To stop using Bing as your default, select another search engine in the browser where you type searches. The steps depend on your browser and device; changing the default usually does not remove Bing from the list of available engines. If Bing returns or a setting is locked, check extensions and whether the browser is managed.
Change Bing in Microsoft Edge on desktop
- Search once from the address bar using the engine you want. Edge may need to discover a site that supports OpenSearch before it appears as an option.
- Open Settings and more > Settings.
- Select Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected services > Address bar and search.
- Under Search engine used in the address bar, choose the replacement for Bing.
This changes address-bar searches. If searches from the new-tab page still use Bing, check its separate search-box setting and choose Address bar if that option is available.
Change Bing in Google Chrome
Desktop
- Open Chrome and select More > Settings.
- Select Search engine.
- Under Search engine, select Change.
- Choose the engine you want instead of Bing.
To manage site-search shortcuts, open Search engine > Manage search engines and site search. Managing shortcuts is separate from choosing the default search engine.
Android
- Open Chrome and tap More > Settings.
- Under Basics, tap Search engine.
- Select the engine you want to use.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Chrome and tap More > Settings.
- Tap Search engine.
- Select the engine you want to use. Recently visited engines may be listed as options.
Change Bing in Mozilla Firefox on desktop
- Open the Firefox menu and select Settings.
- Select Search.
- Under Default search engine, choose another provider.
Changing the default does not necessarily remove Bing from the available-engine list. Firefox has separate Search Shortcuts and Additional search engines controls to hide a built-in engine or remove an added one. Extensions can also change the default; if Bing reappears, review extensions in the Add-ons Manager.

Change Bing in Safari on Mac
- Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings.
- Select Search.
- Choose your preferred search engine.
Apple also documents choosing a search engine from the Smart Search field after clearing its text.
Change the iPhone search-engine preference
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap Search > Search Engine.
- Choose the preferred option and return to Settings.
Apple documents this path for the iPhone search-engine preference. App-specific browser settings may also control searches made in that browser.

Default search engine versus removing Bing
Changing the default means searches typed in the address bar use another provider. It does not necessarily delete or hide Bing from the browser’s available-engine list. Firefox, for example, has separate controls for hiding built-in engines or removing added ones.

Check extensions
In Firefox, Mozilla identifies extensions as a possible cause of a changed or reappearing default. Review installed add-ons and disable or remove one you do not recognize or trust. In Chrome, Google says an unexpected search-engine change may indicate malware and points users to its malware-removal and settings-restoration guidance; one symptom alone does not prove malware.

Check whether the browser is managed
A work or school administrator may manage search settings or restrict changes. If the setting is locked or unavailable on a managed device, ask the administrator rather than repeatedly trying to change it.
Check Edge’s new-tab search separately
If Edge address-bar searches use the provider you selected but searches from a new-tab page still use Bing, check the new-tab search-box setting. Choose Address bar where that option is available.

How to verify the change
- Open a new tab in the browser you changed.
- Type a test search into the address bar and press Enter.
- Check that results come from your selected provider.
- In Edge, also test the new-tab search box if you use it; it can behave separately from the address bar.
FAQ
Does changing the default remove Bing from my browser?
No. It makes another provider the default for searches in the browser. Removing or hiding Bing from the available-engine list is a separate action, where the browser offers that control.
Why is the search-engine setting locked?
A work or school administrator may manage the browser or device settings. Ask the administrator if the device is managed.

Why does Bing return after I change the setting?
An extension may have changed the default, or the browser may be managed. Review extensions, and follow the browser vendor’s security guidance if the change is unexpected.
Why does Bing still appear in Edge new-tab searches?

Can I change the search engine on my iPhone?
