To start a new line in a Microsoft Teams chat without sending your draft, place the cursor in the compose box and press Shift+Enter on Windows or web, or Shift+Return on Mac. Type the next line, then select Send when the message is ready.
Insert a line break in Teams chat
- Open the chat and click or move keyboard focus into the message compose box.
- Type the first line of your message.
- Press Shift+Enter on Windows or web, or Shift+Return on Mac. Microsoft labels this action “Start new line” in its keyboard-shortcut reference.
- Type the next line. Repeat the shortcut to add more line breaks.
- When the draft is ready, select Send.

Microsoft’s send shortcuts are documented for the expanded compose context; use the Send button if you are unsure which shortcut applies to your compose state.
If Shift+Enter does not work
Check focus in the compose box
Make sure the message compose field has keyboard focus before pressing the shortcut. If focus is elsewhere in Teams, the key combination may not enter a line break in your draft.
Check the keyboard-shortcut list
Teams includes an in-app keyboard-shortcut list. Microsoft lists Ctrl+Period (.) on Windows or web to show shortcuts. You can also open the list from Teams settings.

Consider your platform and keyboard layout
Microsoft’s shortcut reference distinguishes Windows/web and Mac key labels. On Mac, the listed key is Return; on Windows and web, it is Enter. Keyboard labels can vary by device and layout.

Does Shift+Enter send my Teams message?
No. Microsoft lists Shift+Enter, or Shift+Return on Mac, as the shortcut to start a new line. Select Send when the draft is ready.
How do I send a Teams message from expanded compose?
Microsoft lists Ctrl+Enter for Windows/web and Command+Return in its Mac shortcut listing for sending from expanded compose. You can also select Send.

What should I do if the shortcut does not work?
Confirm that the compose box has focus and check the keyboard-shortcut list in your Teams client. Microsoft lists Ctrl+Period on Windows/web to show shortcuts.
