ChatGPT can translate text or spoken exchanges when you ask for a translation in an ordinary chat; there is no special translation command or dedicated translation button. Name the source and target languages and specify the tone, formatting, and other requirements. Changing the ChatGPT interface language is optional and does not determine the language of the translation.
Translate text with a direct prompt
Open a new ChatGPT conversation and paste the text you want translated. Then identify the target language and any requirements.
For example:
Translate the following Spanish text into natural English. Keep the paragraph breaks and do not summarize it:

ChatGPT can usually infer the source language, but naming it removes ambiguity and makes the request easier to audit.
Choose the type of translation you need
“Accurate” can mean different things. Add one of these instructions to control the result:

| Formal writing | Use a formal, professional tone suitable for a business email. |

| Preserve formatting | Keep the headings, bullet points, line breaks, and numbering unchanged. |
| Explain difficult wording | Give the translation first, then explain idioms and culturally specific phrases. |
| Compare alternatives | Provide two translations: one literal and one natural, and explain the main difference. |
Use a two-step translation check
For important content, ask ChatGPT to translate and then inspect its own result. This does not guarantee correctness, but it can expose omissions, unclear names, and inconsistent terminology.

- Ask ChatGPT to list uncertain phrases, idioms, proper names, numbers, dates, and words that could have more than one meaning.
- Ask it to compare the translation against the source and identify anything omitted or added.
- Review the result yourself or have a qualified human translator check it before using it publicly.
A useful prompt is:
Translate the text into German. After the translation, provide a short quality check listing ambiguous phrases, idioms and their intended meaning, names, numbers, dates, and units to verify, and any information you could not translate confidently.
Keep terminology consistent
ChatGPT may translate the same technical term differently in different places. Give it a glossary when consistency matters, such as for software documentation, product descriptions, or legal material.
Translate this user guide from English to Japanese. Use these terms consistently: account = アカウント; workspace = ワークスペース; dashboard = ダッシュボード; sign in = サインイン. Do not translate product names, URLs, code, or text inside backticks.
If you are working through a long document, send it in labeled sections and repeat the key terminology rules. Ask ChatGPT to translate only the new section while following the established glossary.
Translate an email without changing its meaning
Emails need more than word substitution. The translation must preserve the sender’s intent, level of politeness, and requests.
Translate this English email into business Spanish. Keep the meaning and level of politeness. Do not add promises or information that are not in the original. Preserve the greeting, sign-off, names, dates, and bullet points.

Afterward, ask:
Does this Spanish email sound natural and appropriately formal for a customer? Show any sentence where the tone or meaning could be misunderstood, then provide a corrected version.
Ask for back-translation
Back-translation means translating the result into the original language to see whether the meaning has shifted. It is useful for short announcements, instructions, and messages where a small change could cause confusion.

Back-translation is a review aid, not proof that the translation is correct. If both steps repeat the same mistake, the problem may remain hidden.
Translate text from an image or document
If your ChatGPT account and app support file or image input, attach the item and state exactly what should be translated. Be specific about whether you want all visible text or only selected content.
Translate all visible Korean text in this image into English. Preserve the order of the labels. Ignore logos, serial numbers, and decorative text. Mark anything that is too blurry to read as [unclear].

For a document, specify what must remain unchanged:
Translate the attached document from Portuguese to English. Preserve headings, numbered lists, dates, currency amounts, URLs, and table structure. Do not summarize. If any text is unreadable, identify its page and location.
Check extracted text carefully. A scan can contain blurred characters, unusual fonts, handwriting, or layout elements that are easy to misread. Verify names, addresses, account numbers, prices, and legal wording against the original.
Use ChatGPT for conversational translation
ChatGPT can translate individual messages in a continuing conversation. Establish the rules once, then paste each message as it arrives.

You are my translation assistant. Translate each message I send from English to Mexican Spanish. Return only the translation unless I ask for an explanation. Keep names, emojis, URLs, and line breaks unchanged. Use polite but natural wording.
To reverse the direction, say:

For a conversation between two people, label the speakers:
Translate this dialogue into French. Keep the speaker labels and make the two speakers sound natural and distinct:

Use Voice for spoken translation
ChatGPT Voice works inside a normal chat. You can ask it to translate spoken content and speak its response while text appears in the conversation. You can ask it to use a different language without changing the Voice language setting for every translation request. Voice options and features can vary by plan, workspace settings, region, and app version.
Start a Voice conversation and give it an instruction such as:
Translate everything I say in English into Japanese. Speak the Japanese translation aloud, then show it in the chat. Do not answer the content or add commentary.

