Before choosing a fixed default, turn off Let Windows manage my default printer. Otherwise, Windows may switch the default to the last printer you used.
Set the default printer in Windows 11
These instructions apply to supported Windows 11 releases, including 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1.
- Open Start and select Settings. You can also press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Under Printer preferences, turn Let Windows manage my default printer Off.
- Select the printer you want to use by default.
- Select Set as default.
Check beneath the printer name. Printer status: Default confirms that Windows saved the change.

Why “Set as default” is missing
The Set as default button may not appear while Let Windows manage my default printer is enabled. Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, turn that option off, select the printer again, and choose Set as default.
Let Windows choose your last-used printer
If you regularly move between home, work, and mobile locations, Windows can automatically select the printer you used most recently.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Under Printer preferences, turn Let Windows manage my default printer On.
With this setting enabled, Windows can change the default after you print to another device. On mobile Windows devices, it may also change when you move to a different location and Windows identifies the last printer used there.
Set the default printer in Windows 10
Windows 10 has a different Settings layout. Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, but the operating system still works and retains these printer settings.
- Select Start > Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Clear Let Windows manage my default printer.
- Select the printer you want to use.
- Select Manage.
- Under Printer status, select Set as default.
The printer’s status changes to Default. If the button is missing, confirm that Let Windows manage my default printer is cleared.
If your printer is not listed
You must install a printer before Windows can make it the default.

Add a printer in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Under Add a printer & scanner, select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for available printers.
- When your printer appears, select Add device next to it.
If discovery fails, select The printer that I want isn’t listed, then select Add a new device manually in the Add Printer window.

To check whether the computer uses ARM, open Settings > System > About and look under Device specifications > System type.
Set the default printer from Command Prompt
The Windows prnmngr script can list installed printers, show the current default, and set a new default. Open Command Prompt and run the commands below. For an English U.S. installation, the script is normally in %WINDIR%\System32\printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\.
Show the current default printer
cscript %WINDIR%\System32\printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\prnmngr.vbs -g
List installed printers
cscript %WINDIR%\System32\printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\prnmngr.vbs -l
Set a printer as default
cscript %WINDIR%\System32\printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\prnmngr.vbs -t -p “Printer Name”

Replace Printer Name with the exact name shown by the listing command. The -t option sets the default specified with -p; -g gets the current default, and -l lists printers.
If the en-US folder does not exist, use the language-specific folder under %WINDIR%\System32\printing_Admin_Scripts\ that matches the Windows installation.
Set the default printer with PowerShell
The printer must already be installed, and its name must match the installed printer name exactly.
Set it directly by name

These commands are useful for scripting printer setup on several PCs. The printer must be available to the Windows user running the command.
Fix common default-printer and printing problems
Windows keeps changing the default
Let Windows manage my default printer is probably enabled. Turn it off at Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, then select the required printer and choose Set as default.

The printer is installed but offline
- Confirm that the printer is powered on.
- For a wireless printer, confirm that it is on the same Wi-Fi network as the PC.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > [printer] > Open print queue.
- Cancel stuck jobs by selecting the … menu and choosing Cancel all.
- Make sure Pause Printing and Use Printer Offline are not selected in the queue window.
Restart the Print Spooler
The Print Spooler manages the Windows print queue. Restart it when jobs remain stuck or Windows loses communication with an otherwise available printer.
- Select taskbar Search.
- Type services and open Services.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
The printer is detected but features are missing
Windows may have installed a basic driver. Check Windows Update for a newer printer driver, Microsoft’s preferred source when one is available. A basic driver can allow printing while omitting features such as scanning, duplex options, special paper settings, or ink-level reporting.
Reinstall a printer that disappeared
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Select Remove, then select Yes if prompted.
- Return to Printers & scanners and select Add device.
- Complete setup, then set the reinstalled printer as the default.
Removing and adding the printer again refreshes its connection, driver association, and Windows printer configuration.
Commands and advice that do not do what you expect
- The legacy print command does not set the Windows default. Its /d:<printername> option sends a text file to a specified printer for that command; it does not change the system default. Use prnmngr.vbs -t -p or the PowerShell default-printer method instead.
- Set-Printer does not set the default printer. It changes an existing printer’s configuration, such as its driver, port, sharing, or print-job settings. Use WScript.Network.SetDefaultPrinter() or the Win32_Printer SetDefaultPrinter method.
- Control Panel is not the best starting point for current Windows 11 instructions. The older Control Panel > Devices and Printers interface may still be available, but the supported Settings path is Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.

Why can’t I see Set as default in Windows 11?
Turn off Let Windows manage my default printer under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. Select the printer again, and the Set as default option should appear.

How do I stop Windows from changing my default printer?
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, turn Let Windows manage my default printer off, and manually select the printer you want.
Can I set a default printer from Command Prompt?
Yes. Run cscript %WINDIR%\System32\printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\prnmngr.vbs -t -p “Printer Name”, replacing the quoted name with the exact installed printer name.
