Discord Canary is Discord’s desktop Alpha testing channel, not its Beta channel; the desktop Beta channel is PTB (Public Test Build). Canary gives users early access to untested changes, but it is Discord’s most unstable release channel, so it is best for previewing features or reproducing bugs rather than dependable everyday use.
Canary is useful if you want to preview changes, test Discord on your hardware, or submit well-documented bug reports. It is a poor choice if Discord is essential for work, classes, moderation, or reliable voice chat.
What is Discord Canary?
Discord Canary is an early-access version of the Discord client. It uses your normal Discord account and provides the familiar servers, direct messages, voice channels, video calls, and other core Discord functions. It is not a separate Discord service and does not require a special account.
The important distinction is its release channel. Discord describes its channels as follows:

Therefore, calling Canary “Discord’s beta version” is inaccurate. People often use “beta” informally to mean any preview software, but Discord’s own terminology identifies Canary as Alpha and PTB as Beta.
What can you do with Canary?
Canary retains normal Discord functionality while exposing early-access changes. You can log in, join servers, send messages, use voice channels, and test features in your ordinary account environment.
However, Discord does not guarantee that Canary receives every feature before PTB or Stable, nor that a feature seen in Canary will eventually ship to everyone. It is an early-access channel, not a promise of a particular feature-release order.
Typical reasons to install it include:
- Previewing changes before they reach the standard client.
- Checking whether a new Discord build works with your operating system, graphics hardware, microphone, or camera.
- Reproducing a bug that does not occur in Stable or PTB.
- Helping Discord identify problems through a properly prepared bug report.
How to install Discord Canary
You do not need to join Discord Testers to download Canary or report a Canary problem. The official Discord testing-client documentation provides these current options.
Browser Canary
- Open canary.discord.com.
- Select Open Discord.
Browser Canary is separate from the downloadable desktop Canary application. A browser session can therefore behave differently from the desktop client because of browser extensions, browser updates, permissions, or graphics settings.
Windows
Discord currently lists a 64-bit Canary installer for Windows:

The current testing-client documentation does not list a 32-bit Windows Canary installer.

iPhone and iPad
iOS does not use a Canary-branded app. Discord identifies iOS early access as TestFlight.
- Install Apple’s TestFlight app.
- Open Discord’s TestFlight signup link: dis.gd/testflight.
- Follow TestFlight’s installation instructions if a testing place is available.
To leave iOS testing, open TestFlight, select Discord, scroll down, and tap Stop Testing!. You can then install the Stable Discord app from the App Store.
Android
Android uses Beta and Alpha labels rather than the Canary name. Android Beta is accessed through Google Play’s beta enrollment process. Android Alpha requires joining Discord’s Google Group and then joining the testing program at play.google.com/apps/testing/com.discord.

Canary versus Discord PTB
PTB is the closer match for what many people mean when they say “Discord beta.” It is a public test build intended to have more bugs than Stable without normally preventing everyday use. Canary is one step further toward the experimental end of the release process.

Choose PTB when you want to try preview software but still depend on Discord regularly. Choose Canary when you are comfortable with crashes, broken features, temporary regressions, and troubleshooting.
How to check that you are running Canary
Do not rely only on the application icon. Discord provides the client string in User Settings:
- Click the cogwheel in the bottom-left corner.
- Scroll to the bottom-left of User Settings.
- Click the displayed version information to copy it.
The copied string includes the release channel, build number, commit identifier, host version, architecture, and operating system. For example:
stable 297274 (a779dec) Host 0.0.305 arm64 macOS 14 (23.1.0)
On a Canary installation, the channel portion should identify Canary rather than Stable. Include this complete string in a bug report instead of sending only a screenshot of the app.
What problems should you expect?
Discord explicitly describes Canary as its most unstable testing channel and says users run it at their own risk. Possible problems include a feature failing to load, voice or video regressions, crashes, login issues, visual glitches, and a change that works in one operating system but not another.

Discord also does not support certain bug-report situations:
- Running Stable, PTB, and Canary simultaneously on the same device for the purpose of reporting a bug.
- Problems caused by client modifications such as BetterDiscord or BeautifulDiscord.
- A problem that occurs only inside a virtual machine and cannot be reproduced on real hardware.
- Issues caused by developer-environment browsers or Nightly/Alpha browser builds when the browser update itself broke Discord.
- Reports from Amazon tablets, Kindle, ChromeOS, or a mobile browser.
- Issues that last only about a second, require spam-pressing a button, or require an extremely long or complex reproduction sequence.
How to report a Canary bug properly
You can report bugs without joining the Discord Testers server. Discord currently describes that server as invite-only, and the opportunity to be considered for membership is unavailable. Testers membership is separate from installing Canary.
Collect the client information
Use User Settings → version information to copy the complete client string. This identifies the channel, build, operating system, architecture, and related version details.

- Click the bottom-left cogwheel to open User Settings.
- Select Voice & Video.
- Open the Debugging tab.
- Turn on Debug Logging.
- Reproduce the problem.
- Return to User Settings → Voice & Video → Debugging.
- Under Debug Logging, select Upload.
Reproduce the bug before uploading. Logs collected without reproducing the failure may not contain the relevant event.
On mobile, use You → cogwheel → Support → Upload Debug Logs to Discord Support.
Submit the report
- Open Discord’s Support form.
- Under What can we help you with?, select Bug Reporting.
- Complete the form and select Submit.
Discord’s required or relevant report information includes:
- Description: what went wrong.
- Steps to Reproduce: the shortest reliable sequence.
- Expected Results: what should have happened.
- Actual Results: what happened instead.
- Discord Client Info: the copied version string.
- Debug Logs: uploaded after reproducing the bug.
- Attachments: screenshots or a directly attached screen recording where useful.
Do not submit a link to cloud storage for a screen recording. Discord Support says it will not open online-storage links for these recordings; attach the file directly to the report.

If the built-in upload does not work, Discord documents these desktop locations:

Replace *username* with your Windows account name.
Is Discord Canary worth installing?
Canary is worthwhile for users who specifically want early access or are willing to help test Discord. It is also practical for diagnosing a suspected release-channel regression: if a problem appears in Canary but not Stable, the channel and build information give Discord a useful starting point.
For most people, Stable is the sensible default. PTB is the better compromise if you want preview features with fewer disruptions. Canary makes sense only when the benefit of testing the newest client outweighs the possibility that messaging, voice, video, or the client itself may temporarily fail.

Is Discord Canary the Beta version?