Act as an interpreter between English and German. When you hear English, speak German. When you hear German, speak English. Translate faithfully and wait for the speaker to finish before responding.
The Voice language setting is at Settings → Voice → Language. OpenAI says selecting the language spoken most often can improve speech recognition accuracy. This is separate from the dictation language setting at Settings → Speech → Main Language, which is the documented setting to adjust when voice input or dictation detects the wrong language.

On iOS and Android, tap the cc button in the upper-right corner of Voice mode to show captions for model responses. After you exit Voice, the transcription is added to the current text conversation and can be reviewed later. Voice transcripts may not exactly match what was spoken, so check them before relying on a translation.
Fix incorrect voice-language detection
Voice or dictation can detect the wrong language. For dictation, OpenAI recommends selecting the preferred language under Settings → Speech → Main Language. You can also try these steps:
- State the input and output languages explicitly in the conversation.
- Speak in shorter turns and pause between speakers.
- Ask ChatGPT to repeat the recognized source text before translating it.
- Check the transcript rather than assuming it is a word-for-word record.
For example:
Before translating, write down exactly what you think I said in English. If you are uncertain about a word, mark it with [unclear] instead of guessing.
Set up a reusable translation style with Custom Instructions
If you translate frequently, Custom Instructions can apply the same preferences across chats. On the web or desktop app, open Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions and turn on Enable customization. On iOS or Android, open Settings → Customize ChatGPT and turn on the same setting. Custom Instructions apply across chats, including existing conversations, and can be edited or deleted for future conversations.
You could add instructions such as:
When I ask for a translation: identify the source and target language if I have not provided them; preserve names, URLs, numbers, dates, units, and formatting; use natural wording unless I request a literal translation; do not summarize or omit content; flag ambiguous phrases rather than silently guessing; and return only the translation unless I ask for notes.
Custom Instructions apply broadly, so avoid putting one-off requirements or sensitive information there.
Change the ChatGPT interface language when useful
Changing the interface language is optional. It changes menus and controls, not the language ChatGPT must use in its translation response.
On the web, sign in and go to Profile icon → Settings → General → Language, then choose a language. In the mobile app, open the sidebar, tap the profile icon at the bottom, choose Language under App, and select the language you want. ChatGPT may automatically match a supported browser or device language.

ChatGPT can make mistakes. Treat the output as a draft when the text involves legal rights, medical instructions, immigration, contracts, financial transactions, safety procedures, or official applications. Have a qualified translator or fluent subject-matter expert review it.
Pay particular attention to:
- negation, warnings, and conditional statements;
- dates, time zones, currencies, decimal separators, and measurements;
- names, addresses, identification numbers, and account details;
- formal titles and culturally specific forms of address;
- idioms, humor, sarcasm, and wording that could be interpreted as a promise;
- technical terms that have a precise meaning in your industry.
When a prompt includes “today,” “tomorrow,” or another relative date, provide the actual date and relevant time zone. Voice uses the device or browser time zone when interpreting relative dates, so a wrong or missing time zone can change the meaning.

A practical translation prompt template
Copy and adapt this template:
Translate the text below from [source language] into [target language]. Purpose/audience: [for example, a customer email or travel conversation]. Style: [literal, natural, formal, casual, technical]. Requirements: preserve [formatting/names/URLs/HTML/code/placeholders]; keep all numbers, dates, units, and currency amounts unchanged unless conversion is requested; do not add, remove, or summarize information; flag ambiguous wording after the translation.

Do I need a special translation command in ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI’s help documentation does not specify a special /translate command or dedicated translation button. Enter a natural-language request, name the source and target languages, and paste or attach the content.
Do I have to change ChatGPT’s interface language before translating?
No. The interface language and response language are separate. You can leave the menus in their current language and ask ChatGPT to translate into another language.
Can ChatGPT translate speech in real time?
You can use Voice in a normal chat and ask ChatGPT to translate spoken content into another language. Voice transcripts may not exactly match what was said, so confirm important names, numbers, and instructions.

Voice or dictation may misidentify a language. For dictation, OpenAI documents Settings → Speech → Main Language as the preferred language setting. State the languages in your prompt and check the transcript.
Can I make ChatGPT always translate in the same style?
Yes. Add recurring translation rules under Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions on web or desktop, or Settings → Customize ChatGPT on iOS and Android. Turn on Enable customization and remember that the rules apply across chats.
Is ChatGPT suitable for legal or medical translation?
It can help produce a draft, but an unreviewed model translation should not be treated as authoritative for legal, medical, safety-critical, immigration, or official material. Use a qualified human reviewer.
Can ChatGPT preserve formatting during translation?
Often, but you should request it explicitly. Tell ChatGPT to preserve headings, lists, table structure, line breaks, placeholders, URLs, code, and other elements that must not change, then compare the output with the source.
