There is no single best viewer for everyone. These recommendations are based on features rather than performance benchmarks; vendors do not publish directly comparable Windows 11 performance tests.

1. FastStone Image Viewer: best overall
FastStone Image Viewer combines a viewer, folder browser, organizer, editor, converter, comparison tool, slideshow creator, scanner importer, and print utility. The current official release is version 8.5, dated June 24, 2026. It added SVG support, import options, WebP rotation and saving, PDF viewer improvements, and a fix for non-clickable PDF links. FastStone’s version history lists the release details.

- Compare up to four images side by side.
- Display EXIF information and edit JPEG comments.
- Apply ratings and tags.
- Convert and rename images in batches.
- Open supported RAW formats and perform lossless JPEG transformations.
- Create contact sheets and slideshows.
- Import images from scanners and capture screenshots.
- Crop, resize, annotate, adjust color, remove red-eye, and use clone or healing tools.
- Use a portable version, touch controls, and dual-monitor support.
Useful menu paths include Tools > Change Timestamp, Tools > Remove JPEG Metadata, and Create > Slide Show Builder. The slideshow builder can package images and music as a standalone EXE slideshow that plays on another computer without FastStone installed.

FastStone version 7.9, released October 17, 2024, fixed a Windows 11 24H2 compatibility problem that could cause crashes when accessing network folders. The current release includes that fix. FastStone version history

2. Microsoft Photos: best no-install option
Microsoft Photos is built into Windows 11 and is useful for viewing, browsing, lightly editing, and sharing pictures. It integrates with OneDrive and iCloud Photos. To open it, type Photos in Windows Search and select an image. Choose Edit image or press Ctrl + E to access cropping, rotation, flipping, light and color adjustments, filters, markup, Generative Erase, and background blur, removal, or replacement. Do not confuse new Photos with Photos Legacy
The current Photos app is not the same as Photos Legacy. Microsoft documents that the new app does not include the old People tab, similar-face grouping, tag-based search, the previous album model, or the built-in video editor. Microsoft directs users to Settings > Open Clipchamp for video editing, and Photos Legacy remains available as a separate download. Microsoft’s documented changes
Photos search and online editing limitations
Standard Photos search can use file names, capture dates, file types such as PNG and JPEG, and location when location-based features are enabled. The setting is under Photos > Settings > Personalization > Enable Location Based Features. Natural-language search, such as “sunset at the beach,” is documented specifically for Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs and searches indexed local photos. Choose Microsoft Photos if: you want a built-in viewer, use OneDrive or iCloud, and need basic photo adjustments.
3. IrfanView: best lightweight utility
IrfanView is a small utility for quick viewing, batch processing, conversion, scanning, printing, slideshows, command-line options, and plug-ins. The current official release is version 4.75, available for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. Its ARM64 download is version 4.73, so the editions do not share the same version number. The official homepage describes IrfanView as approximately 8 MB. It supports viewing, optimization, conversion, scanning, printing, slideshows, batch operations, Unicode, dark mode, and multimedia files. What is IrfanView?
Formats that may need extra components

4. XnView MP: best for catalogs and large collections
XnView MP is designed for managing image libraries, not just opening individual files. Its official Windows page lists version 1.11.5 and offers installer and ZIP downloads for 64-bit Windows. Its SQLite catalog can index selected folders and store thumbnails, EXIF, IPTC, and XMP metadata, ratings, and labels. 5. ImageGlass: best modern open-source viewer
ImageGlass is a clean alternative to older utility-style viewers. The project says it supports more than 90 common formats, including WebP, GIF, SVG, PNG, JPEG XL, HEIC, and AVIF. ImageGlass project
The stable release is ImageGlass 9.5.0.515, released May 14, 2026. ImageGlass 10 RC 10.0.3.720 is a separate release candidate, not the stable production version. ImageGlass 9.5 added DPI information editing under Settings > General, sibling-directory auto-switching under Settings > Image, and fixes for opening the app from Windows Search and for progressive window shrinking on secondary monitors. Classic versus Microsoft Store editions
The free ImageGlass Classic edition is available from ImageGlass.org and other official distribution sources. Updates are user-managed, and Classic includes advanced configuration options. The Microsoft Store version is paid, offers a seven-day trial, and updates automatically through the Store. ImageGlass requires 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 1809/build 17763 or later. The 64-bit WebView2 Runtime version 119.0.2151 or later is listed as optional. ImageGlass system requirements
ImageGlass 10 preview builds introduce native HDR rendering, vector rendering, a new plug-in SDK, a settings interface, and plug-in security changes. These features belong to the preview line, not stable 9.5. ImageGlass release news

Windows 11 assigns default apps by file type. Setting a viewer for .jpg does not necessarily set it for .png, .webp, .avif, .heic, or RAW files. Microsoft’s instructions for changing default apps
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for a file extension such as .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .webp, or .heic, or select the app and change its registered file types.
- Select the current application for the file type.
- Choose your preferred viewer and confirm the change.
- Repeat for each file type you use.
If IrfanView will not become the default
IrfanView’s FAQ documents a Windows 11 issue in which Microsoft Photos can prevent its associations from being applied. Repair Photos, then retry the associations. IrfanView FAQ
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Photos and open Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps and retry the file associations.
If Repair does not help, use Reset in the same Advanced options screen. IrfanView also suggests reinstalling it with administrator rights if needed.
