It stores associations separately, so file types such as .pdf and .txt, and link types such as http, https, and mailto, can each point to different applications.
Use Settings for normal configuration, search for a specific file type or protocol when you know what to change, or use File Explorer for a file in front of you. The advanced Command Prompt tools assoc and ftype can inspect or alter legacy file associations.
1. Choose an app in Settings
This is the main Windows 11 method when you want to review several associations belonging to one application.
- Open Settings. You can also press Windows + I.
- Go to Apps > Default apps.
- Under Set defaults for applications, select the application you want to configure.
- Windows displays the file types and link types currently associated with that app.
- Select the file type or link type you want to change, choose the preferred application, and select Set default if Windows displays the confirmation.
For example, selecting a PDF reader lets you configure .pdf. Selecting a browser exposes browser-related file and link associations, but those associations may still need to be handled individually.

Set a browser as the default
For a browser such as Microsoft Edge, open Settings > Apps > Default apps and select Microsoft Edge. Beside Make Microsoft Edge your default browser, select Set default.
Do not assume that choosing an app automatically changes every association it supports. Formats such as .pdf and .html, and protocols such as http and https, may need separate attention unless the app provides a browser-specific Set default button.
2. Search for the extension or protocol first
This approach is quicker when you already know exactly what needs to change. It is useful for a single format such as .txt or a link handler such as mailto.
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Use the search box on the Default apps page.
- Enter the file extension, including the leading period—for example, .txt—or enter a protocol such as http, https, or mailto.
- Select the matching result.
- Choose the application that should open that file type or link type.

Changing .html does not establish that http and https have also changed. If links still open in the old browser, search for those protocols separately.
If you cannot see the extension
File Explorer may hide filename extensions by default. To display them, open a folder and select View > Show > File name extensions. You can then tell whether a file is really .pdf, .txt, .jpg, or another type.

This matters because an apparently ordinary document may have an unexpected extension. Windows configures the association for the actual extension, not the one you assume it has.
3. Use File Explorer’s Open with menu
When you are looking at a particular file, File Explorer provides a direct way to change the application for that file type.

- Open File Explorer and locate the file.
- Right-click it.
- Select Open with > Choose another app.
- Select the application you want to use.
- If Windows displays a default-setting confirmation, select the option to use that app for this file type.
This changes the association for the selected file’s extension. It does not configure every format or protocol supported by the application. Choosing an editor for a .txt file does not automatically make it the handler for .rtf, .log, or other text-related extensions.
When the application is not listed
The app picker offers two alternatives:
- Choose Search the Microsoft Store to look for an application advertised as compatible with the file type. A suitable app is not guaranteed to be available.
- Choose Choose an app on your PC to browse to an installed executable. A portable or poorly registered application may open the current file without creating a complete association for future files.
Renaming report.txt to report.pdf changes only the filename extension. It does not convert the contents into a valid PDF and may make the file harder to identify.
4. Inspect or change associations with Command Prompt
assoc and ftype are legacy, advanced commands. They operate on extension and file-type associations, not on the complete modern Default apps configuration. Use Settings when you need to configure browser protocols or review all associations for an application.
Inspect an extension
Open Command Prompt (cmd.exe) and run:
assoc .txt
A result such as .txt=txtfile means that the .txt extension is linked to the file type named txtfile.

Inspect the command behind a file type
Pass that file type to ftype:
ftype txtfile
A typical result looks like this:
txtfile=%SystemRoot%\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE %1
The %1 placeholder is replaced by the file being opened.
Assign an extension to an existing file type
If a suitable file type already exists, associate an extension with it:
assoc .log=txtfile
This associates .log with txtfile. It does not create a new application registration.
Define the command used to open a file type
You can define an open command with ftype:
ftype MyTextFile="%ProgramFiles%\Example App\Example.exe" "%1"
The general form is:
ftype [filetype[=opencommandstring]]
The command string can use %0 or %1 for the launched filename, %* for all parameters, and %2 through %9 for additional parameters. Quoting is important when an executable path contains spaces.
Remove an association
To remove an extension association, use an empty value. Microsoft’s syntax requires a space after the equals sign; the trailing space is easy to miss:

assoc .bak=
To delete the open command string for a file type, run:
ftype example=
Run the commands correctly from PowerShell
assoc and ftype are cmd.exe commands, not native PowerShell commands. From PowerShell, call them through Command Prompt:
cmd /c assoc .txt
cmd /c ftype txtfile
Microsoft documents these commands for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Administrator privileges are required to make changes with assoc. Because command-line edits can produce unexpected results, inspect the current association first and use Settings for ordinary configuration.
Which method should you use?

For most Windows 11 users, start with Settings > Apps > Default apps. Use File Explorer when the file is already in front of you, and reserve assoc and ftype for troubleshooting or controlled administrative work.

Why does changing the default app not change every file type?
Windows stores associations individually. A program selected for .pdf may not become the handler for .docx, and changing .html does not automatically change the http and https protocols.
How do I make Chrome, Edge, or another browser the default in Windows 11?
Open Settings > Apps > Default apps, select the browser, and use its browser-specific Set default button when it is shown. Check individual protocols or file types if a particular link or document still opens elsewhere.

Can I change a default app from File Explorer?
Yes. Right-click a file, select Open with > Choose another app, select the application, and accept the option to use it for that file type if Windows displays one.
Why can’t I find the file extension in Settings or File Explorer?
The extension may be hidden in File Explorer. Select View > Show > File name extensions to display it, then search for the exact extension, including the leading period.
Are assoc and ftype PowerShell commands?
No. They are documented as cmd.exe commands. From PowerShell, run them through Command Prompt, for example, cmd /c assoc .txt.
Does renaming a file from .txt to .pdf convert it?
No. Renaming changes only the filename extension. It does not convert the file’s contents into another format.
