If ChatGPT is stuck on “Thinking…,” “Generating…,” or “Working…,” wait 30–60 seconds, then select Stop generating followed by Regenerate. If that does not work, start a new chat, reload the page or app, and check whether OpenAI reports an active incident. If the problem persists, test a clean browser session and another device or network, then contact Support with diagnostic details.
Quick fixes for a stuck ChatGPT response
| Where the problem occurs | What to try |
|---|---|
| One response | Wait 30–60 seconds, select Stop generating, then Regenerate. |
| One long conversation | Start a new chat and resend the prompt. |
| One browser | Try a private window or a different browser with extensions disabled. |
| One device or network | Try another device or network to help isolate the issue. |
| Multiple browsers, devices, or networks | Check OpenAI’s status page and contact Support if the problem continues. |
1. Wait, stop, and retry the response
A response that appears stuck may still finish. Wait 30–60 seconds. If it does not, select Stop generating, then select Regenerate.
2. Start a new chat
If retrying does not help, start a new chat and resend the prompt. OpenAI also recommends trying a new chat when a conversation is long or has many turns. This is a useful test, but does not by itself confirm what caused the problem.
3. Reload ChatGPT and sign in again
Refresh the page or reload the desktop app. In a browser, you can try a hard refresh with Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows or Linux, or Cmd + Shift + R on macOS. If the issue continues, sign out and back in.
