Windows 11 can use a touchscreen as a secondary monitor, but the setting is not in Settings > System > Display. Display Settings handles monitor layout and desktop mode; Tablet PC Settings assigns touch input to the correct screen.
Complete the setup in this order: make sure Windows detects the second display, extend the desktop, enable its touch device, and then run the touch-screen setup wizard.
1. Confirm that Windows detects the second monitor
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Look under Rearrange your displays. Both monitors should appear as numbered rectangles.
- Select Identify to show the number on each physical monitor.
- If the touchscreen is missing, expand Multiple displays and select Detect.
If Windows cannot detect the monitor as a display, fix that problem before configuring touch. The touch-assignment wizard cannot map touch input to a screen that Windows has not detected.
2. Set the monitors to Extend mode
Press Windows key + P, then select Extend. This places the desktop across both monitors instead of duplicating the same image or showing it on only one screen.

You can also arrange the monitors in Settings > System > Display. Drag the numbered rectangles so their positions match your physical setup, then select Apply if Windows displays that option.
3. Enable the touchscreen device
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Find HID-compliant touch screen.
- Right-click it and select Enable device.
If you see more than one HID-compliant touch screen entry, repeat the operation for each touchscreen device that should be active. If the context menu says Disable device instead, that entry is already enabled.
Detecting the monitor’s video signal is not enough. Windows must also detect the monitor’s touch interface as an HID device. A monitor can display the desktop normally while touch remains unavailable because these are separate hardware interfaces.
4. Assign touch input to the second monitor
- Open Control Panel.
- Change View by to Large icons.
- Select Tablet PC Settings.
- Open the Display tab.
- Under Configure, select Setup.
- If Windows asks which input type to configure, choose Touch input.
- Windows will show an identification prompt on one of the displays. Touch the physical touchscreen when the prompt appears there.
- If the prompt is on the wrong monitor, press Enter to move it to the next display. Continue pressing Enter until the prompt appears on the touchscreen, then touch that screen.
The prompt may say: “Tap this screen with a single finger to identify it as the touch screen. If this is not the Tablet PC screen, press Enter to move to the next screen.” The wording can vary slightly between Windows builds. Setup assigns the touch device to a monitor; it does not matter which monitor is currently the primary display.

Open Tablet PC Settings with a command
If you cannot find Tablet PC Settings in Control Panel, press Windows key + R, enter shell:::{80F3F1D5-FECA-45F3-BC32-752C152E456E}, and press Enter. Then open Display > Setup and repeat the touch-identification process.
5. Test the touchscreen
Move a window onto the second monitor and tap its title bar, buttons, or other controls. Touch should affect the touchscreen rather than the primary display.
You do not need to make the touchscreen the main display. The primary-display setting controls where Windows and some applications open by default; it does not perform touch mapping.
If touch is still assigned to the wrong screen
If tapping the touchscreen moves the pointer or activates controls on the primary monitor, Windows has probably detected the touch device but mapped it to the wrong display. Run Tablet PC Settings > Display > Setup again and use Enter to advance the identification prompt until it appears on the physical touchscreen.

If the setup wizard continues to respond to the wrong screen, temporarily make the touchscreen the primary display:
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select the touchscreen monitor’s numbered rectangle.
- Expand Multiple displays.
- Select Make this my main display.
- Open Tablet PC Settings and run Display > Setup again.
- Restore your original primary display afterward, if required.
This is a workaround for the setup wizard’s screen selection. It does not mean the touchscreen must remain the primary monitor.
When the touchscreen does not appear in Device Manager
If the monitor appears in Display Settings but there is no HID-compliant touch screen entry under Human Interface Devices, Windows has detected the display signal but not its touch interface. In that state, Tablet PC Settings has no touch device to assign.
Check the following:
- In Device Manager, look again under Human Interface Devices for an existing disabled touch-screen entry.
- In Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Disconnect and reconnect the touchscreen’s connections, then check Device Manager again.
- Restart Windows after the monitor and its touch device are connected.
- Install the touchscreen manufacturer’s current Windows 11 driver or firmware if the manufacturer provides one.
If Windows still does not create an HID touch-screen entry, the problem is device detection or the connection—not the monitor assignment step.

Do not use Calibration to assign the monitor
Calibration and Setup do different jobs:

Use calibration only after touch works on the correct monitor but taps are consistently offset from the controls. Open Control Panel > Tablet PC Settings > Display > Calibrate. Calibration will not move touch input from the primary monitor to the second monitor.
What if there are multiple touchscreen monitors?
Windows supports enabling multiple listed touch devices at the device level: repeat Enable device for every relevant HID-compliant touch screen entry. However, Windows’ standard touch-setup workflow does not provide a clearly guaranteed mapping procedure for multiple independent touchscreen monitors. Do not assume that enabling several HID entries automatically assigns each one to a particular display.
Touch assignment after sleep or hibernation
Some Windows 11 users report that touch mapping returns to the primary monitor after hibernation or resume. This is not a universal documented Windows defect, but it is a known reported behavior. If it happens, open Tablet PC Settings > Display > Setup and identify the touchscreen again. If necessary, use the temporary primary-display workaround described above.

Can I enable second-monitor touch from Settings > System > Display?
No. Display Settings detects, arranges, and configures the desktop across monitors. Use Device Manager to enable the touch device and Tablet PC Settings to assign touch input to the second monitor.

Does the touchscreen have to be the main display?
No. Touch mapping is performed with Tablet PC Settings > Display > Setup. Making the touchscreen the main display is only a temporary workaround if the setup prompt is being handled by the wrong monitor, or a preference for applications that open on the primary display.
Why does my monitor display video but not respond to touch?
Video detection and touch-device detection are separate. Confirm that an enabled HID-compliant touch screen entry appears under Device Manager > Human Interface Devices.
Should I calibrate the touchscreen first?
No. Use Setup to assign touch input to the correct display. Use Calibrate afterward only if touch is correctly assigned but the touch locations are inaccurate.
Is Tablet PC Settings removed from Windows 11?
