A Lenovo laptop does not use one universal Windows 11 touchpad driver. The correct download depends on the laptop’s exact model or machine type, touchpad hardware—often ELAN or Synaptics—and the Windows 11 release it supports.
The safest approach is to identify the Lenovo laptop, open its model-specific support page, and download the package listed under Drivers & Software. Windows Update and Lenovo Vantage are useful alternatives, but they may not show every package Lenovo publishes.
1. Identify the exact Lenovo laptop model
Do not search only for “Lenovo touchpad driver” or download the newest ELAN or Synaptics package from a third-party website. Lenovo packages are commonly restricted to particular models, machine types, and Windows versions.
Find the model using any of these methods:
- Read the model and serial-number label on the underside of the laptop.
- Open Lenovo Support and select Detect Product.
- On Lenovo Support, select View PC Support, then use Browse Product.
- Open Lenovo Vantage. Lenovo says the Vantage landing page displays the system type and serial number.
Lenovo’s Detect Product option may ask you to install or run Lenovo Service Bridge. This utility detects the system type and serial number so Lenovo can open the correct product page.

Find the model with PowerShell
When the label is difficult to read, use Windows 11’s built-in PowerShell commands. Right-click Start, choose Terminal or PowerShell, and run:
(Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_ComputerSystem).Model
To display the serial number, run:
(Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BIOS -Property SerialNumber).SerialNumber
These commands use Microsoft’s current Get-CimInstance method for querying Windows system information.
About the old WMIC commands: Commands such as wmic bios get serialnumber and wmic csproduct get name may still work on some older installations. However, WMIC is not preinstalled by default starting with Windows 11 version 24H2. PowerShell is the more reliable choice.
2. Download the driver from Lenovo Support
- Open Lenovo Support.
- Select Detect Product or View PC Support.
- After Lenovo identifies the laptop, open its Product Home page.
- Select Drivers & Software.
- Under Manual Update, select Select Drivers.
- Set the operating-system filter to the Windows 11 64-bit option available for that laptop.
- Search the categories or page for Touchpad, TrackPad, ELAN, Synaptics, TrackPoint, or Mouse.
- Read the package details and select Download or the download icon.
Before downloading, compare the package information with your laptop:
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Supported model or machine type | Lenovo may publish similarly named packages for different laptops. |
| Operating-system support | Some packages support Windows 11 21H2 or later, while others require 23H2 or 24H2 or later. |
| Driver family | ELAN, Synaptics, TrackPoint, and other devices are not interchangeable. |
| Version and release date | This helps you avoid installing an older package over a newer working driver. |
| Severity and README | The README can specify prerequisites, installation order, known limitations, and supported products. |
Open Lenovo’s README before running the installer when one is provided. Lenovo says the README contains installation instructions, version information, supported products, and known limitations. For Lenovo’s download process, see Lenovo’s driver-download instructions.
Choose by Lenovo model, not only by touchpad brand
A package called “ELAN Touchpad Driver” is not automatically correct for every Lenovo laptop with an ELAN touchpad. Lenovo’s package may support only a defined list of models or machine types. A mismatched installer can report that the system is unsupported, complete without changing anything, or cause the touchpad to stop responding.

The same caution applies to packages labelled TrackPoint or touchpad firmware. A TrackPoint package is not necessarily the main touchpad driver, and firmware is not a substitute for a normal device driver.
3. Try Lenovo Vantage
If Lenovo Vantage is installed, it can select updates for the specific laptop without requiring you to identify the touchpad manufacturer. Lenovo lists Vantage as a recommended driver-update method for supported Windows PCs.
Open Lenovo Vantage and go to:
Dashboard > System Update > Check for System Updates
Install a touchpad-related update if one is offered, then restart Windows. Vantage may not list a driver when Lenovo considers the system current, has not published the package through Vantage, or distributes the update through Windows Update instead.

Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the normal way to obtain updated touchpad drivers. In Windows 11, open:
Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates
Then check optional drivers separately:
Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates
- Expand Driver updates, if the section is present.
- Select the relevant touchpad, HID, ELAN, or Synaptics driver.
- Select Download and install.
- Restart the laptop after installation finishes.
Recommended drivers can be installed automatically through Windows Update, but optional driver updates are not installed automatically. The Optional updates page may not appear when no optional updates are available, so its absence does not necessarily indicate a fault.

