that the control exists but do not specify a single current settings path, so its location may differ between app versions.
After some updates, the app may ask you to sign in again. OpenAI noted that a November 14, 2024 update relocated application user-data storage for some users, which could trigger another sign-in.

Windows 11 provides an app reset option that can repair local application problems. Use it when ChatGPT repeatedly crashes, fails to load, or gets stuck after an update.
- Open the Windows Settings app.
- Go to Apps > Installed Apps.
- Find ChatGPT.
- Select the app’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced Options.
- Select Reset.
Resetting can affect local application state. For example, the Companion Window position returns to the bottom center after a reset. You may also need to sign in again. See OpenAI’s Windows-app documentation for the reset path.

FAQ
Is there an official ChatGPT .exe installer for Windows 11?
OpenAI’s Windows-app documentation identifies the Microsoft Store as the official distribution route and does not provide a separate standalone .exe installer path. OpenAI also documents a newer desktop-app download flow, so use the official OpenAI download page or Microsoft Store rather than an unofficial executable site.
Is the Windows ChatGPT app only available to Plus users?
No. OpenAI’s Windows-app documentation lists Plus, Team, Edu, and Enterprise access. The newer desktop-app documentation describes a broader desktop-app distribution path without repeating the former paid-plan-only limitation.
Does installing the new app remove ChatGPT Classic?
