Outlook does not combine a conversation’s attachments into one collection, so check earlier replies as well as the latest message.
Steps vary by Outlook version. Use the section for New Outlook or Outlook on the web, or for Classic Outlook for Windows.
How Outlook handles conversation attachments
Outlook groups related messages into a conversation, but an attachment stays with the message it was sent in. A paperclip or attachment card indicates a file on a particular message; it does not mean every message in the thread has an attachment.
View attachments in New Outlook or Outlook on the web
Turn on conversation grouping
- Select Settings, then go to Mail > Layout.
- Under Message organization, select Show email grouped by conversation.
- Under Arrange the reading pane, choose Newest on top, Newest on bottom, or Show each message separately.
Microsoft may roll out interface changes over time, so labels or locations can vary slightly.

Open and inspect messages
- Return to the message list and select the conversation.
- Select each message you want to inspect.
- Scroll through the message and look for the attachment file name or attachment card. Check earlier replies as well as the latest one.
- Select the attachment’s drop-down arrow and choose Preview or Open, when available.
Not every file type supports preview. If preview is unavailable, open the file with an appropriate application or save it first. Outlook may use your computer’s default browser to open or preview some file types. For example, PDFs may open in Microsoft Edge when it is your default PDF-handling browser. Save an attachment
- Select the attachment’s drop-down arrow.
- Choose Save As to save it to a computer or cloud-storage location, or choose Save to OneDrive if that option is available.
View attachments in Classic Outlook for Windows
Expand the conversation and open a message
- Open a mail folder such as Inbox.
- Select View > Show as Conversations, then choose All mailboxes or This folder.
- Select the triangular expand/collapse icon beside the conversation.
- Select the message containing the attachment. Read it in the Reading Pane or double-click it to open a separate message window.
If the Reading Pane is hidden, turn it on using View > Layout > Reading Pane and choose Right or Bottom. For more details, see Microsoft’s Reading Pane instructions.

Open, preview, or save the file
- Double-click an attachment to open it.
- To preview without opening the associated application, use the attachment’s drop-down control and choose Preview, where available.
- To save it, select the attachment and use Attachments > Save As, or right-click it and choose Save As.
Preview availability depends on the file type and previewer settings. Microsoft’s attachment guidance explains the available controls.
Find messages with attachments
New Outlook or Outlook on the web
- Select the Search box and enter a sender name, file name, or keyword.
- Select Files to narrow results to messages containing files, or use the filter button and select Attachments.
- Alternatively, select Sort > Has files in the message list.
These options help find messages with attachments; they do not create a combined view of every file in a conversation. See Microsoft’s instructions to find messages with attachments.

Classic Outlook
- Select the Search box above the message list.
- Enter hasattachments:yes and press Enter.
- Use the search-scope menu, such as Current Mailbox, if you need to change where Outlook searches.
Outlook searches the current folder or mailbox according to the selected scope. See Microsoft’s attachment-search instructions.
If an attachment seems to be missing

FAQ
Can I view every attachment in an Outlook conversation in one place?
Outlook does not combine conversation attachments into a single collection. Expand the conversation and inspect each message that may contain a file.
Why is an attachment missing from the latest reply?
Replies do not automatically include the original attachment. Open the earlier message that contained it. Microsoft says to use Forward if you need to send the original attachment along; Reply and Reply All do not include it automatically. See Microsoft’s reply and forward instructions.

How do I search for emails with attachments?
In New Outlook or Outlook on the web, search and narrow results with Files or the Attachments filter, or choose Sort > Has files. In Classic Outlook, search for hasattachments:yes.
Why is Preview missing?
Preview depends on the file type and available previewers. Open the file with a compatible application or save it first. In Classic Outlook, check the Attachment Handling and Attachment and Document Previewers settings in the Trust Center.
What if a message is not included in the conversation?
Search by sender, file name, or keyword. A changed subject, forwarded copy, or altered threading information can keep a related message outside the visible thread. In Classic Outlook, also enable View > Conversation Settings > Show Messages from Other Folders.
Is it safe to open an attachment Outlook blocks?
Do not bypass a security block or open an untrusted file. Ask the sender to share it another way, such as a OneDrive link or compressed archive, if allowed by your organization’s policy.