5. Install the downloaded driver
Most Lenovo touchpad downloads are executable installers. After the file finishes downloading:
- Open File Explorer > Downloads.
- Double-click the Lenovo driver file.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt if shown.
- Follow the installer’s instructions and accept the license terms.
- Restart Windows when prompted, or restart manually after the installation finishes.
If the download is a compressed archive rather than an installer, extract it to a known folder. You can then install it through Device Manager using the downloaded folder.
6. Update the driver through Device Manager
Use Device Manager if the Lenovo installer fails, or if you already have the extracted driver files.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices.
- Look for a device named HID-compliant touch pad, ELAN, Synaptics, Lenovo pointing device, or I2C HID Device.
- Right-click the likely touchpad device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or choose the option to browse to the Lenovo driver folder.
- Restart the laptop.
Microsoft identifies Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices as the two Device Manager categories where a touchpad may appear. An I2C HID entry may be part of the touchpad connection rather than the touchpad’s branded driver. Device Manager may not find the newest or correct manufacturer package; if it cannot find a suitable driver, use the exact Lenovo model’s support page.

If updating does not restore the touchpad, reinstall its device entry:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click the touchpad device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- In the confirmation window, select Uninstall.
- Restart using Start > Power > Restart.
After restarting, Windows will attempt to detect the hardware and reinstall an applicable driver. Microsoft says reinstalling the touchpad can prompt Windows Update to provide the latest applicable driver.
Do not remove the driver package casually. The uninstall dialog may offer a checkbox to remove the driver package from the computer. Leave that option unchecked unless you have already downloaded the correct Lenovo driver or have another recovery method. Removing the package can leave the touchpad with only a generic or nonfunctional driver.
8. Make sure the touchpad is enabled
A driver is not always the cause of a nonworking touchpad. Check the Windows setting first:

The touchpad is missing from Device Manager
Select View > Show hidden devices in Device Manager, then inspect both touchpad-related categories again.
If the device is still absent, the problem may involve a disabled device, missing chipset or Serial IO drivers, an I2C dependency, or a hardware failure. From the exact Lenovo model page, install the chipset and Serial IO packages as well as the touchpad package, following the order in Lenovo’s README. A missing touchpad entry does not prove that the touchpad itself is physically broken.

The installer says that the system is unsupported
This usually indicates a mismatch between the package and the laptop model, machine type, Windows edition, or Windows release. Return to the laptop-specific Drivers & Software page instead of forcing the installation or using a generic download.
The installer completes, but nothing changes
Check whether you downloaded:
- The wrong driver family, such as Synaptics instead of ELAN.
- A TrackPoint driver rather than the main touchpad driver.
- Touchpad firmware rather than a normal driver.
- An older package than the driver already installed.
- A package that depends on chipset, Serial IO, firmware, or another Lenovo component.
Compare the package name and README with the exact model page, then restart Windows before testing again.
Windows Update finds nothing
Windows Update finding no driver does not mean that Lenovo has no driver. Check Advanced options > Optional updates, then use the model-specific Lenovo Support page if no suitable package appears.
The touchpad stopped working after reinstalling Windows 11
A clean Windows installation may not include the chipset, Serial IO, or touchpad drivers needed by the laptop. Connect to the internet, run Windows Update, and use a USB mouse temporarily if necessary. Then install the Lenovo chipset, Serial IO, and touchpad packages in the order specified by the relevant README files.

No package supports the installed Windows 11 release
Read the operating-system requirements on the Lenovo download page. Some packages specify Windows 11 version 21H2 or later, 23H2 or later, or 24H2 or later. Do not install a package whose supported Windows release does not include the version installed on your laptop.

FAQ
Is there one touchpad driver for all Lenovo laptops running Windows 11?
No. Lenovo uses different touchpad hardware and publishes packages for specific models or machine types. The package may be for ELAN, Synaptics, TrackPoint, or another component, and may support only particular Windows 11 releases.
How do I find my Lenovo laptop model without turning it over?
Open PowerShell or Windows Terminal and run (Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_ComputerSystem).Model. To retrieve the serial number, run (Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BIOS -Property SerialNumber).SerialNumber.
Should I download an ELAN or Synaptics driver from a third-party site?
Avoid doing so unless Lenovo specifically directs you. The hardware brand alone is not enough; the driver must also match the Lenovo model, machine type, and supported Windows 11 release.
Why is the touchpad not shown in Device Manager?
It may be disabled by a function key or firmware setting, hidden, dependent on missing chipset or Serial IO drivers, or affected by a hardware problem. Turn on View > Show hidden devices and check both Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices.
Can Windows Update install the Lenovo touchpad driver automatically?
It can install recommended drivers automatically, but optional driver updates require manual selection. Check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates.
What should I do before uninstalling the touchpad driver?
Download the correct Lenovo driver first if possible. When uninstalling, do not select the option to remove the driver package unless you already have a way to restore it.
The Bottom Line
Identify the exact Lenovo model or machine type first, then use its Lenovo Support page to download the Windows 11 touchpad package. Lenovo Vantage and Windows Update are worth checking before a manual installation, while Device Manager can update or reinstall a package that is already present.
