Windows has no built-in button to reset all mouse settings to default. To restore the Windows configuration you want, review and change the relevant settings individually; wireless-device, driver, touchpad, or manufacturer-software problems may need separate troubleshooting.
The steps differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10. Windows settings changes will not reset a vendor profile stored in the mouse or fix faulty hardware.
What “reset mouse settings” can mean
There are two different resets people commonly mean:
- Reset Windows mouse preferences: Review button, pointer, scrolling, and appearance settings and change them individually.
- Reset the physical mouse connection: Reconnect a wireless mouse or troubleshoot its power, receiver, cable, or sensor.
Resetting the physical mouse does not restore Windows settings. Likewise, changing Windows settings will not repair a dead battery, defective sensor, damaged cable, or a vendor profile stored in the mouse.

How to reset mouse settings in Windows 11
Windows 11 splits mouse controls between the modern Settings page, the classic Mouse Properties dialog, and Accessibility settings.
1. Review the main mouse settings
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Review Primary mouse button. Select Left unless you intentionally use the right button as the primary button.
- Review Mouse pointer speed and choose a position that suits you. Microsoft does not publish one universal slider position that applies to every Windows build and configuration.
- Review Enhance pointer precision. Turn it on or off according to your preferred pointer behavior; this is not a hardware repair.
- Under Scrolling, check the direction and number of lines used for scrolling, where those controls are available on your system.
Windows applies most changes immediately. If the page offers an explicit save control, use it before leaving the page.
2. Review button and pointer behavior in Mouse Properties
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Select Related settings > Additional mouse settings.
- On the Buttons tab, review Double-click speed. Move the Speed: slider to a comfortable position and test it using the folder icon.
- Clear Turn on ClickLock unless you deliberately use ClickLock to drag without holding the mouse button.
- Open the Pointer Options tab and review Enhance pointer precision, Automatically move pointer to the default button in a dialog box, Display pointer trails, Hide pointer while typing, and Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key.
- Open the Wheel tab. If your mouse supports horizontal scrolling, check Horizontal Scrolling and the number of characters entered there.
- Select OK to apply the changes.
Some applications might not support the automatic pointer-to-default-button feature, so its behavior can vary between programs.
3. Review the pointer scheme and appearance
- Open the classic dialog through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Related settings > Additional mouse settings.
- Open the Pointers tab and use the Scheme drop-down to select a pointer scheme.
- To replace an individual pointer, select it under Customize, choose Browse, select a pointer file, and choose Open.
- Select OK.
Pointer size and color are separate from the classic scheme. Change them at Start > Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch, using Mouse pointer style and Size.

How to reset mouse settings in Windows 10
Windows 10 uses different Settings labels from Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Mouse.
- Review Select your primary button and Cursor speed.
- Use the scrolling controls on that page to review wheel behavior.
- Choose Related settings > Additional mouse options.
- Review the Buttons, Pointer Options, Wheel, and Pointers tabs as described above.
- Choose OK when finished.
For pointer appearance, open Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Mouse pointer.

There is no universal set of Windows mouse defaults
Microsoft documents the controls and their locations, but it does not publish one universal list of values for pointer speed, double-click speed, wheel lines, pointer scheme, ClickLock, pointer trails, and every related option.

Claims such as “the Windows default is 6/11,” “set it to 10/20,” or “use 50 percent” should not be treated as universal reset instructions. The correct position can vary by Windows version, device, account, accessibility preference, and user configuration.
What not to use as a reset method
Registry deletion commands
Windows does not document a supported registry command that resets all mouse settings. Registry recipes may remove some stored values while leaving others unchanged, create new problems, or affect settings that were intentionally configured. They are not an official Windows reset procedure.
Control Panel’s Mouse dialog
The classic Mouse Properties dialog is useful, but it has no reset-all button. Opening it through Additional mouse settings or Additional mouse options only gives you access to the individual tabs.
Mouse Keys
Mouse Keys is an Accessibility feature, not a reset tool. In Windows 11, find it at Start > Settings > Accessibility > Mouse > Mouse keys. In Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Mouse > Control your mouse with a keypad. It lets the numeric keypad move the pointer; switching it on or off does not restore standard mouse preferences.

If the mouse still does not work correctly
Changing preferences will not fix every mouse problem. Work through these hardware and connection checks:
- Replace or recharge the batteries and check the mouse power switch.
- For a USB mouse, unplug it and connect it directly to another USB port. Bypass a USB hub while testing.
- For a wireless USB mouse, unplug the receiver, wait about 10 seconds, and reconnect it.
- If the mouse has a physical Reset button, use it only to disconnect and reconnect the wireless connection. It does not reset Windows pointer or button settings.
- Clean the sensor and check the cable, receiver, and connectors for damage.
- Test the mouse on another computer. If the same fault follows the mouse, the device is probably the cause.
- Check whether the manufacturer requires a driver or configuration utility.
Manufacturer utilities can override or supplement Windows settings with DPI levels, polling rates, macros, onboard profiles, and game-specific profiles. Resetting Windows settings does not necessarily reset those profiles; check the vendor’s application separately.
Mouse versus touchpad problems
A built-in touchpad is a separate troubleshooting category. Pointer movement, tapping, gestures, and palm-rejection behavior may be controlled by touchpad-specific settings or drivers. If the issue occurs only on the laptop touchpad, use Microsoft’s touchpad troubleshooting guidance rather than treating it as a standard external-mouse reset.

What is the default mouse speed in Windows?
There is no single Microsoft-published default value that applies universally to every Windows version and configuration. Avoid treating a specific slider position as an official default unless it is tied to a particular build and setup.
