Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can enable legacy Ray Tracing on an existing Minecraft Bedrock world, but only on a compatible Windows 64-bit PC with a hardware ray-tracing-capable GPU and a suitable PBR resource pack. Apply the pack to the world, then select the ray-traced graphics mode in the game’s video controls. This is separate from Java Edition and from the newer Vibrant Visuals mode.
What you need before enabling Ray Tracing
Check these requirements first. If one is missing, the Ray Tracing option may not appear.
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Edition | Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, not Java Edition |
| Operating system | Windows 64-bit on PC |
| Graphics card | A DirectX hardware ray-tracing-capable GPU, such as an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 Series or newer, or an AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series or newer |
| Memory | At least 8 GB of RAM is recommended |
| Processor | An Intel Core i5-equivalent CPU is recommended |
| Game version | Microsoft’s original documented minimum is Bedrock version 1.16.200 or later. Update the game before troubleshooting current behavior. |
These requirements come from Microsoft’s Ray Tracing getting-started documentation. A compatible GPU alone is not enough: the world also needs a resource pack designed for ray tracing.
Why a normal texture pack will not enable RTX
A conventional texture pack changes the appearance of blocks but does not automatically provide the material information required by the ray-tracing pipeline. An RTX pack needs PBR data, such as information describing how surfaces reflect light or appear rough.

Use a pack that explicitly supports Ray Tracing, RTX, or Bedrock PBR materials. Microsoft’s current documentation identifies the ray-tracing capability with:
“capabilities”: [“raytracing”]
A pack made only for newer Vibrant Visuals capabilities should not be assumed to work in legacy Ray Traced mode: Microsoft says those newer capabilities are not backwards-compatible with the RTX pipeline. Conversely, RTX packs using the raytracing capability can work with Vibrant Visuals, though they may not support every newer PBR feature. See Microsoft’s Vibrant Visuals documentation.
How to enable Ray Tracing on an existing world
-
Install a compatible RTX resource pack. Import the Bedrock pack using its .mcpack file, or install it through its source. Confirm it is intended for ray tracing and includes PBR materials.
-
Open the world-editing screen. From the Minecraft main screen, select Play. Find the world you want to change and select its pencil-shaped Edit icon.

There is no command to turn on Ray Tracing
Ray Tracing is not enabled with a Minecraft command. There is no documented /raytracing command or equivalent. Commands such as /gamerule affect gameplay rules, not the renderer.
Activation depends on three things working together:
- a supported Windows Bedrock installation;
- a compatible DirectX hardware ray-tracing GPU; and
- a world with a recognized ray-tracing/PBR resource pack.
What to do if the Ray Tracing option is missing
The option is greyed out or does not appear
Check that you are running Bedrock on Windows rather than Java Edition or another Bedrock platform. Verify that the GPU supports hardware ray tracing and that the correct graphics drivers are installed.

Next, return to the world’s Edit → Resource Packs screen. A normal texture pack will not activate RTX. Apply a pack that explicitly supports ray tracing and PBR materials. Restart Minecraft after importing the pack if the graphics option still does not appear.
The pack appears, but the world looks unchanged
Make sure the pack is active for the specific world you opened. Installing a pack does not necessarily apply it to every existing world. Also check that another pack is not overriding its textures or material files.
Multiple RTX/PBR packs can conflict. NVIDIA’s documented workflow warns that multiple active packs can cause errors, visual glitches, or lower-resolution textures if memory use becomes excessive. Test with one RTX pack enabled before adding others.
The pack keeps disappearing after you leave
Apply it again from the world-editing screen and use Save & Quit rather than force-closing the game. Also check for Bedrock updates. The Bedrock 26.0 changelog records fixes for global resource packs not applying after leaving Settings and for graphics-mode options changing after updates. If a pack still fails to persist, reapply it and restart the game.
Screenshots or textures look wrong after switching modes
Exit and relaunch the game, then recheck the active pack and graphics mode. The Bedrock 26.0 changelog records fixes for textures not reloading correctly when changing graphics modes from the main menu and for inaccurate screenshots in Ray Traced mode. If the problem began after an update, reapplying the pack and restarting is a useful first test.
Ray Tracing versus Vibrant Visuals
Microsoft says legacy Ray Tracing has been largely superseded by Vibrant Visuals. They are related but separate graphics modes. Vibrant Visuals uses a newer rendering pipeline and is available on a broader range of compatible Bedrock devices.

Vibrant Visuals can be applied to existing worlds and does not change gameplay. It can also be used on Realms when other players do not enable it. It does not support local split-screen; when multiple local players join, Minecraft switches to Fancy or Simple rendering.
The current graphics controls can include Favor Visuals, Favor Performance, and Vibrant Visuals Options. Use those controls if your device supports Vibrant Visuals but does not meet the hardware requirements for legacy RTX.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need an official RTX Marketplace world?
No. An official RTX world is one convenient way to see the effect, but it is not the only route. A compatible PBR resource pack can be applied to an ordinary Bedrock world through that world’s editing screen.
The world itself does not magically become ray-traced. The graphics mode and active resource pack provide the rendering support. Without the pack’s ray-tracing data, owning an RTX graphics card will not transform a standard world.

FAQ
Can I enable Ray Tracing in Minecraft Java Edition?
No. Microsoft’s documented RTX feature is for Minecraft Bedrock Edition on Windows 64-bit PCs. Java Edition uses different graphics and shader solutions.
Can I enable RTX on Xbox, PlayStation, Android, or iPhone?
Not the legacy RTX mode described here. Microsoft’s RTX requirements specify Windows PC hardware with DirectX hardware ray tracing. Those platforms may support Vibrant Visuals instead, depending on device compatibility.
Will any texture pack activate Ray Tracing?
No. The pack must contain PBR data and identify itself as ray-tracing-capable. A standard texture pack only changes textures.
Can I turn on Ray Tracing with a command?
No. There is no documented Minecraft command for it. Apply a compatible resource pack to the world and select the graphics mode in the video settings.
Why is Vibrant Visuals available but Ray Tracing is not?
They are separate rendering pipelines. Vibrant Visuals supports more Bedrock devices, while legacy Ray Tracing requires Windows and a DirectX hardware ray-tracing GPU, as well as a compatible RTX/PBR pack.
Will enabling RTX change my world or gameplay?
The graphics mode changes rendering, not the world’s gameplay rules. Consider backing up an important world before testing unofficial resource packs.
The Bottom Line
To enable legacy Ray Tracing on an existing Bedrock world, use Windows Bedrock with a supported hardware ray-tracing GPU, install an RTX/PBR resource pack, then apply it through Play → Edit world → Resource Packs → My Packs → Activate. Select the ray-traced graphics mode afterward and save with Save & Quit.
If you are on another Bedrock platform—or your PC does not support hardware RTX—try Settings → Video → Graphics Mode → Vibrant Visuals instead. It is the broader Bedrock visual-upgrade option, but it is not the same mode as legacy Ray Tracing.
