What the unarc.dll error means
The wording points to a failure during an installer’s unpacking process. It does not establish that unarc.dll is a missing Windows system file or that a particular Windows setting is responsible. For example, a Microsoft Q&A user reported the message “ISDone.dll An error occurred while unpacking: Unable to read data! Unarc.dll returned an error code: -6.” That report illustrates the wording, but it is not a general diagnosis.
Record the complete message, numeric code, application name, and whether the publisher’s verification check succeeds. The reviewed sources do not establish a reliable code-by-code explanation.
1. Record the error and check the installer
- Write down the full error text, including any “Unable to read data” message and numeric code.
- Use the application publisher’s or authorized distributor’s installer source.
- If the publisher provides an integrity or file verification option, run it. Otherwise, obtain a fresh installer from that source.
- If the same installer fails again, check the publisher’s support materials for that application.
A fresh or verified installer is a sensible first check, but the error alone does not prove that installer data is corrupt.

2. Check available storage and the destination
- Open File Explorer and select This PC to check available space on the relevant drives.
- Consider both the installation destination and the location used for temporary extraction. The required space depends on the specific installer.
- Confirm that the intended destination drive is available and that you can write files there.
- If space is low, use Windows storage settings and cleanup recommendations to review options for freeing space.
Do not assume a fixed amount of free space will suit every installer. If the authorized installer still fails, consult the application publisher rather than making broad system changes.
3. Repair Windows system files only when appropriate
DISM and System File Checker can help when Windows component or protected system-file corruption is plausible. They do not verify or repair a third-party installer archive. Microsoft’s documented order is to run DISM first, then SFC.

- Search Start for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and wait for it to finish.
- Run sfc /scannow and allow the scan to reach 100%.
- Restart Windows and retry the installer if appropriate.
Microsoft Support explains that “The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files and replace corrupted files with a cached copy.” These commands address Windows files, not the cause of every installer unpacking error.
4. Avoid risky pseudo-fixes
- Do not download a replacement unarc.dll from an unverified DLL site.
- Do not broadly disable security protections as a routine fix.
- Do not buy RAM or a drive based only on this error message.
- Prefer the publisher’s documented verification and troubleshooting steps.
When to contact the publisher
If an authorized installer continues to fail after its verification check and basic storage and destination checks, contact the application publisher or distributor. Provide the full error text, code, application name, and verification result. Those details are more useful than treating the numeric code as a diagnosis.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. This lifecycle notice does not explain an unarc.dll error, but Windows 10 users should take it into account when planning ongoing security support.

Does unarc.dll returned an error code mean the DLL is missing?
No. The wording indicates an installer unpacking failure but does not prove that a Windows system DLL is missing. Do not download a replacement from an unverified DLL site.

What does unarc.dll error code -6 mean?
The reviewed sources do not establish a definitive meaning for code -6 or a universal mapping for other codes. Record the complete message and use the application publisher’s verification and troubleshooting guidance.
Should I run DISM and SFC to fix every unarc.dll error?
No. Microsoft documents DISM followed by SFC for Windows component and protected system-file repair. These commands do not validate or repair a third-party installer archive.

How much free space does an installer need?
It depends on the installer. Check the available space on the destination and consider the temporary extraction location as well.
